Vespertine Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I'll never forget when Green Day played the New Orleans Arena on 8/7/09. I had practiced JOS on guitar for about 3 hours, just to make sure I knew it perfectly. When I was on my way to the show, I stopped to make a sign that said "I PLAY JESUS OF SUBURBIA." the sign got confiscated when I tried to go in *sigh*. But when they were about to play JOS, Billie started looking for people to play it. I had told everyone around me I knew it, so they all pushed me to the front baracade so he could see me better. Then, it happened. Billie looked me straight in the eye. "You know how to play it?" - Billie "YES!!!!!!" - Me "Swear to God?" - Billie "SWEAR TO GOD!!!!" - Me "..... Ah, you dont know how to play it. WHO KNOWS HOW TO PLAY IT???" - Billie as he walked to the other side of the crowd. So close. And what sucks even more is that the chic he got to play didnt know the song whatsoever, so he just told her to do a stage dive barely into "City of the Damned". SMH Wow that's fucked up. I would've been pissed.
lastnightonGDA Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 ...it did. what happened? EDIT: Just realized that someone else already asked the. exact. same. thing.
groundpatty Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 what happened? EDIT: Just realized that someone else already asked the. exact. same. thing. I posted it on the 2nd page on this thread... and Mary just quoted it one post before yours
GreenDay41 Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Ugh that would suck so fucking hard!! Sorry to hear that dude. Maybe you`ll get to another time Every time I go I always want to be the one to sing Longview. or anything, for that matter haha. I'd do just about anything to get up on that stage and rock the fuck out with them. XD One cool thing did happen though once.. BeachBum and MalloryMaloney and I all made a sign that says "Its Ho As Hell!" and we held it up during the show and Billie saw it and said "It is ho as hell isnt it!?" Video here: Its at like 0:24 around there.. Haha . The pic of the sign is in my sig too. It was just totally random that he saw it at all so thats why I think its random. He just checks people out throughout the show and calls them in the moment on whatever they're wearing/holding/doing. ^_^ Like, he saw the Canada flag that everybody signed that Jaymee and them were holding up and at that moment he grabbed it and put it on stage and such. Toootally random I think
Jaymee!! Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 All I know is that, even though I wanted to so badly go up on stage (but stage fright has disabled me from ever doing so), every time Billie started looking for participates I would stop screaming and shouting and just stand very still. It did manage to get his attention one time, he did a double take and I smiled and he continued on And of course it's all random. When he asked for my Canada sunglasses in Toronto, I wasn't jumping up and down or waving to get his attention or trying to throw them up at him. They were tucked away safely in the neck of my shirt. I was going back and forth between watching him and Mike, just standing there nothing special, when he suddenly asked for them.
Leisha-LUNA Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I imagine getting passed over completely would suck so much, and groundpatty, I don't mean to discredit how much that would have hurt, but he does the same thing at every show. He makes a big deal saying "she knows it, he knows it.. etc". it builds the suspense and the hysteria. The more people he rejects the more it makes everyone else feel like they might get picked, and then get more excited. But again, that's coming from someone that got picked the first show of the Aussie tour and never had to experience the rejection - I want everyone to get to experience the feeling of being on stage, its amazing! I got picked by Mike
Annie, get your gun Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I have no idea how he chooses people. But I think that in the concert of Argentina, -with the exception of maybe, 2 people - I don't know... it was all SETTLED. It was a little suspect, especially those 2 girls. Some people may think, "oh but if Billie would have chosen you, you wouldn't think the same", but after a few seconds when they came on stage, that would NEVER happen anyway; but that's other story.

Annie, get your gun Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 what did he do that made you think it was settled? He didn't do anything 'suspect'. I mean, those 2 girls that jumped on stage... One of them was more interested on screaming that she was on stage -and not her friends- then she took advantage to kiss Billie, of course. The other one seemed to barely know the lyrics of Longview and then she got the guitar. That's not enough to explain why I think this... I just do. however, it's a feeling I have i know i can be wrong...
Isabel Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 If anything was ever going to happen by fate, it had to be when he picked Darren for Longview in Marlay Park. He had already picked Gráinne for the first verse and she was standing about two people away from Darren, so it would have been a long shot for him to pick someone so close to his first participant. He even said "Ok someobody from the other side!" and walked away from our group...but for some reason, he just came back again and locked eyes with our Darren amazing!!! I nearly cried, I was so happy for him.

