Katarina. Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Fix'd. Also, when I listened to the acapella, I thought it sounded more like, "I scratched up my phone". But it mixed with the part where Billie and Mike are singing, "Home" the first time, the second time where they said, "We're Coming Home Again" and the third time it was just unintelligible. He only screams that part two times in Homecoming.
luvgirlcl Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Just butting in to say I love how deep and meta everyone got about Homecoming.
green day is Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Just listened to it again, I guess I got confused from playing the same part over and over and miscounted. Did the people who played Christian and Gloria in the 21 Guns video also play Christian and Gloria in the 21CBD video? At the part where they fixed a car, I mean.

Punx89 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 So I have one question. Can anyone tell me what sassafras roots and emenius sleepus mean?
Hermione Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 So I have one question. Can anyone tell me what sassafras roots and emenius sleepus mean? Sassafras Roots (or the root of the sassafras plant) is an ingredient in root beer. Root beer is something you'd often drink while sitting around wasting time, so that's why they gave the song that title. When Billie was a teenager he wrote a little article for one of his friend's magazines called "How To Be A Couch Potato", and one of the things on the list was root beer - so Billie definitely considers root beer as something to drink while sitting around wasting time haha. I think Emenius Sleepus is some words they made up that are supposed to sound like the Latin for something.........but what that something is I'm not sure.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I think Emenius Sleepus is some words they made up that are supposed to sound like the Latin for something.........but what that something is I'm not sure. "Sleep with the buyer" Same question was asked a couple of pages ago. Emenius would mean buyer (from emere = to buy --> emens = "buying" (as in "laughing, he put the chair down"), but emenius is not a proper conjugation of that), sleepus is nothing, but clearly derived from the English to sleep, with "us" stuck behind it so it sounds Latin and rhymes with emenius. For some reason Google translate translates "sleepus" as sleep, which is mildly annoying because I'm quite sure it's not a Latin word. What "sleep with the buyer" has to do with the song, I have no idea . and as it's a shit conjugation anyway, I'm suspecting it might could also come from ementior = to lie or to feign, to pretend. It's even more impossible emenius comes from that, but at least the meaning is more likely. And maybe they didn't even intend it to mean something (or not something in Latin anyway), and it coincidentally had that outcome when some fan stuck it in google translate.

I don't know if they would've actually looked into the language/meaning of the words as much as that. I'm thinking less technical, maybe it's literally as simple as "emenius" and "sleepus" sound a bit like the words they were going for. Not sure what words though. Emenius always makes me think of "enemy", which it could possibly be since the song is about an old friend who's changed.......maybe the friend almost seems more like an enemy now? "Sleepus" has gotta be sleep hasn't it? But I don't know exactly how that relates to the song. Maybe it's like he hasn't seen his friend for a while and now he's changed.........as though he went to sleep and woke up and found he'd changed into someone more like an enemy. I dunno Of course it could just be a phrase/in joke the band invented between themselves that only they know the meaning of. Especially as the song's written by Mike, I could imagine him coming up with some wacky title that only makes sense with very strange logic around that time

(I'm just desperately looking for *something* that makes me feel like five years of Latin has at least some sort of purpose ). The going to sleep and waking up thing makes sense with the seeing an old friend after some time, but emenius-enemy seems a little bit far-fetched, haha. Or not make any sense at all Someone should ask it to the guys.

I dunno I think it should be something simple as well. Enemy could be it, it doesn't looks like "emenius" at all, but it makes sense. So enemy.. sleepus as in sleep. Maybe they mean it along the lines of "First we got along pretty well, but now that person is changed, and turned into some kind of enemy." Then it could be that he doesn't want to be with that person anymore, just wants to go home and.. sleep? Haha, Idk. It's probably just something VERY random. Yet another question someone should ask the guys for a new interview
Hermione Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Next time we get the chance to submit questions or they do audience questions or something I want this first on the list
Ellenkc Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I figured it was 'sleep is the enemy' in made up latin
Hermione Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I figured it was 'sleep is the enemy' in made up latin Ahh! That sounds very plausible. Not sure exactly how it would relate to the song but that really makes sense. Hmm maybe they made up the phrase and then just decided to use it as the title of the song because they liked it, or for some other random strange reason (like with Platypus).
green day is Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 So I have one question. Can anyone tell me what sassafras roots and emenius sleepus mean? Do you mean the titles or the songs themselves? Sassafras Roots seems like a random title, and it's a love song of sorts, but more saying, "This relationship is going nowhere, it's just a waste of time, but I enjoy it anyway." Emenius Sleepus means "Enemy Sleeps" or "Buyer/Customer Sleeps" depending on the language and it's about meeting someone you used to know to find they've changed for the worst. [Edit:] I hate it when I see the post that was just the last on a page and assume it was the last post posted and then answer a question that's already been answered.
LetItBeHappy Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I got late for the Homecoming discussion. All I wanted to say is that I love when deep conversations start around songs And St. Jimmy is part of Jesus, and he will always be a part of him, even if he doesn't like it. Jesus is screaming "i smashed the phone" to Jimmy in a way of telling him that he doesn't wanna be like that anymore, that he wants to change. That he has grown up, and can't keep with those games. And maybe during Whatsername, Jesus is singing to Jimmy as well, and that's why he appears in the back during the musical. sorry if it doesn't make any sense also... I read that they named the song "Platypus" because Billie always wanted to have a song called Platypus, and that it was better than "I hate you" all alone
green day is Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 What amp settings are used for Know Your Enemy?
bat-chen Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 also... I read that they named the song "Platypus" because Billie always wanted to have a song called Platypus, and that it was better than "I hate you" all alone I agree with Billie Joe. Platypus is much better that just I hate you.
LetItBeHappy Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 ^ there are thousands "I hate you", but there's only one "platypus"
solongfromthestars Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 What does Billie sing at 0:47 in this video? It's irritating me that I can't figure it out
jenni Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 What does Billie sing at 0:47 in this video? It's irritating me that I can't figure it out Is he really singing, at least?! I mean, it sounds like a kind of mumbling to me. It sounds like "She-member, whatever, she jqdhjqh on, so long ago". And by the "she jqdhjqh on" part I think we have to understand it as "oh shit, I've just fucked up the lyrics". But English is not my mother tongue, so if there's a meaning to that, I have no idea what it is!
Laura! Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 What does Billie sing at 0:47 in this video? It's irritating me that I can't figure it out It's just him messing up the lyrics. To me it sounds like he was going to start a wrong line then he continued on with the right line.
