Love this song, hope it's on the live album

I can't believe this isn't a single yet! It's just too epic for words, I loved it ever since I first heard it, the introductory drum beats get me all excited. I also think the transition at the end of the song into 21 Guns is beautiful

Coca Cola Execution

and

this is how the west was won

are my favourite words in this song

"The Static Age" is definitely one of my favorite songs off 21st Century Breakdown. But it didn't become a favorite until I saw Green Day live in Chicago at the United Center on July 13, 2009. Their performance of "The Static Age" ended up being one of the biggest highlights from the show. It's WAY better live, than in the studio. Jason's saxophone solo blows Billie's "guitar riffing" from the album out of the water. I was so disappointed it wasn't released as a single, I sure as hell hope they put a version of it on Awesome As F**k. If they don't I'll be slightly disappointed. I should mention that the static-eyes gas mask backdrop that they used during the live performances of this song is my favorite art/graphic from the 21st Century Breakdown tour.

when the album first came out i didn't really 'notice' this song but when I saw it live it was amazing and now it is definitly in my top 3 fave GD songs.

This song has got to be one the best songs on 21st Century Breakdown by far. I, like many of you, didn't especially care for song at first but have grown to love it. This song strikes you at first as just another song; three chords, somewhat catchy (yet repetitive) melody and chorus. It's kind of like a snake. Snakes hide in the brush and shadows of the forest. they sneaky and quiet and strike their pray and kill them before they knew it. The Static age is exactly the same! It hides behind the obviously eye-attracting songs (21st Century Breakdown, Know Your Enemy, Horseshoes and Handgrenades, 21 Guns, etc.) and poses as a regular track that will probably skipped in order to hear 21 Guns. But as soon as you turn your back, it grabs you and takes you under. It fills all your thoughts; its complex, incredible lyrics flow through your blood like venom. Before you can utter "Do you know what's worth fighting for.." your swept into a comatose full of creepy gas masks with static for eyes, and images of Jason Freese tearing up the stage with his saxophone. Normally I would be worried that my mind was over ruled by a song, but I kind of liked it, didn't you? There is no other song out there like this one. It's simply, yet so full! If i could hear one song played live by Green Day before I died, this would be the one. I know... it sounds cliche, but sometimes being cliche is okay. The best lines in song would have to be,

"All I want to know Is a god-damned thing not what's in the medicine, all I want to do is I want to breathe, batteries are not included! What's the latest way that a man can die, screaming Hallelujah? Singing out, "the dawns early light" Silence of the lost and forgotten ohhh Screaming at you!!!!"

These lines pack such a concentrated burst of emotion and feeling, that it paralyzes you... so to speak ;)

Great song. At first I didn't like it too much, it was just another okay song, but it grew on me. It's not my favourite from 21st Century Breakdown, but it's still a very, very good song. Really catchy, too, but what really stands out about it are the lyrics. They're absolutely amazing. The whole album 21stCB is just lyrically beautiful, and this song is no exception. They hit really hard, you know, like how our society is so controlled by television and the media and everything.

Like other people said above, this song just makes you want to get off your computer and enjoy life and the people you love as they are, without computers and facebook and texting and all that.

My favourite lyrics are:

All I wanna know is a god-damned thing, not what's in the medicine

All I want to do is I want to breathe, batteries are not included

What's the latest way that a man can die, screaming hallelujah?

Tragic a la madness and concrete,

Coca Cola execution.

Conscious on a cross and your heart's in a vise,

Squeezing out your state of mind.

Are what you own that you cannot buy

What a fucking tragedy, strategy

When I got the chance to hear the whole album, this song was definitely among my favorites, and I was really looking forward to hearing it live. So many people have been quoting the lyrics, so I'll just say it's always amazing to me how huge their talent for songwriting is. When I first heard it live, the emotion of this song overwhelmed me. There is such a desperation and feeling of angry hopelessness on this song that makes me feel like it's the "dust yourself off" and going-down-fighting feeling one would get after hearing such songs as Murder City and 21 Guns.... this is like the realization of what's wrong and saying that I won't become one of the unheard drones. Awesome choice for song of the week!

