Green Day Question and Answer Thread

Hey guys! :)

So... I was trying to ignore all the videos on YouTube (about new songs... ok, except Amy&Carpe Diem), so the new album will be a completely surprise for me. Anyway, i saw the new studio video, when Billie's talking about this girl, Amanda. And he's been writing songs to her since 19 years. So, my question is: Is this the girl who was Billie's girlfriend, but then she left to Ecuador? And why is Billlie's still writing songs to her? :D

When i finished the last sentence I figured out that maybe i should post this to some 'New album' topic, but it's actually a question about Green Day's history, so maybe it fits here as well. :)

Thank you for all of your answers! :)

Yeah it is that girl. She was his girlfriend for a year around the time he was writing Dookie, he's said She, Sassafras Roots, Chump, Good Riddance and Whatsername are about her too. As for why he's still writing songs about her, well he writes from his personal experiences. He was with her for a year and has said she was kind of a first love, so obviously that was an important experience in his life. He's not really writing songs "to" her, he's just writing about the things that he's experienced in his life and the thoughts and feelings that go with them.

Thanks, Hermione. :) Now I'm really looking forward for the studio version of the song. :)

How did Mike came up with the name Mike Dirnt?

How did Mike came up with the name Mike Dirnt?

He thought the sound that the bass makes sounded like "dirnt" so he took sound and made it his name.

^ Didn't he walk around at school playing air bass going "dirnt dirnt dirnt" and that's how he got the name?

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's right... like he used to make that sound while in school and his friends gave him the nickname or something.

What are all Billies guitar names? Has he named all his guitars? Is there one called Jiffy Lube?..or was that something else I missed!...Also does Mike have his bass guitars named or Tre? ..if you name drum kits..ha!

Thanks :)

There is Blue, of course! Then he has some vintage 1956 Juniors - named "Blacky," "Whitey," and "Colonel Mustard." A guitar he had many many years ago was named Frankenstein from being put together like Frankenstein. The Blue guitar he played in South America at the end of the 21CB tour was named "Azul."

I don't remember hearing anything about "Jiffy Lube." Anyone?

One of Mike's bass guitars is labeled "Stella," but I don't know if he actually named it that or was just honoring his daughter by putting her name on it.

Dunno if Tre names his drum kits but he has a bunch of assorted individual drums pictured on his FB page that are named. Funny stuff like "Tits McGee," "Mel Gibson," etc.

From an interview Billie Joe did where talks about buying "Floyd"

I bought my 1956 Jr. “Floyd” in 2000, right before we started recording “Warning.” I picked it up at a guitar show in San Rafael and I could tell right away it was special. At the time I was playing mostly Fenders, and this Jr. was a completely different guitar from anything I had played before.

Nah he doesn't have a guitar called Jiffy Lube. Green Day played a show at a venue called Jiffy Lube Live on the 21st CB tour, that's probably where you got that from.

Not technically about Green Day but.... do you reckon it's worth rejoining the Idiot Club now?

Personally I'd say wait until they actually announce that they're doing something you think is worth joining for. If they do anything good they'll post about it on GD.com in advance and we'll hear about it. I'll probably end up joining for presales or some other thing they're doing at some point. But I always think you might as well wait until they're actually doing it, that way you haven't wasted some of your year's membership by joining before they're doing anything.

That's just how I'm gonna do it though, there's no harm in joining now as long as you don't mind renewing it that much earlier the next time.

Is the guitar that Billie is recording the new album with the same one he tweeted about buying?

Thanks guys! Ya its coming back to me now! I remember seeing Stella on Mikes bass on AAF and i wondered was it named after is daughter like you said, I've heard of Frankenstein and Floyd as well sometime, somewhere..

Jiffy Lube was a show he gave a guitar away so that was my confusion!

If my memory serves me right, he tweeted about Harmony, and the ones he's using now are Gretsch guitars

What bassline is Mike playing in Bullet in A Bible when Billie is talking about wanting to shower naked with Tré?

I found this video http://www.youtube.c...mnZrBPEEEo on Youtube that can maybe help you. Unfortunately there isn't any tab in the description, but I found this one http://bass.ben-chaim.com/www.bassmasta.net/g/green_day/171960.html wandering on Google

I don't know if it's correct because I don't play bass, but let me know if it works, ok? :)

Anyway this line doesn't have a name, from what I've understood

Hey,

“After 30 minutes watching TV you believe you're on drugs. They're perfect in trying to turn you into nothing more than mindless consumers. For example there is a melancholic movie on, and right after they send advertising for mood elevators and the people will but it because we are so conditioned to consume!”

does anyone know when and where Billie Joe said this? I read it on the internet and it would be useful for a scientific work I'm doing atm.

Thanks

this has been running through my head for a couple of days, why was Al Sobrante called that way? because I friend of mine told me once a story about it but I can't remember it ¬¬'

He was nicknamed that after a town in the Bay Area called El Sobrante. I've heard a story that he went jogging and got tired and passed out and woke up and saw a sign that said El Sobrante on it and decided to call himself Al Sobrante from that moment, but I'm not sure how true that is . I don't know if El Sobrante was actually his hometown or just near his hometown, but either way I think it's more likely he just called himself that because it's a town in the Bay Area and he's from the Bay Area.

John's nickname is derived from his home town, El Sobrante. He now lives in San Francisco with his wife and son and is no longer in music.
