ParadoxAndPlaid Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 This article sums up what every sick-up-the-ass critic ever says about them anymore. Not any new opinions or fresh words since 2004. I seriously wish we could just throw them all in a time machine and send them all back to their "good old days before music sucked" so we who live in the present did not have to hear them bitch. Why the hell do critic have jobs? Getting paid to voice their personal "professional" opinion, fuck that, we all do that here on the internet for free.
GDJonny Posted December 14, 2010 Author Posted December 14, 2010 I think that this topic of discussion is over-rated. Seriously, it's like every 5 minutes something like this appears. It's getting old and lame. Well then don't comment.
Just Kate Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Green Day have been rated 7th most over-rated acts in the world of music today on TopTenz. yeah right...
Kayleigh. Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 They seem like they're basing this only on Know Your Enemy, which isn't totally fair.. Just ignore it. You think anyone's really gonna give a shit anyway?
Hermione Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Haha wtf is TopTenz? What a useless article. The Kanye West and Nirvana paragraphs are ridiculous too, not bothering to read the rest.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Seems like that entire article only has one purpose: gaining attention by bashing popular artists, regardless of whether they're actually overrated or not.
heyohbilliejoe Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 arrrrg this is annoying. i think that people have to understand green day to see past this 'sell out/overated' shield that people put them behind. unless they've seen the interviews, really listened to lyrics of their songs, seen them live with the atmosphere or watched their crowd interaction on youtube videos, it is almost impossible to make a statement about how, not just green day, but anyone is as an artist/band. these writers and journalists just write what they're told to write - they don't know and even though it may be true in the case of some of the other listed names on the list its just a presumption The huge difference that favours green day as appose to someone like justin beiber is this: someone mentions "green day""have you seen them live?? its like mind-fuck - the sheer volume of sound and the accuracy of performance and sound mixing. and basically, its frickin' amazing" (or something like that) ^------------ all about talent and their dedication to their fanssomeone mentions "justin beiber""OMG OMG!!! JUSTIN IS SOOOOOO HOT. OMFG - HE WOULD SOOO GO OUT WITH ME IF WE MET!!!" or"justin needs to go die in a hole" (personally i dont have anything huge against him - i don't know him, but comparing him with green day is ridiculous. people who been playing music for people for 22+ years of their lives compared with someone whos been performing for what - two??) ^-------- anything about talent or his decication to them?? - no. and the fact that they picked boulevard as the video for the site (one of green days slower, down beat songs on AI (don't get me wrong though - i love it )) shows that they haven't made any effort to show green day as punk-rock or as being relatable to others or being rated overly by us for a reason.
Rosie May Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 "When you ask someone if they like Green Day, one of two responses is typically offered: either a) yes or b) I liked old Green Day. The reason being that they used to make punk music as legitimate punks, and played all the power chords and walking bass lines you’d expect from a young 90’s punk rock band. Now, in the 10’s, they are overrated thanks to the commercial success of American Idiot. Wow, how original of them, I've never heard anyone say that before, If Naything I think Green Day are generally underatted, it's only AI and Dookie that got the attention they deserved.
Katarina. Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 What I think? I don't care (if you don't care..). I don't care when people say they don't like the band, or they say they are overrated. It's their opinion. I know Green Day's music, I know I love it. People who say they are overrated clearly haven't heard all of their records/appreciate the music. Overrated/older music is better/they suck/whatever? That's fine, think what you want! I don't agree with it. I love Green Day, the music, the lyrics, everything. That's all I care about. (To be honest, I think Green Day is underrated. I wish people would look more into the music and the lyrics.)
luvgirlcl Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Well then don't comment. Maybe it sounded way more harsh than I intended to, but what's the problem with saying that my opinion is that the 'Green Day is over-rated' thing is getting old and boring, and that the fact that random people who still want the band to put out albums like Dookie and are stuck in the past is what's overrated? That's all, I'm not saying I don't care, cause in fact I do, it bugs me that people still milk this for all it's worth.
The Platypus! Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 If anything I think Green Day are underrated, they just don't seem to get as much credit as they deserve. Know Your Enemy BOBD AI and WMUWSE are all over rated but by the people who don't know Green Day that well. All the hardcore fans love all their music. Green Dy shouldn't even be on that list.
