Velocity Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Whats a godwin lol (yes im dumb) UrbanDictionary: godwin Verb Typically used on internet chat forums, to Godwin a thread or topic is to somehow make reference to Nazi Germany, or Nazis in general, which has the effect of derailing the thread and completely changing the intended subject.
dawn71 Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 You have a point. But I am not doing anti-cancer benefits and wishing people would die just because they made a computer. Maybe if they killed my cat or my mother. But a computer? Nope. Way. Over. Top. I never said that was the right thing for him to say. Haven't you ever been so pissed off and blurted out something really mean about someone when you were so full of rage at that person and you said it even though you really didn't mean it in the literal sense?
Mar Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I can't believe he said that about Steve jobs. I mean not liking him is one thing but saying you can't wait for him to die was a bit over the top. Even if Steve jobs did die the damage he has caused to the music industry is done, and if Steve jobs didn't destroy it someone else would have. The fact that he said dies of cancer was a bit tasteless too considering Billie just preformed at the stand up to cancer benifit gig over a month ago. I think this would fall into the catogory of Billie being very stupid and not thinking about what he was saying. Billie must have been really pissed off that day. Well said. I understand he has the right to be pissed, but that seemed a bit unnecessary.
GDM Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Lauren fell into the principle of Godwin's Law by invoking Hitler. lulz.
luvgirlcl Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I think it's dumb if he actually meant it. Remember John Lennon's "bigger than Jesus"? He wasn't freaking trying to insult every Christian. He was saying that he feels as if the Beatles are more popular. but everyone took him the wrong way, and burned Beatles albums and had riots and crap. Billie is simply saying he feels that we shouldn't let technology and politics get the best of us. He used their names because they're well known. Think about it, if you're talking shit about pop music, you'd say "Fuck Justin Bieber! That little motherfucker should die!". You wouldn't use some random person no one's heard of. I'm sorry, but how are you so sure that he named them, specially Jobs, to represent what he was angry about? I don't think that the root of this discussion is technology itself (we can all agree it has it's good and bad side), regardless of what our opinions are (we can all agree to disagree); but the fact that out of rage and strong feelings of that specific moment, Billie said something that's not right (I don't mean politically correct, btw), and I don't think it's right to wish death even to your worse enemy, it was a dumb move, even if he said it in the heat of the moment, that doesn't make it right. We all have fits of anger and rage and we say a bunch of stuff that we don't think about (and maybe even regret later), but that doesn't justify it. He's not perfect, and that's great. I prefer my musicians human and not picture perfect.
Lauren Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Lauren, I am 46 years old and have had Macs for about 20 years now. Please don't condescend to me like that, lol. I even said that I agreed with his take on computers, and disagreed with what Andres said about computers. So yes, I know. Didn't someone invent the Windows-based machine, too? Should I wish death on them from cancer, too? You don't have to interpret for me what Billie said. I have two Master degrees, and have written two thesis, I get it. Still doesn't make it right from the viewpoint of wishing that he'd die of the cancer that he's just overcome. Because so far, Jobs hasn't killed a bunch of people from his invention yet. Again, all I'm saying is that the rant is justified, just not the way he said it in that specific context to Jobs, particularly after just DOING AN ANTI-CANCER BENEFIT, lol. I'm sorry that you can't see that, but I just have a different opinion. I've had two macs and like 8 iPods ... It's not like I didn't say Apple wasn't good. I just said they have really good marketing. Yes, someone invented Windows. Billie chose Apple instead. He could've chosen windows. but Macs are what kids think are "cool". You shouldn't wish death on them. I mean if you want to, go ahead. I don't really care. but Billie didn't wish death on Jobs either. I'm not saying Jobs did anything wrong. Neither is Billie. Like I said, he's using him as a symbol. He represents technology.
