Harry Potter. Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 "The day after the election, Mr. Armstrong wrote a new song called “Wonderful,” Mr. Vig said. “It was super poppy, sunny, Beach Boys but with fuzzy pop chords,” he said. “It was great. Hundreds of bands would kill to have this song on the record.” Mr. Armstrong, he said, vetoed it, deciding it wouldn’t fit with the rest of the album. “He said, ‘I just had to write it,’ ” Mr. Vig recalled. " Here's the article where the quote is from http://www.nytimes.c...gewanted=3&_r=3 Thanks! Any live/studio version for it? Has it ever been shown? No, I don't think it was.
wubbzy Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 It's funny that they mention in a video that it's the first time they've ever sung about fucking and the press interprets it as them making a whole album about sex... http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1680231/green-day-ninth-studio-album-sex.jhtml
alaniluau Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I have a feeling there's a chance it may end up as a B-side. Regardless I would love to hear it. Judging from how Butch Vig described it it's supposed to be a really cool song. I doubt it will make it onto the new record. If the band had really felt good about it, they would have found some way to sneak it on 21CB, even as a B-side. But they don't like to live in the past, so I think our chances of hearing this song are shot. Plus, their feelings toward Obama (which I assume the song discusses) have changed since the election.
pretty_and_demented Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 I really hope they put their Misfits cover of Hybrid Moments.

Yes, I think so, too. I really hope they put their Misfits cover of Hybrid Moments. I'm not so interested in them doing covers, because their own stuff is even better in my opinion.
GuitarPunk94 Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 the announcement, that green day will play on summer sonic festival in japan this august leaves some questions for me...do you think their new album will be released before this festival or do you think they release the album after the festival (and will use this festival to present some new songs to a bigger audience to test them live..or could they just play their old stuff?!)

No one really knows. I think it'd be awesome if the new album was ready around this time, but not surprised if it isn't out yet. I think what Matt said in the latest podcast sounds about right - maybe they'll have a single out at that time and can play that or a couple songs getting people ready for the release. Similar to what we saw with American Idiot at Reading Festival in 2004.
jamesobxfan2296 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Hmmm, it's been three weeks since they started recording. I wonder if they'll wrapping up recording soon and move on to mixing and mastering.
kellykat101 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Im soooo xcited!!! i cant wait! i think it will probably come out either in the fall or beginning of 2013!

MrsBillieJoe95 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 It's def. going to be out this year billie said himself that they wouldn't have as big a gap between 21cb and the new album like they did with AI and 21CB (I shall find the article if someone else doesn't find it before me) and that was a 5 year gap. It's going on 3 years May 15th, so they can't truly wait too much longer if they want to keep Billie's word on that! I think it would be amazing if they released something with just Mike and Tre singing lead vocals and Billie on backing just as a one time thing though to make it special Everyone always says that Mike and Tre should have more tracks, so why not a whole album? I'm sure they're willing to experiment with different ideas once!
Mary711 Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 I couldn't handle something where the focus isn't on Billie's voice. For me the feelings, the atmosphere and nearly everything else is all about his voice. That's one of the most important things why their music is so special to me.
solongfromthestars Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 It'd be great to hear more of Mike and Tre but I don't think Billie's voice is really suited to backing, he's definitely a frontman. He'd probably drown them out! More little parts like Rock n' Roll Girlfriend and Modern World would be cool though

There's a reason why he's the singer. I wouldn't mind a b-side with Mike or Tre singing, though.

Well, just because a band releases a song that they wrote in the past doesn't mean they're living in the past, so I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. If I remember correctly Billie wrote When It's Time when he was 19, and that wasn't released until 2010. I'm also positive that there are other examples of songs Billie wrote for a specific album, but ended up being put on an entirely different record years later, I'm just drawing a blank right now. However I do agree with you on the Obama thing. I totally forgot about that. That definitely may make it less likely to happen.

You are right, Good riddance was written during the time they were working on Dookie, I'm pretty sure Horseshoes and handgrenades was written around the time of Nimrod. I think there are even more examples of them holding back songs for a different album. Cigarettes & Valentines was written before American Idiot and wasn't released till last year on Awesome as Fuck but that has a whole other story to it too.

I know they've said H&H was one of the first songs they wrote for 21st CB but I don't think it's that old, I'm almost certain I remember them saying it was either 2006 or 2003 (but I'm thick so I can't remember which it was). I can't believe it was written before that Hives song that it sounds so similar to , they must've heard it before they wrote it. I agree though, I don't think the fact that Wonderful was written a while ago rules it out at all. The fact it was written when Obama was elected doesn't necessarily rule it out either, if the song was just inspired by how he felt rather than actually being specifically about the topic then it probably doesn't matter whether his feelings on the topic have changed.
swarheely Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 i don't know how plausible it is, i suppose it depends how quick they record the record, but i would love for a summer release. the energy from these videos they've been posting just give me a feel that it'll be an awesome summer record... so maybe july or august, one can only hope haha

Yeah, that's true. Billie's writing has always been really creative and not terribly blunt or obvious (minus a few songs from the early days haha), so I'm sure there aren't any lines like "Obama is America's new President, fuck yeah!" lol. Also If something really positive happens in America or in Billie's life I'm sure he could make the song take on a whole new meaning to him too. Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Good Riddance. I'm pretty sure Haushinka was written while they were working on Dookie too.
Muttweed182 Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 I actually remember reading somewhere that the basics of what became Horshoes and Handgrenades was written during the Nimrod era. It'd be awesome if someone could find the article. It was right before 21stCB came out.

Unfortunately I spent a while looking for any articles that mentioned when it was written last night and failed miserably, but if two different people remember it that pretty much confirms it. Weird to think of it (or some part of it) existing that long ago.