That would actually be thanks to Becki and I literally SCREAMING at him, both of us half-hanging over the barrier and flailing and pointly wildly back at Darren. He looked right at us and we were screaming TURN AROUND! DARREN! DARREN! and we were jabbing our hands at him, and he smiled and turned around and looked straight at him, and that's when he chose.
Allen Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 What happens to the fans who got a guitar from Billie ? They go to the back stage? or what ? Maybe one of you guys got a guitar from Billie ? Yes ? So tell my what it was. Please Very sorry for my Terrible English...

I nearly cried, I was so happy for him. I literally could not believe it, it just happened so fucking fast and sudden. I couldn't believe he turned back around again, but it does help having people on the opposite side of the catwalk pointing over my direction, and people around me pointing at me And as much as I had feared beforehand that he would move on to someone else, something just told me that I was going to be on that stage once he looked at me. It's so weird, because from reading a few posts in this thread about how he was acting like he was gonna pick someone and then not picking them, I just kinda knew in my gut I was gonna be picked. I still can't get over it, most of the time when I think about it, I have to try and convince myself that it wasn't a dream and that it did actually happen That would actually be thanks to Becki and I literally SCREAMING at him, both of us half-hanging over the barrier and flailing and pointly wildly back at Darren. Seriously, thank you guys so much for doing that, and same goes to Trina and Lara and whoever else pointed at me You guys are awesomes
darenmay Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 i'd observed some, people wearing green day shirts at the very front. it's a plus if you're being pointed by your friends.
mandajane Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I've realized that a lot of people he chooses have that 'punk look' if you will. Yknow, Mohawks, colored hair etc. That may just be a coincidence though... LAWLZZ
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 i'd observed some, people wearing green day shirts at the very front. That's kind of obvious that people "like that" get picked. There's a LOT of people at Green Day concerts wearing Green Day shirts, so well, yeah, and if you're not in the front, you're not in Billie's line of vision so you won't get picked.
Allen Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 If You can answer for my question i'll be grateful. I'ts very important to me...
basketcase69 Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 It's not always about people and their crazy hairstyles and such. I got picked to go on stage and at the time I just had my normal brown hair and I wasn't doing anything at all to stand out. I was just singing along and stuff. he obvi thought i was hot though hahah joking. but yeah i'm not sure how he really picks.
Jaymee!! Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 What happens to the fans who got a guitar from Billie ? They go to the back stage? or what ? Maybe one of you guys got a guitar from Billie ? Yes ? So tell my what it was. Please Very sorry for my Terrible English... Well I don't know anyone on here who's gotten a guitar, but in Toronto my friends and I got backstage passes for after the show, which was only good for one section of the backstage area. I saw the kid who had gotten pulled up (and also got the guitar) and he was allowed in the VIP tent...where all the free alcohol and BIG NAME friends of the band were. I don't know if he was a special case, but I remember reading that Melissa (the first person on the tour to get a guitar, from Paris) also got backstage passes and met the whole band after the show. To me, it sounds like they automatically get a VIP pass instead of a regular backstage pass.
The Guy Called Kill Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 I reckon he patrols the crowd whilst the support acts are on in a Spiderman outfit and picks people out.
Metanoia Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 That's kind of obvious. There's a LOT of people at Green Day concerts wearing Green Day shirts, so well, yeah, and if you're not in the front, you're not in Billie's line of vision so you won't get picked. I usually dont wear Green Day shirts JUST to be "different" and stand out a bit ;D

I still think it was more than that. If you actually watch the video you can see him turn back towards the catwalk after he's looked on Jason's side and says "I need someone with passion! Who's got passion?!" and then turns to our side a few seconds later and says "You know how to do it?" to Darren. it was just so unbelievable!

Jaymee!! Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 How about festival ? What do you mean? A VIP pass is a VIP pass, it doesn't change from concert to festival... I don't think it was more than that, I think it was the fact that your whole side of the barrier was gesturing towards Darren. When 10+ people are all flailing towards one specific area, that's going to get his attention.
