Nele Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 yeah but, on your point about the timescale and "generation of teenagers", you could say the same about muse, who released absolution in 2003 and black holes in 2006, and are arguably as popular as they ever have been, and possibly even more so. Muse weren't popular here in 2003, 2006 nor are they today. In 2004/2005 and 2009 there were big GD posters in every CD store. They are still really popular, whether people like them or not, nearly every teenager knows who they are.
Mommy's Little Nightmare Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 The way I see this is that, I agree- they aren't as massive as they were, but that's just fine by me. I absolutely don't mind it, because in the eyes of their fans, they're still as big and mean as much to us as they ever did. They don't need to sell as many copies, or sell out venues like Milton Keynes two nights in a row to satisfy us. Or, me, at least. I'm perfectly content to be able to go to a show and see them. I don't care that it's sold out or not. What I care about is that I'll be seeing the boys. What I care about is listening to the albums. If I don't see them on tv every time I turn it on, that's not going to change how I feel about the band. So while, everyone and their mother, may not love a certain song off this album the way they loved Boulevard of Broken Dreams- I don't give a shit. The band has still won a Grammy for this album, American Idiot is being recognized as a great production. They're still getting the acclaim they deserve for what they do. And I'm content knowing that. American Idiot's success was always going to be hard to top, and the fact that this didn't sell as well isn't all that big of a shocker. Look at the difference in success between Dookie and Insomniac. It doesn't mean the band is going to retire, and it certainly doesn't mean the band is going to stop making the best music they possibly can. So to their fans, Green Day is as big and as great as they were then, still. Here we fucking go again... I get so sick of people using this forum to ask or say negative things about Green Day. This is supposed to be a fan site for those who love Green Day. As for your question I say no! Green Day has not lost popularity. There are several reason to blame for their record and concert sales. Number one is the internet, it is getting increasingly easier to download music for free. Also Green Day's label did a fucking shitty job of promoting it. As for concert seat sales, don't you realize that this world is going though a recession? So many people have lost their jobs and the economy is in the shitter! Trust me there are a lot of Green Day fan's out there that would give their right arm to be able to go to see Green Day live but just can't afford it. That's why I gave away quiet a few tickets to Green Day's concert in Dallas because a lot of people wanted to go but couldn't afford it & I didn't want them to miss the opportunity to see Green Day just because they had no money. Earlier this year Green Day won the 2010 Grammy Award for best rock album for 21st Century Breakdown so I don't know where in the hell you get the idea that Green Day has lost their popularity. Green Day is bigger than ever it's just unfortunate that it has to be during a time that the world is in a financial crisis. Besides Green Day isn't out there playing their music to see how popular they can get. They working their asses off to get their music out there for the whole world to hear. It's not about popularity or money with Green Day. It is now, always has been and will always be about the music to Green Day! Let me just say: I love you Dawn, and A-FUCKING-MEN!
pisquano Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Prime example would be the single East Jesus Nowhere. I believe with a better video that could have been HUGE. But it just seemed to slip under the radar, I mean I could count on one hand the number of times I saw that video on a music channel Stop saying that EJN would have been huge. It got a good airplay, peaking at #16 on the Mediabase Alternative Chart, followed the success of 21 Guns and was played at some TV shows. However, it has sold 53,000 digital copies, whereas LOTAG, which was released as the last single and half a year ago and peaked at #28 on the Mediabase Alternative Chart, has sold 55,000. Please, it wouldn't have been huge, for sure. Not saying it isn't a great song, because it is.
Tubbie Head Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 They sure are less popular than in AI era, and I like it better this way =D
Mommy's Little Nightmare Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 They sure are less popular than in AI era, and I like it better this way =D They're more accessible to their fans this way too... I know it WAS possible to meet them in the AI era, but not nearly as freely as people have been meeting them this time around.
†...HAUSHINKA...† Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Long story short, I think as a band Green Day have lost popularity but gained status. in a few words but basically right! Here we fucking go again... I get so sick of people using this forum to ask or say negative things about Green Day. This is supposed to be a fan site for those who love Green Day. I don't think that the question about the loss of popularity was linked to their change in music or as a criticabout them ...or better I didn't get it in this way...
solongfromthestars Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I second what Dawn said, that was pure genius.
whatsup? Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 In my eyes: NOT!! - and the rest doesn't matter.
