I have a question that has been bugging me for ages haha: Well, you know how the Ernie on the back of Dookie was supposedly airbrushed out? Well I live in Australia and literally every copy of Dookie here has Ernie on the back. So was it just airbrushed out in the USA or something?

recently i realized that my copy has Ernie too, so I was surprized and found that thread. You'll find the answer here!

Right this is going to sound really strange, but for those who have seen Heart Like a Handgrenade, how long is it? Is it about 30 mins long?

I'm sure I've seen it, I downloaded it with the idea of using it in my IT work but I never did. But the title was never Heart Like a Handgrenade or anything, and I deleted it off my comp because it was taking up too much space. I'm really confused :ermm:

Red duct tape!

That's what I always thought it looked like it was made from, and when I dressed up as Fink a couple years ago for Halloween, I just made it from scratch using duct tape :)

It's not really difficult at all, just somewhat time consuming.

Bascially I made a "fabric" out of duct tape as follows: I layed a piece of duct tape horizontally on the floor, sticky side up. Then I took another piece of duct tape and layed it (horizontally and sticky side down) about halfway up the first piece so that half of the sticky side of the first piece was still showing. Then I took another piece and layed it so that it covered the remaining sticky side of the first piece. Then I flipped it over and covered the sticky side that was showing of that piece...and just kept going and going in that fashion. Then when the sheet of "fabric" was done, I found a jacket that fit me well and traced its general size, but made it a little more suit jacket like. I traced a piece for both front and back (luckily duct tape is fairly inexpensive, heh) and then just taped them together, made a few modifications and ta-da! Though, looking back, I should have cut out the arms and taped them separately for better mobility.

I didn't feel like making pants after that, so I instead I made a skirt and wore some fishnets and black boots. For the gloves I bought a pair of fishnet gloves and cut off the fingers. I bought a devil tail from a costume store but didnt end up wearing it. The mask was more difficult and I'm sure there is a better method out there, but I bought some white tights, and used the thigh portion of it. I stretched it out a bit so it was more loose and then drew on some black stripes (I was getting high off the fumes the whole night I wore it :/ ).

The only picture I really have is of the skirt, and it's a bad quality pic, but you can tell that the duct tape is a pretty good effect:

Pardon my ass

MTV took a piece from the movie (that's longer than an hour  ) and made a "Making of: American Idiot record", and it's also called HLAHG :)

I thought it was like 2 hours long? Idk. There's never been a download link to it either, as far as I know. I'd like to know this too, I wish I saw the movie.. or better, I hope it gets released soon!

Pretty sure it's made of PVC.

Examples of PVC:

But warding_off_regrets's suggestion sounds and looks excellent. Looks like duct tape works really well and would be a lot cheaper too.

The questioner is talking about the limited "Making of American Idiot: The Album," I believe.

Yeah, I noticed after I posted that. Another user explained it's most likely about the making of.

Yeah. If HLAHG was leaked, we'd all have it by now.

Exactly! They should just release the DVD, but once again it could be bad timing cause the live record is coming up.. Hmm.

Gah, how could I forget about that material?! I should have said that instead of vinyl. PVC sounds more likely and it's better quality than vinyl.

I don't know for sure, but I have a theory as to why it's always Longview. If you've seen Bullet in a Bible, there's this scene where Mike's talking about how during the AI era, there were a lot people who would go to their shows and they didn't even know the lyrics to their classics, Longview in particular. So maybe they want to see how many people know the lyrics to their old songs now, i.e. who's a "real" fan and who's not.

My theory: it's (relatively) easy for even casual fans who know the song to look real good singing it on stage with them...short, simple verses with very basic vocals, you gotta work awful hard to fail at it -- tho yes, we have indeed seen it fail (Camden!). Bringing folks up for Longview all the time also suggests for future shows what people should expect...and thus what they should practice at home if they really want to try to get up on stage. Hella lotta fun for the fans and the crowd too, and I LOVE the look on Billie's face when the person he picks first hits a homer and he doesn't need to pull up a second or third person. It's like he gets this sigh of relief and he's thinking "fuck yeah, this dude's OK, I'm just gonna kick back and jam on my guitar now, I don't have to worry about him/her."

I always thought he just taped a jacket and pants up with red duct tape (well, the original version I've heard was with electrical tape, which is nearly the same or exactly the same as duct tape).

Same for Captain Underpants' jacket (the guy in yellow. I still mix the non-Green Day members up :ninja:). In this photo you can clearly see the lines from the different pieces of tape. lol bad explanation, sorry.

You can see the same in this picture, as for Fink.

lol if only it was indeed easy to do it well

I agree. You can also see in the whole band shot that Fink has a guitar pick taped to his left arm - if you watch the live DVD you can see this alot better - so it's definately duct tape, because the piece holding the picks there blends right in.

as for the mask - I got my mum to knit me one, but we were also looking at making one out of stretchy t-shirt material or something like a headband (like those long tube ones that people use to hold their dreadlocks back). I reckon Fink's one is an unrolled headband but I can't be sure obviously. Knitting works quite well - here's a photo of mine - but you have to make sure it's not too loose because mine's starting to stretch :(.