I love this song. One of my favorites off of 21CB. It's also one of the Green Day songs that I find to be very relaxing. :)

And I love the transition into 21 Guns as well.

It's my favorite song on the 21stCB!!!!!!!! *after EastJesusNowhere* It gives me a kind of electric impulse! There's so much energy in it!

Coca-cola execution

and

All I wanna do is I want to breath

Batteries are not included

ARE GENIUS!!!!!

The most emotional music moment for me is:

Hey, hey it's the static age

This is how the west was won

Hey, hey it's the static age millennium

Dream of singing it with BJ :hug:

It took me quite a while to start liking the Static Age.. But then all of a sudden BOM! I started liking it really much... And as many of you know I suppose, it's amazing live! So after seeing live in June, I fell deeply in love with this song, it is one of my favourite song right now..

The lyrics are just amazing, and it's something with the melody, it's so catchy... and the key change, I adore it!!

My favourite part:

All I want to know

Is a God-damned thing

Not what's in the medicine

All I want to do is

I want to breathe

Batteries are not included

everytime I hear this part I get goosebumps..

I love this song! The Coca Cola execution part is funny, I think. The first time I listened to it...I was like: Did he really say Coca Cola ? It made me wonder a couple of minutes, before to check in the lyrics. ;)

But I heard it live and it was amazing! The speech part (y'know, when Billie speaks before a song...) is also great...

Here is my favorite part: Can you hear the sound of the static noise? / Blasting out in stereo / Cater to the class and the paranoid / Music to my nervous system / Advertising love and religion / Murder on the airwaves /

Slogans on the brink of corruption / Vision of blasphemy, war and peace / Screaming at you

I was so into this song live I almost through my phone on the floor hoping to break it haha

I was going to post about how this is not my favorite song from 21CB, but then I watched the video.

It is a really powerful song. I go through periods when I love it and times when I skip it. I guess we're on-again this week.

My favourite part:

All I want to know

Is a God-damned thing

Not what's in the medicine

That's my favorite as well.

For me, it's the second best song off of 21st CB. I was watching the Dr. Oz show and in this one episode he was talking about risks factors for pancreatic cancer- one of them was soda drinkers :o Probably not relevant to this song but I thought of the line "coca cola execution."

this song is really epic live. (i did youtube only, btw). especially on the last parts when it goes on repetition, it's like it's building and building, the energy is overflowing until it ends.

Best song from 21st Century Breakdown along with 21st Century Breakdown. :)

I've never particularly loved static age. I like it, but theres never been that spark between me and that song, i don't know why though xD

I totally love this song.

It always reminds me of the last Green Day concert I've been to.

Personally, Static Age is one of my favorite songs from 21st Century Breakdown, 'coz it shows what a brilliant song writer Billie Joe is.

I love the way he plays with double meanings, or oxymorons, things that aren't supposed to go together.

such as " are what you own that you cannot buy" ...

Billie Joe once said about the song "Static Age"

I love old punk flyers. You'd see things like a crucifixtion of Mickey Mouse: two things that aren't supposed to go together, that's kind of what the song is about.

my favorite lines are

...all I want to do is I want to breath

batteries are not included"

What's the latest way that a man can die

screaming Hallelujah...

and again to quote Billie: :P

that's what he said in Blunt Magazine

I think the static is like a theme throughout the whole record where it's like you're being,..., bombarded with the noise you already have in your head, and then having like three different televisions on at the same time or something. And I think what you're really trying to do is find a deeper truth or deeper meaning or something. That song is trying to make sense of the static and trying to declare like what you think is bullshit and what's real, you know.

^ I just noticed, I quoted a "you know".

Great song with great message, I'm glad I got to hear it live.

And as everyone else - All I want to do is I want to breathe, batteries are not included is one of the best lines. <3

After a bad day at work, this is the first song I put on in my car. It always cheers me up - maybe not the words - but certainly the upbeat music. You know, "it has a great beat and is easy to dance to." (The older members here should know what this quote is from!) :P

One of my favorites off 21CB. I love the key changes and the sax solo in that video is simply amazing :)

Favorite line: "Music to my nervous system". I don't know why, but it sounds cool. haha
