Gd Lyrics That Don't Really Make Sense

Been waiting for somebody to post on here so it didn't look like I absolutely owned the page with my massive post...

A line I've never really understood is in Stay The Night - don't know if these lyrics are correct because they haven't been released, but:

I’m just sick and tired of feeling so alone,

I don’t understand the point if you have to go home,

Or we’ll just stay and kill the circles round my eyes,

Or we could watch the stars until the sun begins to rise

... 'Kill the circles round my eyes' - is that some kind of expression?

I hear it as:

'why won't you stay and cure the circles round my eyes'

'circles round my eyes' implies either crying (puffy eyes) or insomnia (bags under your eyes from tiredness)

So, 'why won't you stay and cure the circles round my eyes' = why won't you stay and stop my crying/let me sleep peacefully

:)

a quick google answered this nicely

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estate_liquidation

basically, all of his posessions got sold for money

'estate' is not just house properties, but all of your assets and debts

Thanks! I'm surprised it's actually something definite and not another ambiguous BJ metaphor.

yeah, liquidate is a strange term. It's only used for financial stuff; it's not used in everyday talk.

I'm still a bit confused as to its full meaning, but I think I've got the basic idea.

That makes so much more sense! I can't remember where I got the lyrics from (it wasn't on the forum, I wasn't a member then) so they are probably wrong

Thanks for clearing it up, every time I listened to it I was like... wtf

no worries!

and the GDA ones are wrong too, if that makes you feel any better.

They've got:

I gotta know til ?? got away

when it's clearly:

I gotta know if you're the one that got away

I never heard that word before actually. I thought it meant something like a firm object turning into liquid, that it "liquidated".

stupid me  well thanks again for clearing up

Question marks, really GDA? I think some of the lyrics need re-doing on there tbh, to get all the grammar right and stuff. I'm sure it's on the list. :P

aha, you cna't help question marks on some of the live recordings, or on the Sweer Children EP. I don't think even Billie knew what the fuck he was singing in those 3 songs.

some of the song meanings need re-doing, that's for sure

*cough86cough*

something that has turned into a liquid is 'liquified'

and don't think you're stupid for not knowing 'liquidated' - it's an obscure term that I'm sure the majority of native enlish speakers don't know the meaning of :)

I didn't know what it meant until I googled it.

Coca cola execution?

Someone already asked that on the first page, but what we said was that Coca-Cola is a huge symbol for commercialism, so coca-cola execution = consumerism will be the end of us.

I always suspected there was a typical Billie double meaning behind the 'liquidate' line - the meaning as you said, but also possibly hinting that Mr Whirly literally "liquidised his assets', ie turned all his money/possessions into booze

For me, it brings the idea of executions as some kind of prime-time, televised thing, sponsored by 'Coca-Cola'. It feeds into the whole culture of reality tv and also the sense that anything is up for commercial exploitation.

I like this interpretation. I like it a lot.

Agreed :)

I was going to ask the meaning behind "Virginia was a lot lizard from FLA" but then I looked up lot lizard like a good, self-sufficicent girl and it made sense

And just so this post isn't a complete waste...

Lot lizard: A prostitute at a truck stop

One light, one mind flashing in the dark

I'm not sure if I fully understand the meaning of this line. Dare to explain me your interpretations? (:

I think he's talking about being yourself. Being one unique person thinking for yourself and standing out from the crowd like a light flashing in the dark. Like the rest of the song this line's celebrating being a "minority" - being yourself instead of being a sheep following the crowd.

Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone.

Seriously, what the fuck?

I think WTF about this one all the time. Ha ha

I kind of thought of it along the lines of the saying "you can't get blood from a stone".

I'm not sure the original meaning of that saying, but my 17 year old mind has come up with my personal conclusion of how people pray to statues of Mary, Jesus, etc (I'm not well versed in different religions, and those two are first to spring to mind) but ultimately they're just praying to a stone who won't feel anything (ie, no blood)

Then to me "looking for forgiveness from a stone?" is like praying to one of these religious statues, asking whomever you believe in to forgive you, but... it's just a stone/statue. Then Christian could A - either be taking that as having done his religious custom, and now feels forgiven, or B - he realizes it's pointless. I think Christian most likely would be leaning towards B, but... it's not like I know him or anything ;)

I'm not necessarily saying these are my beliefs or anything, and I'm not trying to take a stance against certain customs and beliefs. That's just what I interpretted it as.

Wow. That's a really good explanation!

the song title Platypus

just...

why?

I heard him say once that it was just because he'd always wanted to call a song Platypus. Seems good enough for me.

Ooh that's good and you're probably right.

Okay, that's also how I have always seen it. Thanks, Hermione! :)

'The space between heaven and hell,' could mean Earth - heaven above, hell below - or it could mean right and wrong, good and bad.

So if you'd interpret it as Earth; he's not sure what he's doing anymore or where he's going with his life.

Right/Wrong,Good/Bad etc; He's not sure which one he is anymore, whether he's right or wrong, good or bad, belongs in Heaven or Hell.

the dummy failed the crash test collecting unemployment checks. :ermm:

That makes more sense when you add on the next line.

The dummy failed the crash test

Collecting unemployment checks

Like a flunkie along for the ride

The crash test dummy failed, he gave up and now he's sitting on his ass collecting unemployment benefits. He's like millions of other people who are much too content with taking a check off the government instead of getting off their ass and working.

"Bringing on the fury

Revolt against the honor to obey

Overthrow the effigy

The vast majority

Burning down the foreman of control"

and

"Red alert is the color of panic

Elevated to the point of static"

with the "Red alert is the color of panic" lyric i think he's talking about when the government issued a stupid color chat thing to judge the treat of terrorism at any given moment. i remember red was the very highest. it was pretty sad that the American people needed a color coded chart to know how frightened to be... oh prez bush.... i could be wrong but thats what it makes me think of

you know like a crash test dummy when they test the safety of cars and things? and well unemployment checks i assume you know what that means... in reference to the poor job market everyones out of work

"I'm not in love cause I'm a mess"

Why can't you be in love just because you're a mess?

"I'm not in love cause I'm a mess"

Why can't you be in love just because you're a mess?

Well, maybe it's one of those things where you're just so overwhelmed with everything going on in your life that you just can't spare any thought for love. Like if your whole life is a mess, putting it back together would be your priority, not finding a girlfriend.

Or, it could simply be that that part of the song is full of contradictions or things that don't necessarily go together. For example:

I'm not stoned, I'm just fucked up

I got so high, I can't stand up

Contradiction right there. The lyric you're referring to could just be part of that jumble of intentionally mismatched lyrics.

EDIT: OOH, or maybe the part about being high is related to your lyric. He's not in love, he's just stoned (which would make him a mental mess) and he just FEELS like he's in love.

Like a liar looking for forgivness from a stone.

To me thats a punch to every type of religion. People keep doing stuff they know is bad and then feel better by praying.

Every religion is one fucking lie so the cross/buddha/whatever they are praying to is just a stone. You wont get foregiveness that way.

A song that had totally different meaning to me before I learned what one word meant was Redundant.

If you take out the word Redundant its completely like a "I love you to much" song. Not a "our love is dying song". :P
