jos_whatsername Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 how can they say green day is overrated and compare them with justin bieber, miley cyrus etc ?! seriously, there are plenty of people who dont even know green day. and these commercial acts like justin bieber are SO overrated. i wouldnt even call it "overrated", though. they're just popular and loved by many many teenage girls. but so what, they like miley cyrus and we like green day. i agree that green day's music itself is underrated. because all these kids that only know songs like know your enemy dont get the genius-ness (omg thats not a word is it) of the lyrics . and many people are just like "oh these guys pretend to be punks, i dont like them" and dont listen closely enough. so.. yeah. i dont really know what this post was all about but this was what i liked to say i guess .
Silverlight Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 I don't think people should be calling Green Day 'overrated' with the amount of air time their clips have on the television. And I am fine with people sharing their opinion on the band, but it really boils my blood when people who don't know the bands music slag 'em. Hard. AND, with they 'they're not punk anymore debate', I think it would be fair to say that is they were all like 'Oh yeah, we're Green Day, the hardest punk-rockers on Earth! No ones more punk then Green Day', then they could be called overrated. But they aren't like that. And how on Earth could they be compared to the Beeb and Miley Cyrus?
Holly Ann Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 Meh. The Beatles are my second favourite band and I'm constantly told that they're overrated too. I guess it just depends on what you like. Everyone has a different definition of "good" music, but there is no such thing as "good" music, there's just the music you like and the music you dont like. This forever. How can they even be in the same list as Bieber?

jensername Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 What a joke to a) put them on the samel level as Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus. b) judge them by one song. I completely agree!
addictedjamie Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 They're one of the most influentual modern bands, and they get treated as such: that ain't overrated.
AndrewW91 Posted December 20, 2010 Posted December 20, 2010 Know Your Enemy contains a simplistic three minute-long riff repetition that is too similar to Police on My Back to not be called plagiarism I hear no similarities to Police on My Back. Anyone else? Maybe the drums, but thats a common beat that more than just those two songs share.
Marlee Posted December 22, 2010 Posted December 22, 2010 Meh. people like to bitch....let them bitch Doesn't change how any of us feel about them
OverjoyedAndroid Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Man, I try to ignore this stuff, but people really need to get a life. I just think the term selling out should be annihilated completely. Just because you change your style doesn't mean it's for the money. Could there be a possibility that they GREW UP?! Apparently all the 'punks' out there want them to stay masturbating teens their whole life. Oh yeah, the major label thing. One question for them: WHO GIVES A FUCK? Just because their CDs are property of Reprise and not Lookout doesn't mean that they're a different band! I don't think anyone wants to live on drive through dinners their whole life either. Yeah, it means more money, but they were broke at the time! If you ask me, they were being smart. And why do people pick on GREEN DAY, of all bands! Hundreds of bands are signed to Reprise, so what's the point of bashing on the one that a lot of people care about? Sorry if I was all over the place, but this REALLY pisses me off. If you don't like a band, fuck off and let the fans enjoy it. GO SHOVE IT TOPTENZ YOU CAN'T EVEN SPELL SO DON'T ACT LIKE YOU'RE HOT SHIT OR SOMETHING.
Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I dunno why but I felt like searching "Green Day" on Pitchfork this morning and they have Bullet In A Bible as 3, 21st Century Breakdown as 4.6 (I think) then American Idiot as a 7.4 and Kerplunk as like an 8.6 . The funny yet completely unsurprising thing is that the good reviews actually review the music, yet the ones that pan them actually just sum up their career as the "journalist" sees it, and then state what the "journalist" thinks the band should or should not be saying and playing. It does frustrate me sometimes that my favourite band since I was 12 is probably the one band with the most bullshit written about them in the history of music, as it kinda impacts upon their long term legacy among music greats, but what can you do?
LinziLetterbomb Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 This guy obviously doesn't know what he's talking about! What a load of crap!
beejeezee Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Probably one of the most retarded things I have ever read. To start with When you ask someone if they like Green Day, one of two responses is typically offered: either a) yes or b) I liked old Green Day, Never in my life have I heard someone say they like Green Day or they liked old Green Day. Unless they weren't true Green Day fans, didn't know how to appreciate music, or weren't much of music fans to begin with. If you asked any actually fan of Green Day, he or she would say they love Green Day. Both the old style, and how over time Green Day has changed to what they are today. Listening to Boulevard of Broken Dreams out of choice is impossible without also cringing. What kind of shit is this. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is in my opinion of of Green Day's prettiest songs. The lyrics are very emotional. I love the guitar, drums, and bass. And Billie's voise is just, perfect. How can you not listen to it out of choice? When I get up in the morning the first thing I do is listen to BOBD, it inspires me. Cringing? I don't see how any can cringe from such a fantastic song, I would understand if Billie's voice was like a horse or something. But Billie has a lovely voice, especially in Boulevard of Broken Dreams. And how can you even put Green Day in a list with Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, and The Jonas Brothers. Three people who are actually overrated. Does every bastard think they have to try and put down the good bands. All you do is make fans like us pissed off, or maybe give some a good laugh. But besides that you are seriously wasting your time. So TopTenz people: FUCK YOU!
minority_defeats_majority Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Thats weird I always thought they were under rated. A good band having many fans doesn't mean over rated. Some of these people don't know what they are talking about they are just using there own opinion.
solongfromthestars Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Green Day were listed amongst the likes of the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber? No, just no. If they were just making the statement that in their opinion Green Day are overrated, then cool, that's their opinion. But putting them in the same catergory as Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne? No. I just looked at the website... they beat Ke$ha and Kanye West? I'm quite horrified.
jake smith Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 heard it all before so it doesnt bother me, but the guy who wrote that list is a joke
Broken_Tune Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 although i disagree, TopTenz is allowed to have their opinion even if it is wrong
Isabel Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 I'm not surprised that they're in that poll....everyone seems to think that Green Dayis overrated these days. I wouldn't bother letting it get to me, I'm not going to let some excuse for a poll tell me what music is and isn't overrated, I can form those opinions for myself.
Doris The Spider Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 Let them say what they want. People can say Green Day are "sellouts" (not true of couse), they can say they are over-rated (also not true) but I will love them anyway. Like someone said before, there is no greatest or good or whatever. IT'S ALL OPINION. I know....what I said is opinion too but whatever....
OverjoyedAndroid Posted January 22, 2011 Posted January 22, 2011 One thing that disappoints me is that they used possibly the two most annoying Green Day songs of all time to back up their claim. Bet they wouldn't be happy if they saw that.
Sabz Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 What a load of shit! Nirvana on there aswell? Just becuase they only had 4 albums doesnt mean they're overated, quality > quantity remember!
Kayfabe Posted January 23, 2011 Posted January 23, 2011 It's quite funny because now, in a sense, they've got underrated from being overrated. As in, you go to a person: "Hey, do you like Green Day" "Naw they're dumb idiots who only make gay songs like 'don't wanna be an american idiot'" And then you attempt to explain the complex intricacies of Green Day lyrics and meanings, how they have more depth than they first appear and that they also don't just make catchy little three chord songs, even though that's all they play on the radio. But no one ever wants to hear it