GDM Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I never said that was the right thing for him to say. Haven't you ever been so pissed off and blurted out something really mean about someone when you were so full of rage at that person and you said it even though you really didn't mean it in the literal sense? DAwn, you are coming in way too late. I've already made one specific comparision a number of times tonight about an incident at the Montreal show. I've said a number of times that it wasn't right of me to say it, in the heat of the moment or ever, actually. I've had two macs and like 8 iPods ... It's not like I didn't say Apple wasn't good. I just said they have really good marketing. Yes, someone invented Windows. Billie chose Apple instead. He could've chosen windows. but Macs are what kids think are "cool". Lauren Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 First of all, that was a pretty dumbass thing of him to do. Second of all, it's not his value of whether its okay to hate someone or not, that he's contradicting. He's contradicting his value that he wants cancer not to exist or to be treateable. Third of all, even if he doesn't mean it, you don't think some people are going to take it that way? Everything you say is left up to perception. Am I offended? No. Do I think it was stupid and insensitive? Yes. The thing that really shocks me is that people think its okay for anyone (not just Billie) to stay stuff like this. Like I said, it's not like he thought this out and knew he was gonna say cancer. He just said it. People are just taking the "I hope Steve Jobs dies of fucking cancer!" part out of context. Listen to the whole thing. He doesn't continue on about how he hates Jobs. He says how we're ALIVE, but we should make sure we're LIVING. That's what makes me more sure he wasn't being literal when he was saying it. I mean, when people say "your mom" stuff, do you ever take them seriously? No, 'cause they don't go on a rant about your mom. They just say something once and move on. Lauren fell into the principle of Godwin's Law by invoking Hitler. sorry John... I was actually gonna use a terrorist's name but I didn't know how to spell any so I just said Hitler. haha. I never said that was the right thing for him to say. Haven't you ever been so pissed off and blurted out something really mean about someone when you were so full of rage at that person and you said it even though you really didn't mean it in the literal sense? I don't even think he was "in a rage". He does that at every concert... watch all the Static Age vids from 2009... he goes crazy in every single one. He's trying to get the audience pumped.
Velocity Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I've had two macs and like 8 iPods ... It's not like I didn't say Apple wasn't good. I just said they have really good marketing. Billie chose Jobs because his company created the iPod. A lot of people have credited that with the destruction of the "album", and subsequently the music industry. Billie probably resents him for that. Even during their interview about the iPad they said something to that effect.
Mar Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 He clearly knew that just saying "I hope Apple goes bankrupt and out of business" wouldn't be ~strong~ enough, he he had to make it personal. Whether he really means harm against Jobs, I don't know.
dawn71 Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I look at it this way shit happens and people get angry and say some really mean things but it doesn't mean we should take them so literally. Just like if I tell some one to go fuck off and die it doesn't mean I really want them to die. I'm not defending what Billie said but as I said people make mistakes and say things they don't really mean when they get angry. Billie is only human just like the rest of us. He is a fucking punk rocker not someone that is running for president. So I say get over it,enjoy the music and move on....
spark in the night Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Lauren, saying that you've had 8 ipods doesn't make Apple sound like a promising company

You know, people can agree with the entire statement and still disagree with one specific part. And it's pretty ironic that he wishes Jobs dead and wants everyone else to live. I don't think people are taking it out of context. I think people are saying it was a crappy thing to say. Haha, I don't know, if Jobs were a genocidist, then I probably could wish him a metaphorical death. But I use to write about genocide, I think I'll wish those who really need to die from cancer because of their evil a speedy death.
ifmemoryserves Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Lauren, saying that you've had 8 ipods doesn't make Apple sound like a promising company lol she always just brings them back to costco when she gets a tiny scratch. That's why

Lauren Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 DAwn, you are coming in way too late. I've already made one specific comparision a number of times tonight about an incident at the Montreal show. I've said a number of times that it wasn't right of me to say it, in the heat of the moment or ever, actually. "I can't wait until Steve Jobs dies of fucking cancer" is exactly what he said. I know that's what he said. but he doesn't truly wish that. How many times do teenagers tell their parents they hate them? they don't really hate them (hopefully), they just hate the fact they're not allowed to do something or got in trouble for something. Billie hates the fact technology is taking over our lives, and Steve Jobs is well known for technology. He could've easily said the inventor of Facebook, but I think people are more familiar with Steve Jobs's name. Your incident was heat of the moment, but hey, he probably deserved it. It's not like Billie was super freaking pissed over something. He always gets that energy at every show. he always says random crap.
