J'net
When J.D. Salinger wrote him, I'm sure he had in mind every young boy or girl who's just not fit for society the way is it now. And we've all met them, persons who just can't function in the "phony", hypocritical standards that are just common to everyone else. Not only have we all met them, I think most of us have some Holden inside. And the thing I love about Holden is that, despite all his loneliness and his desire to be accepted and loved, he simply refuses to pretend to be something he's not. CzechIdiot
I adore this song. When I first read the book "Catcher In The Rye" I didnt know Green Day have a song about it. It was a great finding ;D. The song is great (how else). I think, the song sometimes describes me (even I am a girl xD). Favorite lyrics There's a boy who fogs his world and now he's getting lazy There's no motivation and frustration makes him crazy
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love
Great song, both musically and lyrically. Amazing. Great character description, but the lyrics are great as well as standalone instead of related to the book. And musically it's a damn nice song as well. My brain is absolutely fried right now. The posts in this thread are quite wonderful. Just going to agree with them. I need to reread the book. I read it two years ago, but my English wasn't very good back then and I liked the book, but nothing more than that and I didn't quite understand it at the time, "oh, that was a nice book, I enjoyed reading it. What was the story?" A little later down the line I understood it better from what I remembered, but I would probably appreciate and understand it more now if I read it again. iloveyouisntenough
I love this song. It is probably my favorite song off of Kerplunk. Not only are the words fitting, but so are the instruments and just everything about it. It is really an awesome song. I also read Catcher In The Rye awhile ago, and do think it describes Holden perfectly. I wonder if I fully understood the book, and wonder if I could do better now. So I may re-read it..... Nele
Random storytime: At the Mainz show when Billie Joe was ready to play the acoustic encore and my friend Brian and I tried to request Who wrote Holden Caulfield. We screamed the song title like 10 times but Billie just continued playing random chords so I screamed:"Just play anything!" Well he just laughed and ended up playing Pulling Teeth. I hope next tour I'll be able to hear this song live.

Tubbie Head
This is a perfect timing for this song to be the song of the week, since I just finished reading The Catcher in the Rye today! hahah. It was the first time I read it... After finishing it I turned on my ipod and listened to the song. And all I can say is, I didn't like the book that much, but it was sort of interesting, to look at stuff in Holden's point of view. I like the song, but obviously I didn't know what it was exactly about, now I know, and understand it. Reading the book also made me think how Holden Caulfield is actually pretty similar to the young Billie Joe...not that I knew Billie or anything, but from the songs he wrote and how he described his life. This song is great, I love it, like I love Kerplunk as a whole, but it's not my favourite song from it. I love how GD play it live now a days so often =D That's "Catcher" in a nutshell right there....story opens and we find Holden talking to us from a mental hospital. That's right, he's crazy, but I didn't understand he was at a mental hospital.. And I have just read it! =

Prisca
I fucking adore this song. Seriously, definitely in my top 5 fav. songs. J'net the second video you posted, I was there that evening and I couldn't believe when I heard them begin playing it. I was in complete bliss the entire song. I wish I would've been there to see Davey & Billie sing it but the video does justice for me (better than nothing!) but I can only imagine how much better it was live. I really hope something like that happens in the near future. Davey is adorable. Seriously, as the avid reader I am, it makes me so happy that Billie wrote about a fictional character that he connected with. I love the song, he captures Holden so perfectly. I actually read Catcher in the Rye when I was in my preteens, I think. I had to read it again in my english class last year and I remember telling my teacher about this song. He was surprised to hear that a rock band would write about Holden. I quickly looked up the lyrics online so he'd read them; I was so excited that my teacher was genuinely interested in hearing what I was saying. Anyways, he liked them enough that he said he'd try to incorporate them into his lesson plan next year and that he'd look the song up on Youtube. I was so happy afterwards. Lauralovesgreenday
ahh, I love this song. i really do. It sounds amazing, despite the lack of money spent on recording but i kinda like the roughness of kerplunk. I just finished reading The Catcher in the Rye which i though was a pretty good book. i didnt really like the storyline but i liked how holden talked about his opinions. it was pretty funny Listening back to the song after made me enjoy the song a lot more so i'd suggest reading it if you havent already. Billie describes holden pretty well in the song i think but it feels a bit cliche'd at times... still, its an awesome song ♥
