green day is Posted November 30, 2010 Author Posted November 30, 2010 Billie should write a song like "I am the Walrus" and "Rape Me" that doesn't actually have a meaning. That would be cool.
St. Banana Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone. Seriously, what the fuck? I thought of it as mocking someone that is looking for forgiveness at a church or from god etc. Like comparing a lifeless object that doesn't respond/hear you/just an object..such as a stone..to this figure (god?) which is just an unresponsive object in people's minds. Basically saying asking for forgiveness is a waste of time, no one is listening? eh idk.

St. Banana Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 i thought salad days meant like, the best days. like a 40 year old mans salad days might be when he was 25 yrs old just out of college, having the best days of his life, in his prime. Im pretty sure thats what in means, just 'good days' in general. I think it's a common phrase, well my mum said so
St. Banana Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 From ! Viva la Gloria! : You made your bed in salad days amongst the ruins. Well I'm going with salad days meaning 'good days'. So with that, I think it means Gloria made the best of what she had and the situation she was in. Amongst the bad times (ruins) she didnt go in a downward spiral, she kept fighting. She has a far more positive spirit than Christian.
gdfan1 Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 This one has always confused me in basket case.... I went to a whore, HE said my life's a bore, so quit my whining cause its bringing HER down I looked it up in the lyrics book in Dookie and I am confused on if this whore is a man or a woman? Anyways just found that one interesting...
Hermione Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 This one has always confused me in basket case.... I went to a whore, HE said my life's a bore, so quit my whining cause its bringing HER down I looked it up in the lyrics book in Dookie and I am confused on if this whore is a man or a woman? Anyways just found that one interesting... There's a Dookie era interview where Billie was asked about that and he said he put in "he" and "her" because he didn't want it to be any particular gender. I've seen it interpreted as a hint at bisexuality, but I think it's more about not pigeonholing according to gender. Like a "gender doesn't matter so there's no reason to specify the gender" type of thing.

gdfan1 Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Hermione, I now know what interview you are talking about now... It's on my chrome dreams cd. Thanks for the answer dude! It was like one of those things where I knew that I knew it from somewhere but couldn't remember. Thanks for answering again!
Holly Ann Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 What is the problem with understanding this? To me it explains itself?! Well, you don't usually 'text' a postcard.
rfgz Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Well, you don't usually 'text' a postcard. Well, as you may see, I'm not a native speaker so I thought it was correct and easy to understand. In what context do you use 'text' then? Or the other way round: How would you say this sentence?
Ellenkc Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Oh I thought of one of these in the morning!!! I text a postcard sent to you interesting how he used the verb 'to text', but you don't text postcards, you mail them? Didn't Billie say the song was about how he'd be texting his wife and would sign off with "all my love" or something like that, which he wouldn't say in normal conversation in real life. I always figured it was that postcards are fairly short and a bit meaningless. They usually have something like "wish you were here" written in them, which is an overused phrase that people just throw in for the sake of it, like "all my love". Billie would be texting her a 'postcard'.

Holly Ann Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Well, as you may see, I'm not a native speaker so I thought it was correct and easy to understand. In what context do you use 'text' then? Or the other way round: How would you say this sentence? Oh. Well, we use the verb to text as sending someone a message on a phone. And you send postcards through the post, so to me it seems a little weird.
Maddy. Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I get the first part of it, but looking for forgiveness from a stone? idk if this is still relevant but i always thought the stone depicted something non sentient, non living. so the begging/looking for forgiveness would be in vain because the stone can't hear, understand and answer the person who is looking for said forgiveness.
Guest Shangri-La Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 So it's more like he's telling a pressure cooker to pick his brain and tell him he's insane.... Even more confusing. Sorry if somone's already responded but... pressure cooker = therapist "I text a postcard sent to you" what Billie what ?!?!?!?!!/!&/&/@/&// To text means to write. text n. a. The original words of something written or printed, as opposed to a paraphrase, translation, revision, or condensation. b. The words of a speech appearing in print.
Guest Shangri-La Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone. Seriously, what the fuck? I feel REALLY annoying posting 3 times in a row lol, but the meaning behind this is the liar is supposed to represent a dishonest person (specifically Bush) and the stone is him insincerely asking for forgiveness from his mistakes.
Lyz Z Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 In my experience, stones aren't all that forgiving.
Guest Shangri-La Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 ^exactly nobody is about to forgive 8 years of idiocy he's bestowed on the country.
green day is Posted December 2, 2010 Author Posted December 2, 2010 Sorry if somone's already responded but... pressure cooker = therapist I have never heard that before o.o You learn something new every day.... And a good thing, too, I was running out of time to learn something today‼
in_your_face Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 well, almost all. Most of the Green Day songs do not make sense to me.
Anja Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Oh I thought of one of these in the morning!!! I text a postcard sent to you interesting how he used the verb 'to text', but you don't text postcards, you mail them? I always thought it means to write something but not that I looked it up, it says "to send a sms" This one has always confused me in basket case.... I went to a whore, HE said my life's a bore, so quit my whining cause its bringing HER down I looked it up in the lyrics book in Dookie and I am confused on if this whore is a man or a woman? Anyways just found that one interesting... Pretty sure this has to do with the insanity theme (as someone already said) of the song. There was an interview a while ago where Billie said something like that. Maybe I can find it.

Armageddon Flame. Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 7-11 is a name of a supermarket corporation in America, basically JOS is so bored in his crappy town and the only thing to do is to hang around and cause havoc at his local 7-11
