green day is Posted December 11, 2010 Author Posted December 11, 2010 that makes so much more sense to me now..... That's the point of this thread
Ellenkc Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 I thought of a couple that don't quite jive: in JOS "no one ever died for my sins in hell, as far as I can tell, at least the ones I got away with" If you think about it, its kind of contradictory because you can't get away with sins. The other from Stuck with Me "moving on I always thought I realized you've imagined" huh? I guess he means that nobody has ever suffered over the bad stuff he's done, at least not the sins people are aware of, the sins he's 'got away with' because he's the only one who knows they happened.
pasalaska Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 The other from Stuck with Me "moving on I always thought I realized you've imagined" huh? I think you mean Do Da Da. and yeah, I'm a bit stuck on this one too. but GDA has the lyrics wrong: Hand up your soul to my wrist And I'll vow my trust to you Moving on and I always thought I realized you've imagined You take the repurcussions Headaches and anxieties Advancing my frustrations It should be: Hand up your soul to my wrist And I'll vow my trust to you Moving here I always thought I realized you've imagined Rushings of my depression Sacrifice everything (this is how azlyrics.com and other sites have it)

Maybe if this is sort of about Adie moving to California for Billie, you could look at it that way. Like he's saying about her 'moving here' for him makes him realise what she's given up for him and so sometimes he feels bad for what she lost?! I don't know if that makes any sense to anyone else, or just me! meh!
HoneyDo666 Posted December 11, 2010 Posted December 11, 2010 So it's more like he's telling a pressure cooker to pick his brain and tell him he's insane.... Even more confusing. Pressure Cooker's make things soft and mushy, so they disintegrate easier. If you were to pressure cook a brain, it would be useless. The lyric makes sense to me.

Silverlight Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 I've been thinking about that line in Basket Case. The one that goes, "I went to a shrink, to analyze my dreams, she said it's lack of sex that's bringing me down. I went a whore, he said my life's a bore and quit my whining 'cause it's bringing her down" This is my theory: because the shrink said he has/getting lack of sex or whatever, and the whore said his life was a bore (most likely because he's not getting enough sex) and the 'quit my whining 'cause it's bringing her down' part is addressing him not giving his wife/ partner what they need. ^that probably didn't make any sense, but that's just my theory^

I like that. It's a god interpretation.
Eirik Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 Well, considering Billie has already explained what it means, I don't see the need to analyze it any differently.
oda Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 "Home is where your heart is but what a shame, cause everyones heart doesn't beat the same. It's beating out of time." It's not that it doesn't make sense, it's just that i findt it hard to explain with other words. What do y'all think?
green day is Posted December 12, 2010 Author Posted December 12, 2010 Well, considering Billie has already explained what it means, I don't see the need to analyze it any differently. I completely forgot he talked about that line! Unfortunately, I also forgot what he said. Mind giving me a refresher?
Eirik Posted December 12, 2010 Posted December 12, 2010 He said that he did it so that it wasn't gender specific, pretty sure that was the only reason.
Little Girl Little One Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 Ah, I always thought that Basket Case line was a sort of wink at his bisexuality, that it could go either way.
spark in the night Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 If Billie puts "river of a shadow of a doubt" in any future song I will squish him MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE
green day is Posted December 13, 2010 Author Posted December 13, 2010 If Billie puts "river of a shadow of a doubt" in any future song I will squish him MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE It's.... Edge of a shadow of a doubt. Not river.... As in, he almost has no doubts about it, but not quite. "As I stepped tot he edge of a shadow of a doubt, with my conscious beating" Since Hold On is about a friend of Billie's who had three friends die in the same month, we can only assume the doubts are about suicide.

She was talking about East Jesus Nowhere, silly. "I threw my crutches 'in the river of a shadow of doubt.'" And yeah, I have no idea what to make of that one.
TheSaltOfTheEarth Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 "Home is where your heart is but what a shame, cause everyones heart doesn't beat the same. It's beating out of time." It's not that it doesn't make sense, it's just that i findt it hard to explain with other words. What do y'all think? I love this line. I'm not sure how to explain it either, but I'll try. To me, its about being discontent with your home and your family and everything. Like, your heart is yearning to be anywhere BUT home, that you just want to get away from it and leave it all behind. Your heart is away from home; it's beating out of time. That's how I always interpreted it. This lyric is just beautiful, one of my favourite lines ever.
spark in the night Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 yeah I was referring to EJN, but I knew that those lyrics or some combination of those words were sung in several songs second failed pwn for you Jesus^of^Suburbia

Pupulainen Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 It's an allusion to something in the Bible. I can't find the exact extract, but it's in there. That's why it's in East Jesus Nowhere because the song is about religion Quite surprised no one's got this yet! EDIT - Sorry, I didn't explain what it meant Like I said I'm not sure how it's worded in the bible, but I think Billie's referring to how religion is sort of a crutch (something to lean on) and he's throwing it away into this river mentioned in the Bible. That makes sense to me at least. Good explanation.
Little Girl Little One Posted December 13, 2010 Posted December 13, 2010 You know, I always interpreted that "Home is where your heart is" line differently, for two reasons: - I know the next part Billie sings is "but what a shame, 'cause everyone's heart doesn't beat the same; it's beating out of time" but in the lyric booklet, he writes "We're beating out of time." The second version is always what I think when I hear the song. - I never understood the "home is where your heart is" expression as meaning "the place where you grew up is where your heart is," I thought it meant something more like "anywhere can be home if that's where your heart is (i.e.: where you feel you belong)." I analyzed the line as meaning something more along the lines of "We all belong somewhere, but we don't all belong together, in the same place. It's a pity, because even if I like you guys, we have our own separate paths to follow." The interpretation you all said is probably more along the lines of what Billie meant; mine just fits better with my own life, so that's how I personally see it.
Little Girl Little One Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Ooh, I have another one. "She's riding her bike like a fugitive of critical mass" She's an intense cyclist? Ok.

foxborohottub Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 "critical mass" is a monthly bicycle protest in san francisco that shuts down main roads with hundreds of punkish bike riders. they ride around for a few hours causing huge traffic jams while the cops try to keep them from getting on the freeway.

That is AWESOME What are they protesting?
