Well, that's just what happened. MTV, radio and popular demand didn't like 21CB as much as other stuff that came out during the time. Plain and simple. On the other hand, while there were less "ZOMG BILLYJOE" teenie fans that like Green Day, they still managed to pull off a huge tour with locations that they have never been to before/ in a long time.

Sure, Green Day has lost some radio appeal, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. If less people like 21CB compared to AI, then fine. That's their loss, and it makes the relationship between true Green Day fans more special.

Less people crowding the barricade, more Green Day for me. How can I lose?

^ I agree

They definitely aren't as popular as they were in the AI era, but that's only because a lot of their AI stuff was on the radio, so we had all of the "fake" fans, because they were considered "popular and cool" in that era.

I haven't heard a lot of the 21CB singles on the radio as much as I heard stuff from AI, so the real fans stayed true, while the fake fans just follow whatever is popular at the moment.

All I have to say to you, Linds, is LOL FAIL! <3

Now, my real post:

Yes, they probably aren't as popular as they were back in the AI era, but the publicizing (sp?) for 21st Century Breakdown wasn't all that great. Also, the American Idiot album was a louder, more aggressive sound than 21CB which was "cool", I guess.

Oh shush Lizzie hahaha.

No one will ever know. :ninja:

They are not mainstream "pop culture" like they were in around 04-06, but no with me and with any real fan they are just as popular. If anything, Green Day are even bigger now than they were during American Idiot.

If you judge popularity by fans, the 21st Century Breakdown tour has been their most successful and biggest yet. If you judge it by music, 21st Century Breakdown as an album has been highly rated, and compared to works by Bruce Springsteen, The Clash and Queen, all rock legends.

I suppose they're not as middle-of-the-spotlight "OMGZ ITS GREENDAY@!!!!" as they were in '04-'06, no, but they're still pretty damn big. They haven't had any massive hits, but a lot of people know them and know a song or two from 21stCB. Like Stephen said, this tour has been their biggest to date, 21stCB got high ratings. And now they also have the musical, which sparked interest in them in a different part of society (I don't mean that in a demeaning way, but I'm sure there are people who really wouldn't listen to "that kind of music" and are more into musical or other kinds of music, whose interest is sparked by the musical)

They're not as hyperpopular in the mainstream as they were in '05, but I would say they're still as popular, just in a less 'in-your-face' way. More on the side of the spotlight.

Well they're definitely not as popular with the masses, the people that don't really care about them anyway. When I first got into Green Day in 2005 I was twelve and about ten kids from my year went to see them at Milton Keynes. I was absolutely gutted because my parents wouldn't let me go yet all these kids who barely knew who Green Day were went. A few weeks later and they had all stopped listening to Green Day, most of them started listening to their chavvy dance shite. The band were just popular with that kind of culture back then, I reckon one of the reasons that hasn't happened with 21CB is that the advertising has been absolutely shite and it feels like the music just hasn't been put out there.

It doesn't matter anyway, they're still absolutely massive and it doesn't matter how popular they are to me, as long as they're bringing out amazing music and putting on awesome shows thats all that matters.

Yes they did lose popularity, but I think it's a good thing. It makes us true fans stick out more I think. I used to hate it during AI era, I'd ask friends what their favorite Green Day song was, and they'd say Holiday, or BOBD, AI, WMUWSE. Then I would say my favorite song is She. Then they say something like "I didn't see that on American Idiot album?" It's like American Idiot was their only album. That bothered me. As far as this so called "music" nowadays thats played on the radio, I can't stand it at all. Rap has taken over, but I'm not sure how that managed to get through when these people aren't even singing. They are just talking, and when they try to sing, they need their voices auto-tuned. That being said, I like where Green Day is at right now, playing large venues across the world, little tv and radio airtime.

They still manage to sell out stadiums because they still make awsome music and kick ass.

We're better off without the 'fans' with short attention spans who flock to whatever is considered cool at the time anyway.

Posted

I think they are as popular as they were in 2005. Stadium gigs have shown it.

21st Century Breakdown isn't as popular as American Idiot.

That's different. If people remember them for American Idiot, it's still being popular.