GDM Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I'm not defending what Billie said but as I said people make mistakes and say things they don't really mean when they get angry. Yep.
Lauren Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 Lauren, saying that you've had 8 ipods doesn't make Apple sound like a promising company lol she always just brings them back to costco when she gets a tiny scratch. That's why 1. iPod Nano 2 gb, was stolen 2. iPod touch 16 gb... they upgraded it to a much better version in a month and it got $100 cheaper 3. iPod touch 32 gb, got a scratch (they were supposed to be scratch resistant!) 4. iPod touch 32 gb,ad a dead pixel when I bought it 5. iPod Classic 120 gb, wanted more space 6. iPod Touch 8 gb, still wanted a touch though ... ended up returning it 'cause I needed money for a laptop 7. iPod Classic 120 gb, I scratched the other one up pretty bad so I got a new one Okay, I had 7. My bad.

He always gets that energy at every show. he always says random crap. just because the guy deserved it, doesn't mean it was right on my part. I don't know, I just think that some people need to be wished death for their actions (murder, rape, pillage, genocide), etc. and not for making a computer. Sure it is doing crazy things to society, but just because Jobs would die of cancer doesn't mean that the computer would just cease to exist. And again, if Jobs hadn't just overcome cancer and could actually potentially die of it, and if BJ just hadn't done a telethon... ack. Seriously this means actually neither here nor there to me, truthfully, but I just think that people do have a point about the comments, pro and con. They and we need a vacation, lol. And I pity the Costa Rican audience member that brings a camera to the show, lol. My thoughts on most of the reactions in this thread: Ya'll be trippin. But the conversation be one of the best ever on da GDC! and wid that, I'm outey....
Lauren Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 I think an insult is only really bad as the other person feels about it. Steve Jobs probably doesn't give a fuck, and he probably won't even hear about this. Billie and Tre offended my shirt. I mean, I laughed, but I really was hurting. I wasn't gonna kill myself and I wasn't in tears, but it was still that shock factor sick feeling in my gut. but I got over it. but you know, Billie apologized to me and it was really sweet. He just wanted everyone to laugh. I would be okay if he didn't apologize. I know he didn't mean to hurt me. In this case, he wanted to show everyone how serious he was about how he feels about everyone living in the moment that he made a risk and said someone's name. I'm sure if Steve Jobs was there and approached him, he would tell him that he didn't mean it and was only using it to show how much he believed in this.
Marlee Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 i agree that everyone has their own opinion, and i completely believe in free-speech ...but to die of fucking cancer?....and if i remember right, he just performed on the Stand Up To Cancer telethon....hmm Plus his father dying of cancer
Lushotology Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 1. iPod Nano 2 gb, was stolen 2. iPod touch 16 gb... they upgraded it to a much better version in a month and it got $100 cheaper 3. iPod touch 32 gb, got a scratch (they were supposed to be scratch resistant!) 4. iPod touch 32 gb,ad a dead pixel when I bought it 5. iPod Classic 120 gb, wanted more space 6. iPod Touch 8 gb, still wanted a touch though ... ended up returning it 'cause I needed money for a laptop 7. iPod Classic 120 gb, I scratched the other one up pretty bad so I got a new one Okay, I had 7. dawn71 Posted October 29, 2010 Posted October 29, 2010 For pete's sake Billie's dad died of cancer so I really believe when Billie said that about Jobs he didn't mean it in the literal sense that some people seem to be taking it as. Billie would never disrespect his father like that. I mean come on people it was something said in anger and not meant to be taken so literally. Do you really think Billie Joe would disrespect his father like that? Just take it for what it's worth, words said in anger not meant to be taken so literally and blown out of proportion like they have been. Just get over it and move on. Billie is a truly a a good guy & would never actually mean that in the literal sense. Just listen to his music he use lots of metaphors to get a point across. That's just Billie, that's who he is & how he thinks. This has been way blown out of proportion and was never meant to be taken at face value. Out of all the crazy things that Billie has said and done over the years are people really going to single this one incident out and make it into something that it was never meant to be? That's just silly.
