Which Direction Next?

Green Day were never really very 'aggressive' maybe on Insomniac but that was hardly "the Green Day that they started with." Besides wouldn't that be going backwards rather than forwards?

Also if either Jason W, Freese or Jeff aren't there for the next tour I'm going to be pissed.

That was exactly my point earlier, I like the way you said it better though. The Jasons ain't going nowhere, they all work too damn well together whether in the studio or on the road. Jeff worked a *treat* for their sound on the last tour and I'd love to see him again on the next one. How to tell: Keep an eye out for their appearances going forward (if they get called on to do a one-off appearance something like another SNL, Jimmy Fallon, or Monday Night Football gig) between now and next album. If Jeff's on stage with them you know there's a possibility we'll see more of him with the band in the future.

Thank you!

Yeah the Jason's are definitely sticking around, I just hope Jeff will stay! I loved him on this tour but the musicians that have his position in the live show revolve a bit don't they.. =/ I'll keep an eye out on that!

Question: How do you propose to turn back the clock and make them young twentysomethings again?

There is no need to make them young again...they just need to stop experimenting and stick with their roots. :shifty:

Imo, they were better off just the 3 of them. If all of the guys, (the two Jasons, Ronnie and Jeff) stay, Green Day should no longer be said to only consist of 3 guys.

I would like them to remake 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (the whole compilation, not just 39/Smooth) what with better equipment and Billie Joe's different-sounding voice.

What are their roots though? Their first album is full of sappy love songs and they got called "not punk enough" even back then. They've always experimented with different styles and that's what's always set them apart from other bands. Think of a song like Words I Might Have Ate, with acoustic guitar and 60s style vocals - they were exploring different sounds right from the start.

They've changed and progressed with every album before and after they brought in extra live musicians, those guys really don't have anything to do with it. All they do is beef up their live sound and free up Billie Joe to run around and entertain the crowd a bit more.

As most fans, i would like to see them go back to their roots. Dookie and Insomniac style!

Why hasnt this thread been merged with the other 'which direction...?' thread?

They should just write shitty songs because those are always good, and spent the rest of their lives doing tiny, private gigs everywhere.

Metallic punk rock if it exists! xD it sounds really weird!

I don't care what they will choose cause I know that the next album will be amazing.

I defintily agree with you, but it seems that most fans actually perfer Green Day to keep doing what they are currently producing...Oh well, we can be the minority :)

Their roots would be the self proclaimed "snotty outcasted punks" You say their first album was full of sappy love songs...21st CB hasn't really stretched that far from it...it's close to their softest album yet...even Warning sounds darker and more pissed off then these 'concept' albums. Why can' they just make a record with no story line..it gets old after awhile...

No, I think going backwards will be like retreating in a war... Heading back with their tails between their legs. If pushing forward means taking inspiration from more punk music, and doing something simple then I say do it - but no way to I want them to go back. It's just not Green Day.

I like this. well put :)

Whatever they do it will good I think, but, I really would like to hear something Nimrod-Warning-American Idiot mix. It would be interesting for me.

My point is --- and trust me on this -- as you age, you see the world differently than you did when you were 10, 20, 30 years younger. If you don't evolve with it, you trap yourself, you get stale and boring. I don't *want* to hear Green Day doing only the same thing they did back in the pre-Warning days. I'd like to see them take their punk roots in different directions, fuse in different elements (example: Tre's Latin rhythm in Peacemaker), and give us something that's both new *and* true to who they are now.

im not really sure, i just think Green Day will go somewhere different cos they dont seem to repeat eras but as most people have already said, wherever they do go, it will always be great!

I can compromise with this

But knowledge is pain. They seem to have forgotten where they came from...almost selling out, but I dont want to start up an argument on that topic...... With this it seems that they are hurting their career than helping. I know they are still children and punk at heart, but the direction they are taking is just not what I would have seen Green Day taking 10 years ago. Sure, experimenting can be a good thing, but I dont want to see them taking a wrong turn. If Green Day went death metal, how many of you would want to listen to them. What about complete jazz?

But I can agree with you to a certain extent  nicely put

back to the 39 stuff pleeeeeeeease awesome solos!!!

I honestly don't know which direction I'd prefer. And I'd rather not act like I know what's best for them. So far I haven't been disappointed with anything and I trust them to make something great. I don't speculate any further than that, I'll just be watching curiously to see where they're going next and let them surprise me.

Likewise. -- There's a real yin/yang thing going on between what we like about the old and what we'd like to see them do going forward. I think that's one of the themes in Walking Contradiction, actually, but I'll save my detailed thoughs on that 'til Walking Contradiction comes up for SOTW!

Warning sounding dark and pissed off? Some of the lyrics aside, that album sounds like it was made on pure happiness and cotton candy

Well, they only tour with them, they're not involved with the recording process. I wouldn't say they are or should be part of Green Day.

If they delved into putting more electronic sounds on their next album - e.g synthesizers - it would be pretty interesting.

I didn't say Warning sounded dark and pissed off, but compared to 21st Century Breakdown, its more expressive to their style than all these rock operas...

Get your facts straight before you go bashin...

And about the Jasons and Blake, and Jeff, they do a lot now in the band that they should be considered part of it...they shouldn't have to 'earn' a spot...when someone says "Hey let's go to a Green Day concert" you would expect those 3 guys, not additional people. Wouldn't you want proper recognition?!

I don't think Ronnie Blake is doing any work with the band anymore. I've also heard that Jason White's been offered an official spot with the band several times but he's declined...loves touring with them, he's been given many cameos in their videos, but he's still known as the unofficial fourth member of Green Day (and seems to prefer it that way). Freese has done keyboard work with the band in the studio and has a credit in the 21CB album insert.

Would be interesting, kinda like Green Day mixed with The Network.

Well it's all personal for me I suppose. I grew up with Green Day just being the original 3 and was utterly surprised when I saw some new up coming faces...
