The Day the Music Died (For Me)

lmao. The way the guy wrote the article made me laugh. I guess he's just going to have to live with the fact that Green day's music has evolved, just as the musicians thamselves have, which is natural. I think the author should stick an aerosol up his nose if he thinks that's the only thing you need to write good music...douchebag.. :P

I agree in the sense that I want Green Day to make music like they used to, but I disagree with how he mocks their music now. American Idiot was a masterpiece, and it's about the music, not the look of tje band. I'm not the only one who would like to see them ditch the eyeliner and make 3 minute, fast, punk rock songs like the ones we saw in the early days.

However, I know that we're talking about Green Day here, and they're going to do what they want, what they feel is right, regardless of what people say. I'm pretty sure I'll love whatever they come out with next, I just dont want another 21st Century Breakdown :/

A wise man once said... "opinions are like assholes-- everyone's got one"

I respect his opinion at least he says what he REALLY thinks, but the whole stick a can of aerosol up your nose and sit down with a guitar really bothered me too. Not cool, that hit way below the belt for me. Green Day to me has matured, but they are not anywhere near slowing down when it comes to making music. And really the solution is quite simple if some body doesn't like the newer stuff of any band . . . Don't listen to that stuff!!

And most of them stink.

I don't agree with him at all, as I think it is great what Green Day has achieved since AI and how they have stayed relevant and I think the newer albums are amazing.

However Dookie was a cultral mile stone that shaped peoples lives and music experiences (along with Nirvana). The younger members on here often say how AI changed their lives and how much it means to them, well that is what the Dookie album means to people. I think that Dookie has become a symbol of peoples youth back in the 90s. I listen to Dookie and it reminds me of times as a teenager, I got the album when I was 13 so grew up with it.

I feel that some people don't like what they know changing because it reminds them that a time is passing them by, that time has gone and past. I am sure it is something a lot of people deal with as they get older, not necessarily just about music though.

The drug thing is just stupid, but I have heard people say it about Metallica, Aerosmith & RHCP. I don't understand why, espcially from fans who say the love the band, just look at what happened to Kurt Cobain.

I wrote his:

I think you're just an embittered old ass who can't accept that time changes and music styles change and don't stay constant all the time. Fine, if you wanna live in your 90s, I have to say I love to listen to 70s stuff too but I live in the future and don't bitch about those bands only cause they changed a bit. I think they're still doing great music, even better music most of all Green Day, my favorite album is american idiot, I love dookie too for sure but I think they became adults now and it would be creepy if they would still sing about the same stuff about doing drugs and masturbation, isn't that creepy for a 38-year-old? Be serious. And I love their new issues, how America's economy crashed and that it has to be alleviated again, those are more important issues. So let this go round your head and think about this and then tell me what you can actually say now after this!

The thing about this is that if Green Day were still singing about girls and masturbation, people just like this guy would be complaining that they're immature. He'd also complain because he'd say they were repeating themselves.

I understand that people like him don't like the newer music, but bitching about it isn't going to change anything - why doesn't he just accept that and go and find a band he does like? Music isn't about making the same record over and over. It's about doing something different every time, doing what you love in whichever direction you want to go. It isn't about pleasing people who refuse to accept that Bands evolve and grow up whether you like it or not.

I love all Green Day, but even if I hated the next album, I'd still respect them for doing what they want, not repeating themselves and being talented musicians. I'd still listen to the old music and be the same Green Day fan I've always been.

I didn't mean that to turn into a rant  but yeah that's just my personal opinion. Jolly good.

those killed me.... aaand...

that's a good question xD

I think it's "I went to a whore HE said my life's a bore." and "I went to a shrink to analyze my dreams SHE says it's lack of sex that's bringing me down." to show how confused he is. That's only my explanation. How do the other guys see this?

Did like this line, even though I do like most of their American Idiot videos:

"Make a couple of songs about war, look up towards the sky in your videos, man-scara running off your eyelids like the talent pouring into the gutter."

c'mon where in their videos do they look up to the sky?

