NOT. for the love of god.....

if an album is good, it WILL be somewhat of a concept in itself. i think the guys should just start writing music with no theme in mind (but maybe theyve been doing that all along...) and see what happens.

I don't think it will be a concept album, I'm pretty sure the band have said that a few times. I feel like another concept album would be overkill and that if they want to do another one, which I hope they will, they should do it later on in their career. I love concept albums do, so I'm going to really miss not being able to have characters and a story -vague or not - to read and interpret.

Really not bothered coz it's Green Day :D

If it's another concept album:

Whatever it is, I hope it's less anthemic and leaves out the "epic 5 minute power ballad with acoustic in the verses and loud electric chorus" thing they perfected with Boulevard of Broken Dreams but did too many times on the last two records.

Well, first of all, there are more "styles" of albums you can make than AI/21stCB and Dookie

Anyway, I don't really mind what they do, concept album or not. It's Green Day, so I trust that it will be great or at least good, and it seems as if they're at a (a, not the) creative peak right now, so I think it will be a very good album regardless of whether it's conceptual or not.

I think that they won't be going for a concept album like AI was. American Idiot really had a story. 21stCB is still a concept album, but the story is far less apparent and is very open to interpretation, and it's more of a concept as in that the entire album has a theme to it (with recurring characters), to me at least. Yes, there is a story, but it's way different from American Idiot.

Plus, I just want new lyrics and music straight from Billie, Mike, and Tré, not from characters or alter egos they've created. ((As awesome as those characters and alter egos may be! :)))

Funny that you say that, as Dookie (for example) also has a lot of characters in it, they're just not connected to make a story.

Continuing with what I was saying; it doesn't really matter to me whether it'll be a concept album or not. I would rather not have an album like American Idiot as in that it has such a clear story, because they've already done that. However, in American Idiot the songs also stand on their own.

And the music is a bigger factor than whether the album is a concept album or not. I would love a Dookie-sounding album, or an album sounding like any of their earlier stuff, really, I would also love something entirely new. Preferably not going down the road they're heading with 21stCB musically. 21st CB is a great album and I love it, but personally, I don't want another one with the same sound and, dare I say softness.

I'm kind of torn between "I love their old stuff I want MOAR" and curious to see what's next.

(woo quoting it twice. I have to things to say to this, but one didn't fit in with the rest of the post).

I think that the lyrics and music still comes from them, even if there are characters and alter egos. I think they are kind of a "safe way" to say things, because it's 'not actually them' who's saying it. To have the characters speak for them. Take Christian's Inferno, the most obvious example. I'm sure Billie's not feeling like that all the time, but it came from him. By creating Christian the character, that part of him is expressed, through something else.

I think it still comes straight to them when they use characters or alter egos.

EDIT: Well, I wrote a damn near fucking essay without even answering the actual questiong; what I think it's going to be, not what I want or what... well, whatever I tried to say here. idek.

I don't think it will be a concept album, but I do think that they're still going to use characters, but for single songs.

Didn't they say they pulled out a lot of stuff from Kerplunk? I think it's going to be a sort of hybrid, with music like from American Idiot, bt style like from Dookie. We can only hope right? :eyebrow:

Whatever it is, it's going to be marvoulous. Because it's Green Day.

I don't think they'll do another concept album. Pretty sure Billie(?) said this in an interview a while ago but I'm not entirely sure. Concerning the style they should definately go more back to their roots. I loved the news they were experimenting with some Kerplunk stuff months ago.

A mix of old and new stuff (only AI though...) would be pretty cool :) I'm so excited for the sound...

I think the concept albums were good because they were relevant for that time. The reason american idiot did so well was because it was written and released at a perfect time. I also think thats why 21CBD didn't do as well because it wasn't as relevant in '09 as it was in '05.

I think it'd be a smart choice if they went back to an album like Dookie or Warning, but thats just my opinion

well i hope they will use characters not only in the singles cause the last two albums which they wrote songs with characters were the best albums(American idiot and 21stCB) so i think the characters add a lot of action on the album

I can't imagine it being like their older stuff, it would just feel as though they were moving backwards as a band =/ My guess is that it will combine some of their older sound with the power and anthemic sound of the AI/21CB stuff, but with a new edge to it aswell. Possibly a concept album, possibly not. I don't really care, either way we'll get amazing music I'm sure

I really don't think it will be another concept album, I reckon they will still have songs that are in the style of ones of 21cb and AI, but I also think some of them will be more acoustic like warning. I also think they are looking back at their older stuff and using that as inspiration for new songs, but not re-making it, just using their knowledge to improve what they used to make, and making their sound more raw

I have no clue how they would make an album with all three of those things actually. I dont think I am making much sense

Never mind

I kinda doubt it'll be another concept album... Obviously I hope they go back to their "roots", but I'm pretty sure that'll never happen

Either way whatever it is, it's Green Day... It'll be amazing... :)

Billie Joe had said once that their new album is gonna be "back to the basics"... Sooo I think it will be more like Dookie or Insomniac *crossed fingers  *

I dont where some of you people are getting this, "going back to roots" quotes.

The only quote I remember was Billie, which I think he was kidding, saying the next album will be a Foxboro Hottubs influenced opera.

Once again, I think he was kidding.

i think it could be another concept album, but i'd much prefer it to be like dookie or kerplunk :)

I'd just like to say I don't want the new album to sound like any of their albums. If they try to remake Dookie/Kerplunk/Nimrod I'm jumping to another fandom, because that will sound horrific to me. I hope to fuck they'll continue to progress, not go back to where they started. If they want a more raw sound than AI/21cb then I'm all for it, but they can't just ditch everything they learned over the past decade and make a 90's album.

Idk it just bugs me I guess when people say they want the next album to sound like an album that they've already released. I get really tired of bands that release the same album over and over. Which is why I love Green Day, they tend not to do that.

I dunno I'm just ranting a bit...

I just hope it's not too polished, you know?

I don't really care. If it's Green Day, it's good.

I don't think it will be. They seem like a band that will want to try new things. Not get stuck in a box. But whatever they want to do I am sure will be great. I don't think they have ever done a poor album.

I wouldnt mind another concept album, but 3 in a row might be a bit repetative. I'd like something like Dookie or even warning, maybe just not as acoustic though. But hey, its Green Day, so matter what i know i'll love it.

i dont care... but I would love to listen simple songs with powerfull ideas... like all another simple cds... warning, nimrod, or something like insomniac....

I'm little bit tired of this story albuns, with characters, and reallity between the lines....it's wonderful of course, and very intelligent albuns, very planned... whatever.... but.. I miss the other style..... they are always growing up

This.

Although I'd prefer not to get another concept album...

onewhat is for sure, they have a really hard thing to do. i think the next album won't be concept again, but they really have to try to find something new in their music to be appreciated that much like with ai once again.

From the tidbits of information I've read about the new material, it doesn't seem like it will be conceptual. I don't think it will be like anything they've done before, though.
