Kayfabe Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Just think of the different 'types' of song that Green Day have and then pick a few from there. You know, Green Day usually have The 3 Chord old school (Welcome to Paradise/2000 Light years away sort of songs) The ballads (Good Riddance, Macy's Day Parade, 21 Guns type songs) The 'different' ones (Misery, Peacemaker, Blood Sex and Booze type songs The rocky new school (Give Me Novocaine, 21st Century Breakdown...)
AnnA™ Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Oh, I did this with my dad maybe 2-3 years ago. I just picked one favourite off of each album as I wanted to kind of show him how much they've done and evolved over the years (he used to think they were kids or something who'd just gotten famous over night). And a lot of people just think of American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown when someone mentions Green Day, so I always want to show how much more there is to them. Because he's not really into that kind of music I decided to go with mostly the simpler, and sweet songs and the classics of course. Otherwise I'd say International Superhits is probably a good choice. My dad didn't become a fan or anything, but he no longer had these lame prejudices. I've introduced several songs to mum, like 21 Guns, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and so on. She likes those, and I think she's got a thing for Billie... So she's not a "real" fan, but it was enough to convince her to go to one of their shows this summer.
Ilda_25 Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 agreed, that was my first album International Superhits was my first album too. Althoug I think you should not use only its songs, you must include some from 1039Smoothed out slappy hours, Kerplunk, AI, and, of course, 21stCB...
Laurenn Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 i remember doing this for my friend. here is what i gave her: 1. J.O.S (takes up alot of space on a cd) 2. Homecoming (also takes up alot of space on a cd) 3. She 4. East Jesus Nowhere 5. The Grouch 6. Brainstew 7. BOBD 8. F.O.D 9. King for a Day 10. Burnout 11. In the End 12. 86 13. Green Day 14. Who Wrote Holden Caufield 15. Warning agreed, that was my first album same here! and when i got it i was mad since there was no American Idiot on it, so then i bought Bullet in a Bible and was mad cause it was live. So then i just decided to buy all the albums...
Spider Tre Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 1. Basket Case 2. Why Do You Want Him? 3. Bab's Uvula Who? 4. Poprocks & Coke 5. Warning 6. Give Me Novacaine 7. Only Of You 8. Isabel Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I usually try and recommend a particular album to a person, to ease them into the band. Having a whole array of songs that all sound completely different might confuse them, so I think it's best to stick with one album for a more steady introduction. I wouldn't start them off with something as political as American Idiot or even 21st Century Breakdown, then there's nearly an expectation to learn something from it and I can find those albums to be very intense at times. Personally, I would recommend Dookie. For me that album represents Green Day the best and it's what really got me into them. Either that, or Insomiac.
Punk-tastic32 Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 A "best of Green Day" CD in just 20 songs? Impossible! But I'll give it a shot. 1) Holiday 2) Letterbomb 3) Welcome to Paradise 4) When I Come Around 5) Walking Contradiction 6) Christie Road 7) Lights Out 8) Suffocate 9) Castaway 10) Hold on 11) Minority 12) Paper Lanterns 13) 16 14) East Jesus Nowhere 15) Peace Maker 16) Blvd. of Broken Dreams 17)Nice Guys Finish Last 18)Redundant 19)King For a Day 20) St. Jimmy Wow, I did it. I'm really happy with myself now. Anyways, Include at least one from each album, some popular ones, and some lesser-known or even b-sides. I don't really think the order is all too important as long as it doesn't awkwardly change all the time. (AI seems to give this problem sometimes) It's also good to know what type of musical taste the people that are getting this have.. showing them things similar to what they already like can help convert them into Green Day fans
November's Storms Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I usually try and recommend a particular album to a person, to ease them into the band. Having a whole array of songs that all sound completely different might confuse them, so I think it's best to stick with one album for a more steady introduction. She does indeed, I can vouch for that ha Personally I'd go with Nimrod, there's such a broad range on that. But if you're going with individual songs there's obviously plenty of great ones to choose from, and some people above are recommending some definites. But I would definitely put Panic Song on the list. The 2 minute intro is just fantastic, and really shows off the skill Mike and Tré in particular have at playing their instruments
in_your_face Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 well, my opinion is to include the songs BOBD, Holiday and 21 Guns in it 'cause they'll surely love how these songs
Billie's__Babe Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 i would go with using like the more 'should've been singles' songs or just ones that show off their talent definately wouldn't leave out Scattered or Worry Rock
taybay Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 1. 21st Century Breakdown 2. One of my Lies 3. Longview 4. Basketcase 5. Whatsername 6. She 7. Brain Stew 8. See the Light 9. Redundant 10. Having a Blast 11. Give Me Novacaine 12. Walking Contradiction 13. Christie Road 14. No One Knows 15. 80 16. Worry Rock 17. Walking Alone 18. Minority 19. Waiting 20. Macy's Day Parade This is what I did for my friends haha, well at least the ones that didn't like Green Day. I can safely say I've convinced every one of my friends to like them
Laura! Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Give them a few songs from each album then send them to Youtube to watch videos from shows, so they can see how awesome of a live band they are.
