ifmemoryserves Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I get the first part of it, but looking for forgiveness from a stone? Uh well I tried to explain that. He's trying to say that someone is either literally or figuratively trying to stone someone, but they're looking for forgiveness, or mercy, or pity, or whatever, even though they know they've done wrong.
green day is Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 Care to explain to me then? I always thought of it as "looking for forgiveness you aren't going to get".
Lyz Z Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Uh well I tried to explain that. He's trying to say that someone is either literally or figuratively trying to stone someone, but they're looking for forgiveness, or mercy, or pity, or whatever, even though they know they've done wrong. Fair enough, it's not like there's a set meaning for it. I just never got it.
21GunsOnHoliday Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 From ! Viva la Gloria! : You made your bed in salad days amongst the ruins. and She's smashing knuckles into winter. I just don't get it.
green day is Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 "Like a catastrophic baby." What? What song is this from??
pasalaska Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 What song is this from?? Christian's Inferno
Bohemian+Scandal Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Yay! I love all this deciphering of Green Day lyrics. Lyrics are no fun unless they have to be. From ! Viva la Gloria! : You made your bed in salad days amongst the ruins. and She's smashing knuckles into winter. I just don't get it. First line: Gloria chose to stay around messed up people and or in a messed up area. Salad days just means mixed up days. Second line: "She smashed her knuckles into winter" just means she tore right into it. Jumped head first into the suckiness. Winter is likely just a metaphor for darker times and or places.
Hanner Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 i thought salad days meant like, the best days. like a 40 year old mans salad days might be when he was 25 yrs old just out of college, having the best days of his life, in his prime.
Bohemian+Scandal Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I get the first part of it, but looking for forgiveness from a stone? The explanation of this line is in the lines before it. "Did you try to live on your own when you burnt down the house and home" - Christian of course destroyed his stability and or relationship with Gloria. He metaphorically burned it down. "Did you stand to close to the fire like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone" - This line is asking if he stood too close to the fire he created trying to destroy himself with it for retribution. This would make him a liar (Gloria's calling him one in general I think) looking for forgiveness by violently punishing himself. Stoning is an old method used to execute people. i thought salad days meant like, the best days. like a 40 year old mans salad days might be when he was 25 yrs old just out of college, having the best days of his life, in his prime. Like the first course of life. So then to revise Gloria spent her golden years in shit town basically.
BombingwithBillieJoe Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I get the first part of it, but looking for forgiveness from a stone? I kind of thought of it along the lines of the saying "you can't get blood from a stone". I'm not sure the original meaning of that saying, but my 17 year old mind has come up with my personal conclusion of how people pray to statues of Mary, Jesus, etc (I'm not well versed in different religions, and those two are first to spring to mind) but ultimately they're just praying to a stone who won't feel anything (ie, no blood) Then to me "looking for forgiveness from a stone?" is like praying to one of these religious statues, asking whomever you believe in to forgive you, but... it's just a stone/statue. Then Christian could A - either be taking that as having done his religious custom, and now feels forgiven, or B - he realizes it's pointless. I think Christian most likely would be leaning towards B, but... it's not like I know him or anything I'm not necessarily saying these are my beliefs or anything, and I'm not trying to take a stance against certain customs and beliefs. That's just what I interpretted it as. i thought salad days meant like, the best days. like a 40 year old mans salad days might be when he was 25 yrs old just out of college, having the best days of his life, in his prime. I never thought of it that way, but I love it

BombingwithBillieJoe Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 that's how I choose to interpret that lyric. And I've always thought it was point B. I think it's B too. Especially with the lyric "Your faith walks on broken glass" coming a little ways before that line.

MCC Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone. Seriously, what the fuck? I've always interpreted it as someone who was looking for forgiveness from a head stone. As in someone dies and then the liar becomes remorseful so they go to the cemetery to the persons head stone and ask for their forgiveness. Obviously, the dead person can no longer grant that forgiveness any longer.

Kayfabe Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Oh I thought of one of these in the morning!!! I text a postcard sent to you interesting how he used the verb 'to text', but you don't text postcards, you mail them?
forget_me_nots Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 For the "forgiveness from a stone" line, I always thought it was like, someone looking for forgiveness from a cold, hardened, heartless person who wasn't going to give it. Someone like a stone. Ha.
ParadoxAndPlaid Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 I've always interpreted it as someone who was looking for forgiveness from a head stone. As in someone dies and then the liar becomes remorseful so they go to the cemetery to the persons head stone and ask for their forgiveness. Obviously, the dead person can no longer grant that forgiveness any longer. I love this interpretation! I never thought of that! I always thought by stone they meant something like,"set in stone." like the person has made mistakes that cannot forget or leave behind. Either that or the act of being "stoned" like the biblical punishment. -the last one is a big stretch though- Oh I thought of one of these in the morning!!! I text a postcard sent to you interesting how he used the verb 'to text', but you don't text postcards, you mail them? Billie Joe no understand your modern technology!
euphoric-pareidolias Posted November 29, 2010 Posted November 29, 2010 Oh I thought of one of these in the morning!!!