And guyliner is hot! :eyebrow:

I don't think Green Day have completely turned their backs on the old music style anyway. I can even hear an influence from older stuff in their new stuff. I could totally see songs on Dookie coming from the character Jesus of Suburbia. Songs like Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case & Longview, even She could easily be a song for JOB to sing.

One thing I think people like this bloke misunderstand is that they don't sing about issues like war just to look up to the sky in eyeliner or whatever. Just because he'd rather masturbate than address important issues doesn't mean Green Day are trying to be the Jonas Brothers. I agree that most music these days is crap and that kids don't understand good music, but Green Day isn't bad music just because they've evolved.

Exactly! If you look at the backdrop when they've played She on the 21CB tour, they actually use a picture of Gloria. Songs from any of the earlier albums could be sung by any of the characters from AI or 21CB.

Actually this guy is right but the way he speaks his mind is not something I approve. If I were an old fan of these bands that change would piss me off too.But still I would accept the change of my fav bands.

that's a good question xD

BJ has said that he says both 'he' and 'she' in Basket Case because he didn't want to say a specific gender.

did not know that!

I always thought it was a sort of purposefull mix up between the shrink and the whore cause the whole song's about being a bit messed up, but I guess not

yeah, that's what i've thought as well, but i needed evidence (?) thanks! :D

just like in the Kerplunk version of Welcome to Paradise he accidentially sings "it nows" instead of "it's now"

lol, I never noticed that till now! xD

I haven't heard that either. Do you remember where he said it?

He said it in a video interview that I've seen on Youtube from 1995 I think. I'll see if I can find it. :)

EDIT:

I didn't find it. But I clearly remember him being asked about and he said "no specific gender, y' know". I thought it was from MTV Raw, but it wasn't.

Sorry. :(

first of all he can go to hell for that crap about american idiot, but he does kinda have a point about some of their recent stuff...

also i hate to admit that he is 100% right in my opinion about weezer, seriously; i'm your daddy...jesus that's bad.

I must admit I still really love Weezer, even if the stuff isn't as good as it used to be, I own up that I like the Make Believe album even though deep down I know it is bad!

hes right about weezer..ok

but hes totally wrong with Green Day and American Idiot..I dont agree with it

 He's so whiny, it's fine for him to prefer the 90's stuff, but it's like he expects them to make music for him and not for themselves. I always hate as well when people bring their image into the argument, it's completely irrelevant to the music, it's usually the people who say they don't care about a bands image that get theirknickers in a twist when they wear a little eyeliner.

So... on one hand he dislikes that Pearl Jam started to make songs that all sound the same but at the same time he wants Weezer, Green Day and The Offspring to go back, make the same music as they used to?

That's the only thing in that article that didn't make sense to me.

Exactly! There's no point in repeating themselves and making another Dookie, it just wouldnt make any sense now.

Also LOL Andres when I saw this thread title I thought you were making a solemn announcement that you're no longer a Green Day fan or something.

That's what I thought too for a second, I was getting worried

Where did the guy go that wrote Basket Case?
Oh, please. He didn't go anywhere, he just grew up. You can't expect him to be here almost 20 years later still writing songs like Basket Case.

I know some people might want Green Day to go back to their roots, but come on - they simply can't stay the same band for 20 years.

If they did, the songs would get repetitive (viz the Pearl Jam comment). If they'd change - people would always complain, because accepting any change is difficult for most of us.

I think Green Day handled staying in between the 2 extremes perfectly.

All things aside, I can't really respect someone who said that American Idiot is weird synth crap.

I guess our favorite bands are sell outs now just because this guy don't like em. Oh well! Whoopsie fucking do.

Calling American Idiot 'weird synth crap' is like saying Taylor Swift is a rapper.

Okay I know people already talked about this, but yeah the "weird synth crap"?? I think HE'S the one with the aerosol can up his nose.