Sarabeth Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 A while ago, I tried to get my friend to quit hating Green Day. I dont know why she hated them because she didnt know any of their songs. But I tried to make her a CD with my favorite Green Day songs on it. Turns out tha I have about 160 favorite Green Day songs... ha ha. I have the same problem. Just introduce them to all of the songs.
green day is Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Put a non-GD song in the middle just to fuck with them. A well-known one, like Stairway to Heaven or something.
solongfromthestars Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I guess it kind of depends what kind of people they are and might differ for each one. But I think like some other people have said, give them like two songs from each album, maybe three so they can really get an idea of how different every album and even every song is. Giving them just one album at a time is a good idea too, though. If I was going to try to introduce my friends to GD by the three songs from every album thing, I'd pick: 1. Viva La Gloria! 2. Going to Pasalaqua 3. Nice Guys Finish Last 4. Waiting 5. 2000 Light Years Away 6. Holiday 7. Hitchin' a Ride 8. Peacemaker 9. One for the Razorbacks 10. The Judge's Daughter 11. Letterbomb 12. I Was There 13. Longview 14. Words I Might Have Ate 15. American Eulogy 16. When I Come Around 17. Whatsername 18. Macy's Day Parade 19. Burnout 20. Good Riddance See how it goes by trying that with one person, then if it doesn't go well try giving somebody else one album at a time.
fadi_7 Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 looking through my Green Day collection... i would put - Holiday - Jesus of Suburbia - Basket Case - Welcome to Paradise - Sassafras Roots - Walking Contradiction - Brain Stew - Hitchin' a ride - Scattered - Worry Rock - Church on Sunday - Blood, Sex and Booze - Warning - Deadbeat Holiday - When it's Time - The Static Age - ¡Viva la Gloria! - 2000 light years away - Minority - St. jimmy that was really hard phew. i would have choose the same songs like you those are the greatest

Miikey Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 You should definitely put some of the more popular songs on, but also some of the less known songs from Smooth and Kerplunk and stuff like that. 1. Holiday. 2. Don't Leave Me. 3. Longview. 4. Brain Stew. 5. One For the Razorbacks. 6. Dry Ice. 7. American Idiot. 8. Welcome To Paradise. 9. Know Your Enemy. 10. Peacemaker. 11. Basket Case. 12. Nice Guys Finish Last. 13. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? 14. 21st Century Breakdown. 15. Minority. 16. Poprocks & Coke. 17. 2000 Light Years Away. 18. Jesus of Suburbia. 19. Walking Contradiction. 20. Ha Ha You're Dead.
DecanoLP Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 The first 6 tracks are in order, but the rest is a bit mixed up 1. Homecoming 2. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? 3. Jesus Of Suburbia 4. green day is Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 You should tally up the number of times each song has been suggested and pick the biggest 20.
Clayish Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 I love these, do this all the time making top 10 playlists for my favourite bands, it fits in with my iTunes OCD I suppose. I would go 10 songs, none of the more famous ones. You don't want to give them International Superhits! as I would say 99% of people who don't like Green Day will only have heard the singles, mainly from post American Idiot. 1. Going To Pasalacqua 2. Letterbomb 3. She 4. Stuck With Me 5. Nice Guys Finish Last 6. 86 7. Waiting 8. Having A Blast 9. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? 10. Whatsername Quite representative of their style I think. That list is perfect.
RockinRyan13 Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 i would just hand them dookie and tell them, good day.
November's Storms Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Yeah I think go through all the lists and see what songs pop up most frequently and use them. Then include Panic Song
