Lu. Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I can't compare his vocals between pre-AI albums and post-AI, I mean, they're too different to me but in good ways: in the first records, his voice is more natural and suits perfectly with the themes of most of the songs, while in AI&21CB his voice still has this little "spice" of rage and anger and so, but it seems as if he discovered or re-discovered his natural gift of singing and tries things like singing sweeter ballads and stuff... I don't know how to explain it, lol. Although his voice has always been awesome, since AI he sounds not overproduced but showing hard work and special dedication to his vocals. So yeah, I love American Idiot when it comes to Billie's voice. <3
Sarabeth Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I think he sounds good in every album, but the sound from Dookie is my favorite because its a bit raw. But I love it all. I like the diversity. I think thats why I have liked Green Day for so long. I usualy get bored with a band within a few months, but they have so many different things, so it keeps me interested.
Tiffx Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Nimrod & Warning. I love the vocals on Macy's Day Parade, especially at the end of the song. I LOVE his vocals on Macy's Day Parade. I love his vocals on everything pre 21CB. I think on 21CB his voice was a bit over-produced and it's noticeable. But he still sounds amazing live. and obviously his voice is going to change as he gets older.
Axel Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 1039:Nasal type voice, high pitched, little annoying Kerplunk: Hit puberty, great raw voice Dookie: Same as Kerplunk only more agressive Insomniac: Really aggressive, Nimrod: Nimrod has way too many songs with different vocals, (Take Back, The Grouch, Redundant, all different) Warning: Great, nice and clean American Idiot: Kind of over produced 21'st Century breakdown: More nasal then 1039
Burnout98 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 In my opinion, i liked his voice in, Insomniac, Warning, and i absolutely loved it in American Idiot! But still, his voice sounds great anywhere....
fran_face Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I'll always love his raw vocal style from Kerplunk as that was when I got hooked on Green Day but in terms of purely tuneful vocals I have to agree with Warning, they have an almost folk sounding quality. I think I'm the only one not into the sound on AI, it seemed a little forced, like he just discovered a new toy (amazing vocal range) and wanted to show it off, whereas I feel it was more controlled ,subtle, on 21CB. Although my fav is the kinda recent changes to Brain Stew *live*, I get tingles from the high pitched 'skull' soon followed by the bellowing angry scream of 'fucked up and spun out in my room' . PS: Hi, I'm a long time lurker but a pretty new poster.
green day climber Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 i already posted, but i wanted to add that in On The Ave V2 by Pinhead Gunpowder, his voice sounds amazing!!!!! Its just so sweet and awesome!
in_your_face Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 i prefer his voice during the American Idiot era to any other. it' quite clear, and it's easy to interpret the songs without the aid of the lyrics book. His 'older' voice was hoarse, but i very much like his splendid baritone. FESS UP, HIS OLD VOICE WAS FROGHORN CACOPHONY!!!!!!!
DecanoLP Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Although my fav is the kinda recent changes to Brain Stew *live*, I get tingles from the high pitched 'skull' soon followed by the bellowing angry scream of 'fucked up and spun out in my room' . This!
bat-chen Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 He have a good voice in all the album but my favorites it's from Warning until those days.
heyohbilliejoe Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 i think it has to be considerred that billie was just a tad high at that chicago gig , which could have affected his voice - probably not actually... i dunno, i do like his voice on 21CB cos its kinda more rough so i think it brings back that 'unrehearsed' sound of earlier albums like kerplunk and dookie, yet the songs are all really well put together. however dookie and warning are my favourite green day albums so its hard to know if thats cos of billies voice or if its cos perhaps those albums (dookie especially) are closer to the old punk-rock stuff they were doing. but i think that the vocals on american idiot are really clean sounding, which definitely conveys the meaning of the lyrics more. my friend lent me 1,039/slappy a couple of weeks ago and bj sounds so much younger on that album which is kinda cute cos they all seem so young ... Y'KNOW WHAT?? I HAVE NO FRICKIN' IDEA. i can absolutely see the difference but i think thats the cool thing about green day having so many albums - is that you can see the difference in the music, the production, the vocals etc. its kinda fun to compare them actually. eg. bj's voice on 1,039/slappy (paper lanterns) 1990: and the same song live in prague 2010: the diffrence is actually pretty interesting. but then theres also the sound quality to consider on the first one i guess... (try to see past that ) wow - a bit of an essay... sorry
Hermione Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 i already posted, but i wanted to add that in On The Ave V2 by Pinhead Gunpowder, his voice sounds amazing!!!!! Its just so sweet and awesome! I agree . I remember when V1 came out, loads of people on here were saying it was really good but it would be amazing to hear a version with Billie on it.........and then like 2 days later hey presto they put out the Billie version , it was great. Such beautiful vocals on that song, his and Jason's voices compliment each other so well.
Katarina. Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I agree . Beautiful vocals indeed. It's one of my favorite PHGP songs as well.
Maddy. Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 american idiot 4eva his voice just sounds so raw and emotional and beautiful. he hasn't got the greatest voice ever but it suits the music and it sounds brilliant. whatsername is just perfect. all songs really just wouldn't sound right with another vocalist. i can't put how i feel about it into words but i'll just say that it's really amazing how he makes the songs on american idiot ~come to life~
DecanoLP Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I have to agree with the fact that the old songs, especially Paper Lanterns (I fell in love with Billie's voice on this one) sounded very good live in 2009 and 2010.
Tubbie Head Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I think his voice on Working Class Hero is just perfect Just omg. That was the main reason that got me into GD.. I loved his voice so much when I heard the cover of WCH, then went to look at every other album, and there we go... I don't care what you say, but to me Billie has the most amazing voice, the only one that makes my heart melt every time I hear it... I just can't explain it
in_your_face Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 we are on the verge of starting a debate over Billie's voice here.
Cym Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I definitely admire his vocal range.. live =SWEET JESUS that man can sing... I was crying like a baby when he was singing 'Before the Lobotomy" because it was just so beautiful... he was standing in front of me and everything I think his voice has always been great, he's just been learning how to perfect it and make it more powerful. My jaw dropped when I heard recordings of when he was on Broadway. He is really talented
Wretched & Divine Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I don't know that I can really compare his vocals in the first place, because it's only natural that as he's progressed as a vocalist, his voice has changed and taken on a different sound. Billie's voice is just... Billie's voice to me lol. But I guess when it comes down to it, I prefer his voice on AI and especially 21CB because I think he's got a wider range of notes that he hits. There's something more melodic about his voice as it is now than there was back around Kerplunk/Dookie/Insomniac. To my ears, that is.
Izzard Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 I like how he 'challenges' his voice on 21CB. I think it's quite lovely. His vocals on AI and 21CB are tied for me. Not that I don't like his voice on previous albums...I just like these better..it sounds less bratty/snotty.
cityof_lust17 Posted December 6, 2010 Posted December 6, 2010 I love Billie's voice on Warning to me thats when he sounded the best... along with American Idiot. Plus i also love how he sounds on slappy hours
radiofriendlyunitshifter Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 the american idiot vocals are pretty awesome, but sometimes it feels like they put some effects on it. i like kerplunk and dookie
SmoothSlappyHours Posted December 7, 2010 Posted December 7, 2010 It's all great.. His voice began to develop on Warning, specifically and now his voice is stuck in my head... I have to agree with the fact that the old songs, especially Paper Lanterns (I fell in love with Billie's voice on this one) sounded very good live in 2009 and 2010. yeah... I agree... I fell in love with his voice on 86, Paper Lanterns, Going to Pasalacqua and At The Library... Though I started listening to more of Green Day after I saw the vid of 21 Guns
