Green Day Question and Answer Thread

K guys, my 10 year old brother wants to put some Green Day songs on a school project he is doing, as they are his favourite band. But he obviously can't use ones with swearing, drugs or sex references. So I'm trying to think of all the songs that could use, as that does narrow it down quite a bit.

So far I have:

  • She's a Rebel
  • Wake Me Up When September Ends
  • Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Starting with AI as that's his favourite album.

Can you guys think of the others? I'm pretty sure 16 and My Generation and Knowledge would be OK.

Sly one that. I don;t even think he likes those songs though. And Like A Rat Does Cheese disturbs me even, no way would I suggest he listen to it.

It depends. Is the school project about Green Day or something else? You can pretty much use every song. Even Last Ride In or Espionage could be nice for background music for the project

From AI you could also use Extraordinary Girl or Letterbomb (edit: ok not that one). Then Warning.. Waiting, Hold On and Castaway just to name a few. Scattered, Who Wrote Holden Caulfield etc.

He's making a web site and wants to list some songs and put videos in. Plus he is really picky with which songs he likes.

Also, BOBD has "fuck" in it. People often forget that since it's so popular and was such a hit on radio, censored.

And Knowledge has "fucking" in it. I think there's more Green Day songs that don't have swearing/inappropriate stuff in them than that do though, there's loads that are ok for kids. Best thing to do is probably just think of some Green Day songs you/your brother like a lot and then give them a listen and take out any that have inappropriate stuff.

After I read your last post in the other thread I remembered hearing something about those songs. I want and searched in the downloads section and found that it's been discussed previously in threads like this, this and this.

It seems like no one knows about those songs, but someone said that Wasteaway probably just turned into Castaway. They are probably both just random tittles that have surfaced though.

Sorry this is kind of old now but, I was perusing YouTube for Green Day videos and came across this one

Edit: Just saw this was on Aska's YouTube channel. That's fucking hilarious.

It's just a fun video from the Warning era. Around the 15:30 mark a list of songs from Warning comes up and I saw Wasteaway and Sleepyhead on there. It also shows Castaway earlier on the list proving that Wasteaway and Castaway are not the same song. They are also surrounded by songs that made it on the final album so it's logical to think that they made it pretty far into the process before being cut. It's not impossible that finished versions of the songs are sitting in Green Day's archives next to Cigarettes and Valentines. Anyway, here's pics to prove it happened.

I feel like the album Warning as a whole is the most kid-friendly.

Also... so Clusterbomb was going to be on Warning? Because that's the early version of Letterbomb... fascinating.

No. Billie didn't come up with the AI story until 2003.

He could have had that song laying around, thought it worked well, was awesome, and re-purposed it

Agreed. And considering we know Clusterbomb was Letterbomb... he probably rewrote it a bit to incorporate all the character stuff.

That logo sort of is the Green Day logo isn't it? I've seen it used a lot of things not 'Warning' related

I always associated it with warning as it was the cover on some versions, but its certainly been used elsewhere. Could well just be general logo.

What about Macy's Day Parade and Hold On? Oh! and Poprocks And Coke too :)

Hmm... I think he's just not taking the bit that has GD songs, but he wants to add Homecoming too. He decides he likes/doesn't like the strangest songs.

Quick glance through Warning lyrics, and yes it probably is the most clean album I have. Of GD. I remember I once got bored enough to count the swearing in AI and there were about 13, just spaced out through the songs. Neverminds, we will sort something out.

Is it me or does Money Bags by Runaway Cab sound a lot like Brain Stew?

I highly doubt it. Billie said he started with WMUWSE in 2002.

Clusterbomb almost on Warning? Interesting find!

Clusterbomb's written there on the list in that video that was filmed in the year 2000 though (and Letterbomb was originally called Clusterbomb so whatever that song was must have some relation to it). WMUWSE may have been the first song he wrote for American Idiot, but that doesn't mean other ideas or parts of songs didn't exist before then. For example Billie's said he came up with most of Horseshoes And Handgrenades around Nimrod time, but he'd still say they started on 21st CB in 2006 because that's when they started on the album. Same with American Idiot, I'm sure many ideas and sounds that went into it existed somewhere in his mind or in unreleased or half-written songs long before he actually started on the album. The Clusterbomb on that list could've been totally different to the Letterbomb we know, he probably thought of this unused song while working on AI and used parts of it/changed it around/changed lyrics etc and ended up making a song for the album out of it.

Damn I've just found out I'm wrong. I remembered a recent conversation on here where people said they'd heard it was written during Nimrod times, but I've just searched and found the conversation and it turned out they were wrong and it was actually during American Idiot times (5:55):

Still shows songs/parts of songs/ideas for songs often exist before work starts on an album though. Any band is gonna have all kinds of little song ideas stored away over the years that they end up using later.

For other sources, the year 2000 video with Clusterbomb on the Warning tracklisting is posted further up this page. And we know Letterbomb used to be called Clusterbomb from seeing photos of early tracklistings of American Idiot (this one is from an AI tour program):