Rage & Love. Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 I actually hope that their bandwagon fans fall off and die, so they can really narrow down their actual fans and make the best fuckin shit possible. even better shit*
BadgerLALA Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Who cares? Now are the teenies are gone and all the hardcore fans are left :eyebrow: No more: " OMG Billy Jo is damn hot" or "The bass player is ugly"
mandajane Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 who gives a fuck. i love this band no matter what. i dont care if theyre "popular" or whatever because that isnt what is important. i like them for their MUSIC...not their popularity....(and also because theyre super awsome funny chill guys too )
darenmay Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 yes, i think their popularity, compared to AI era, has lessened in the US, as well as here in philippines/asia. back in 2004-2005, green day was so popular here, like everyone knew WMUWSE, BOBD, and Holiday. they were really on the top of the charts. i think that didn't happen with 21stCB. but i can say that 04-06 were really the years for rock bands, it wasn't only green day who was huge. mcr and fob were popular also. and now that green day isn't that popular anymore, i dare say so as the other bands. look who are famous now.? so many other reasons for the lessened green day popularity, like lack of promotions, singles, album songs, etc., etc. but yeah there's already a thread for it.. it has been discussed already.
unexplainedbacon Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 In the beginning their was no awesomness, then one day...God said... LET THEIR BE GREEN DAY!!! ....AND EVERYTHING WAS FECKING AWESOME.....AND GREEN DAY WROTE AMAZING MUSIC FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES...AND THEIR TRUE FANS NEVER GAVE A MONKEY'S NOOB ABOUT HOW 'POPULAR' THEY WERE......AJSHAJHVAJHVAJFVJHV....ok, I'll stop now.. :eyebrow: ..I HAVE CAPS LOCK AND IM NOT AFRAID TO USE IT!!!!
mandajane Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 but i can say that 04-06 were really the years for rock bands, it wasn't only green day who was huge. mcr and fob were popular also. im sorry, but fob doesnt count as a band.
mandajane Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Hahaha Fall out Boy and My Chemical Romance should not count! THEY DONT
luvgirlcl Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Who cares? Now are the teenies are gone and all the hardcore fans are left :eyebrow: No more: " OMG Billy Jo is damn hot" or "The bass player is ugly" Word. Although, I think we have to look at the bigger picture. Maybe THIS album didn't make as much sound (media and social wise) like AI did, which honestly it would have been nearly impossible to top, but what the band is (as of today) isn't entirely owned to what AI meant, it's the weight of 20 years as a band and making great music, so they have made their mark in music, which of course doesn't mean that they don't have anything else to go on for, but they have already established themselves as great musicians, with substance and depth while having fun. Regarldess if 21CB didn't sell as much as AI or they aren't on TV as much as in 2004-2005, it doesn't mean that they aren't as relevant, people still know who they are and about their music (current and older), and the impact they've made in the industry is done, and they will only keep on going and going.

netty Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 personally I couldnt give a stuff how many albums they sell or how big the gigs are just as long as I still enjoy the music. thats the reason I like them, not because of how popular they are.
mechanicalman Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 No one likes guitars and stuff any more.
fadi_7 Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 i don't know about that but i heard billie joe and mike saying that they write music for them self and the people that would love to listen to them it will be very cool and people won't know the band if they don't listen to rock or stuff like that that's what i think but.....
Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 21st Century Breakdown just isn't as good as American Idiot, maybe some of the people went to see them live when that era was on didn't want to go and see them in the last year or so because they thought it would be mainly new songs. That doesn't make them "fake fans". It comes down to the quality of the music as much as the shifts and cycles of the music business. Going by some comments, you'd think good music was never made alongside shit disposable mainstream music. Then there's the original die hard fans who might not have liked the new direction of American Idiot, but put up with it in the hope that they'd return to the original sound by the next record. Then when they didn't with the follow up, these people just weren't interested in the band continuing the American Idiot formula. Also guitar music is in a bit of a poor state atm, there's basically been no good new bands for a while. I love them to death but Green Day have "influenced" a lot of reeeally shit bands. 30 Seconds To Mars, Paramore, Fall Out Boy (save Sugar We're Going Down) All Time Low, New Found Glory, Kids In Glass Houses, You Me At Six, I could go on but all these Kerrang bands are utter gash, have literally nothing to separate them from one another (except Paramore whose only plus is a hot female singer really :eyebrow:) , will never make a record that is near comparable to even Green Day's weakest.
Beathe. Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 oh, come on. Yes they were huge in the AI era. Yes they are still huge. Not as huge, because all the shitty fans have been weeded out. Does it even matter, though? They're awesome, always have been, always will be and WE all know that. Who cares about anyone else? This
Rosie May Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 In 2005 there was loads of people I knew that liked Green day and a good few that considered themselves "fans." By 2006 there was barely anyone that seemed to like tham anymore, and when they came back it didn't make that much of an impact. But AI was huge there lucky that they've ever that kind of success I think. And whether their popular or not their music is still amazing so it doens't really matter.
ampisthename Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 posted this in IC, but they're all fucking slow and mainly mentally deficient, so time to post it here haha At least were not too mentally deficient to recognize the real fan club, asshole. They've gotten less popular because jerks like you listen to them. People probably don't take you seriously when you talk about your favorite band because you seem to be overly dramatic. And we're slow at responding to a thread thats slamming our boys because we appreciate what they do for their fans.