Izzard Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Green Day doesn't pay attention to their critics so neither will I....it just gets me down anyways
clairex Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 How can music be overrated? people buy or praise music because they like it, that is all there is to it! Who are these people to say something is overrated? When I hear that term, they may as well come out and say say all the people who like it are wrong and not qualified to rate the music, that a load of idiots are buying it!!
Schlappy Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 hmmmm this basically is saying that they are overrated because they are successful... even i could think of a better argument than that and i love them, i mean come on oh well haha i thought you thought they were overrated at first i was about to verbally abuse
GDJonny Posted December 14, 2010 Author Posted December 14, 2010 Maybe it sounded way more harsh than I intended to, but what's the problem with saying that my opinion is that the 'Green Day is over-rated' thing is getting old and boring, and that the fact that random people who still want the band to put out albums like Dookie and are stuck in the past is what's overrated? That's all, I'm not saying I don't care, cause in fact I do, it bugs me that people still milk this for all it's worth. Oh soz, I don't know why I wrote that, you have an opinion I do agree that this "sellout" shit isn't ending, it goes on and on and on.... There not gunna stay 19 forever.
21Heart_Grenades Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I hate it when people say stuff like this!!! It's just so annoying, ya'know. They're like, "Really?! You like Green Day?! They're horrible!" and "Why? Is it 'cause they have no sucess, no fans, and you get them all to yourself?!" But what people don't realize is that, they can have a career that people hate and still be very very VERY hilarious, smart, and amazing people. And with Green Day, they don't make the music for us, they make it for them. When it came to American Idiot, people who liked them started to not like them, because they just didn't wanna face reality. They're just like, "FUCK IT!!! We don't wanna listen to music about LIFE!!!" Sure, music is supposed to be something you escape to, but you have to wake up sometime, right?! I'm just sticking up for Green Day like I know most of us would, of course. I advise everyone to do the same, even if I am just 12, and even if some jerk/ass calls them sell-outs, over-rated, or even just plain terrible. I know sometimes we all wish that these people didn't exsist, but if they didn't then we'd all be the same!!!
Eeefaa. Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 one rep for saying what i wanted and the fucking beatles yeah thanks now my post has a big star on it
Bubbles. Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 They seem like they're basing this only on Know Your Enemy Exactly this. So many music channels, magazines and people do this. They hear one song and they base their opinion of the band/musician entirely on that one song. It's extremely ignorant. They are basing their opinion (that Green Day are over-rated) only on the songs they've released as singles. I think it's quite shallow, and if anything, in my opinion it shows how they are under-rated. Just because they are mainstream and heard about all the time doesn't mean they are over-rated; the majority of people that will hear a Green Day song on the radio or hear about them all the time won't know any of their songs besides the ones they've released as singles, and they can't judge a band's musical abilities based on a few songs, especially when they have like eight albums, have been going for 20+ years and in that time, earned everything they have. On the whole sellout accusation; The only thing Green Day have sold out are box offices.
oda Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 I'm under the impression that people that have no clue categorize green day as; old = dookie, new = AI, 21cb. I'm not gonna get into this discussion, but it pisses me off how ignorent some people are
Bastard of 1967 Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 They hear one song and they base their opinion of the band/musician entirely on that one song. It's extremely ignorant. ...and there's actually something very comical about using KYE as the bash-target. Once you get into the lyrics and look for how the song relates to what else is on 21CB, you find that KYE is actually laying out one of several key themes that Billie Joe has woven through the album. Read (listened to?) together with Restless Heart Syndrome, you find a call-ahead and call-back dialogue between the songs that basically goes: "Do you know your enemy?" "You are your own worst enemy" "Right here." The message that's buried in these two songs is that you can rail against the establishment, the greed, the powers that be, "the man" all you want, but 'til you fix the problem that lies between your own two ears, nothing, absolutely nothing, is going to change. Now comez along thiz Top Tenz snarky asshole who wants to take a dig at Green Day, and he takes aim at....this. is about all that I think is left to say. On the whole sellout accusation; The only thing Green Day have sold out are box offices. Good one. If I had any rep points left to give out today I'd have given you one for that.
Smoothed Out Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Wow I thought I'd never see the day anyone had the guts to put Green Day in the same catagory as Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus...
Opezi Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Eh, it doesn't bother me. I stopped caring a long time ago. Everyone has different opinions and are entitled to them. To say you like a band or not doesnt make it wrong or right. Everyone likes their own thing yknow. Besides, I doubt Green Day care either.
