Which Green Day Song to Use?

Avoid American Idiot or Holiday, because I'm guessing your up and coming band don't intend on making political statements. When I Come Around is a good bet, also Nice Guys Finish Last or Longview would work well as opening songs. Plus American Idiot is a song that I don't think any band could pull off it would just seem not right. Especially for relatively new bands to cover it just would not work at all. I'm trying to put my finger on why right now, but I can't exactly

Americian idiot is upbeat and very well known, you should play that.

American Idiot would be the best to kick off your gig. It would build up an excitement in the audience, which would make 'em do jumpin' jacks.

Nice Guys Finish Last is a good crowd pleaser. I have opened a few gigs before myself, it really depends on where in your set the song will be (start, middle, end).

Avoid the softer stuff like Wake Me Up, 21 Guns, Good Riddance etc. Avoid the long songs (JOS, Homecoming) as people don't want to be listening to 10 minute long song in a Club/Pub situation. Another song to avoid is American Idiot, you will be crucified trust me.

If this song is the opener, I would suggest Nice Guys Finish Last. However it is in the middle of your set my suggestions would be Burnout, Letterbomb, Stuck With Me or Holiday, any of those would work and I have seen them work.

Jaded or Minority.....

Personally as far as covers go, I feel that American Idiot is overdone... However, I recommend Holiday, as it's easy to sing along to and easy to get the crowd involved. (Can I get another amen? AMEN!)

Basket Case is a good one too... For the sole purpose that it's older but still really well known, and upbeat and fun to play.

Basket Case, When I Come Around, Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?..... Those are some songs I would do. That tl;dr helped.

I would say Longview or Nice Guys Finish Last.

Everyone I know (even if they aren't big Green Day fans) loves those songs.

Longview because it's funny and everyone knows it.

Nice Guys Finish Last because it's incredibly fun and upbeat. Even if they don't know the song it's a great way to get them pumped up.

Yeah, it'd actually be nice to not do something that's really mainstream. I remember when I was in a band in December, it seemed like everyone was doing Green Day covers, a lot of them did American Idiot, Basket Case, Holiday, and also don't close your show with Good Riddance. F'real, All by Myself is where it's at. I like Nice Guys Finish Last as an opener, that's pretty cool, and Letterbomb is a solid suggestion. If people know that your band is going to be something like Green Day, then they'll probably catch on no matter what you play, which is nice. Out there in the world, Green Day is kind of a love hate affair...if you're going to do a well known song ya gotta nail it, boom. If you do something a little less well known but still awesome enough to where some people know it and the rest WANT to know it, that should work out pretty well for everyone. So yeah, I like Burnout, Letterbomb, and Nice Guys Finish Last suggestions. Just don't kick your water bottle if you do that last one. Or do...
