Vespertine Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 "where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself?" lol it probably makes sense with interpretation, but I just can't understand this haha
Ellenkc Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 "where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself?" lol it probably makes sense with interpretation, but I just can't understand this haha What will people die for, when there is nothing left to die for? I couldn't think of another way to phrase that, but that's what I think it means
IlariaIDIOT Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 the song title Platypus just... why? ahah I agreee!
Rosie May Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I text a postcard sent to you interesting how he used the verb 'to text', but you don't text postcards, you mail them? Yeah that confuses me as well For the "forgiveness from a stone" line, I always thought it was like, someone looking for forgiveness from a cold, hardened, heartless person who wasn't going to give it. Someone like a stone. Ha. I sort of thought it was something like that as well, I've always interperted that song as if it's from Christian to Gloria, but this thread is making me see it in loads of other ways
green day is Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 What will people die for, when there is nothing left to die for? I couldn't think of another way to phrase that, but that's what I think it means Best interpretation ever.

Lu. Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 "And I feel lonely for all the losers that will never take the time to say what is really on their mind" I have three options: A) GDA lyrics are wrong (which is impossible) B) "to feel lonely" has another idiomatic meaning apart from the literal one C) It doesn't make sense. Anyway, When It's Time will always be one of my favourite songs, no matter how nonsense it may be lol
Eirik Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Or D) Billie Joe has the ability to be empathic? The people that don't ever say what's on their mind, end up alone, and Billie doesn't like that, he feels for them.

Billie writes songs for people far more intelligent than me lol
Four. Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 the song title Platypus just... why? Platypus because Billie Joe thinks platypuses are ugly. I have to disagree, though. they are cute as hell. *cough* I never understand the part in Chump where he goes: Magic Man, Egocentric Plastic-Man. What the hell's that supposed to mean?

Lu. Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Oh, it makes sense to me. I know it does, actually I didn't mean the song or the line didn't make sense, I just couldn't understand why he had put "lonely" instead of many other adjectives. It's not BJ's fault, my English sucks :/
farley drexel hatcher Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 I think the old 'dead skin on trial' needs to be mentioned here! There are a thousand ways to interpret that I think, but every one I've heard seems to be clutching at straws ... To be honest, I think Billie just wanted a line that had something to do with the past and a word that rhymed with 'while', because the line that comes after that is fantastic. Or it could have something to do with the previous line of "tattoos of memories". Tattoos, dead skin. I dunno that's how I saw it. The 'tattoos' started off as memories but ended up as nothing but 'dead skin' he'd need to answer up to, hence 'on trial'. So basically, the scars will always show. I don't know if I explained that well but that's how I always saw it. XD

Little Girl Little One Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Platypus because Billie Joe thinks platypuses are ugly. I have to disagree, though. they are cute as hell. *cough* I never understand the part in Chump where he goes: Magic Man, Egocentric Plastic-Man. What the hell's that supposed to mean? My interpretation of that Chump line: Magic Man: The way he acts is just for show, like a magician. Egocentric: Obviously, he's full of himself. Plastic Man: Kind of like the "Magic Man" part. He's a fake, superficial person.
pasalaska Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 I really like this thread. Just sayin'. It's really interesting to see how people interpret certain lyrics, especily when their interpretations are WAY different to your own. I enjoy all y'all creative minds.
Rage & Love. Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 "Pressure cook and pick my brain and tell me I'm insane" - Nice Guys Finish Last Post your own and your explanations for them. realizing what your doing wrong, and keep telling yourself that what your doing is wrong, till you eventually give up. Green Days lyrics are deep, very, fucking, deep.. You can either get them straight away, or after a while, either way you can still connect with them.
Ellenkc Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 "Bringing on the fury The choir infantry Revolt against the honor to obey Overthrow the effigy The vast majority Burning down the foreman of control" and "Red alert is the color of panic Elevated to the point of static" "Red alert is the color of panic Elevated to the point of static" The USA has colour coded threat levels, so red alert would be panic time. When people are panicking, everything is dramatized and becomes so far from the actual truth, what you hear might as well be static noise. "Overthrow the effigy The vast majority Burning down the foreman of control" I can't think of a way to put the first verse into words so I'm skipping that. This verse is basically calling for the vast majority to overthrow/burn down/destroy the people that are controlling them.
Christina_Whatsername Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 7-11 is a name of a supermarket corporation in America, basically JOS is so bored in his crappy town and the only thing to do is to hang around and cause havoc at his local 7-11 thank you !!!!!!!!!
Guest Shangri-La Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 There are two definitions of the saying "dead skin on trial." One of them basically means to be anxious, or specifically to question decisions you've made in the past. The other definition is to argue with someone when you know it's not going to fix the problem.
Marki. Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 This thread is amazing! I'll finally be able to really understand some of the lines...
sara_gd Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 I'll have to read this thread in more depth and leave my own lyrics. There are lots, but lots of them I think are just because of english not being my first language. Great thread by the way Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone. Seriously, what the fuck? I always thought of that as "stone" being a metaphore of something that doesn't feel or do anything, that cannot forgive you. Not like a verb but as a noun.
Katarina. Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 I love this thread! Green Day music is great, and if you take the time to look more into the lyrics, you'll find out the songs are even more beautiful than the first time you heard them. It's really nice to read various interpretations of lyrics here.

Burnout98 Posted December 4, 2010 Posted December 4, 2010 Every Green Day lyric makes sense, you just have to think deeper about the lyrics and you will eventually find out what it means, or what it means for you. I think Billie Joe writes some lyrics that he wants people to have different interpretations on.