I think they are just as popular as before. Ov American idiot was a huge era for them and 21cb album wasn't as popular as AI but whatever popularity they "lost" they regained during all the tours this year. Their last album may not have reached the same level of popularity as AI but they're human and they are still true and loyal to all their fans and what's important is that they are still making music and performing concerts- their popularity level doesn't matter as long as true fans stay supporting them which we all will.

I think popularity and good music are two completly different things. So it shouldn't really matter.

Posted

They've kinda lost popularity, but not majorly. I actually think 21st Century Breakdown as an album lost popularity, and not the band. This said, at the time the album was release, there was quite a bit of hype about KYE and 21 Guns, but now if you mention EJN or LOTAG to people, who don't actually own or have listened to the album, wouldn't know what it is.

And they probably still sell out stadiums for their previous works in music. And their high live reputation.

^I hope that made sense^

i think also in a way, pop punk can be such a transitionary genre for people; i speak to many fans of indie music like the arcade fire and elliott smith who describe a time when they were younger and they only listened to green day, simple plan, new found glory etc. i have to say, i did make that journey, but as we all know, green day are a fucking cut above all those bands ;)

Posted

Long story short, I think as a band Green Day have lost popularity but gained status.

Posted

I don't really mind how popular they are. Sure, they've lost popularity since AI. But 21st Century Breakdown wasn't going to beat that, was it?

I don't care how popular they are. They always have a place in my heart.

shit that was corny

That's what happens when you don't bother to pick decent singles or promote them properly ;) . They went the boring and safe route with their singles and abandoned promotion of the album in favour of the musical when the album had only been out about 5 or 6 months. The result is a wasted album and a wasted chance to make an impact with some amazing songs.

Lets pray they do not make that same mistake next album

Oh yes :D. I mean, we've all still been able to enjoy the album to the fullest, the singles and how popular they are doesn't affect that at all. I just feel like the band deserved better, they made an amazing album and deserved for it to make an impact.........but then again it was up to them what they did with it so seems like they're happy with how it's gone. But I'm not happy , for the sake of good music! Wasting an important album that could've made an impact is a crime.

Back in 2004, they were protesting against the Goverment by writing music. That was something that everyone wanted (and still wants) to do, but no

one was brave enough. Only they were, and with American Idiot they said a big fuck you to Bush and his "dogs". People loved that move and that's

how they became popular (also, hot men wearing eyeliner seemed pretty "back in 80s" and eccentric at the same time, and young people love eccentric things and girls love glam rockers). In 2009, they had nothing to protest against (Bush isn't a president, Obama is and Billie Joe had supported him) and the only thing they changed was haircut and clothes... The critics said that with 21st Century Breakdown they wanted to make a new American Idiot but they didn't succeed and the promotion wasn't successful enough... Add the economical crisis in all this and you can see why Green Day have lost popularity...

Prime example would be the single East Jesus Nowhere. I believe with a better video that could have been HUGE. But it just seemed to slip under the radar, I mean I could count on one hand the number of times I saw that video on a music channel =/

It doesnt really bother me how big they are or not. Yeah, they definitely arent AS popular, but they're still pretty popular. Everyone knows them anyway, that I've talked to

yeah but, on your point about the timescale and "generation of teenagers", you could say the same about muse, who released absolution in 2003 and black holes in 2006, and are arguably as popular as they ever have been, and possibly even more so.

I believe some of Muse's popularity to be as a direct consequence of being part of the Twilight franchise. No, really, I was the only one who recognized Super Massive Black Hole in the first film, and now one of my friends "really likes them"... and she'd never heard of them before it.

Here we fucking go again... I get so sick of people using this forum to ask or say negative things about

Green Day. This is supposed to be a fan site for those who love Green Day. As for your question I

say no! Green Day has not lost popularity. There are several reason to blame for their record and

concert sales. Number one is the internet, it is getting increasingly easier to download music for free.

Also Green Day's label did a fucking shitty job of promoting it. As for concert seat sales, don't you

realize that this world is going though a recession? So many people have lost their jobs and

the economy is in the shitter! Trust me there are a lot of Green Day fan's out there that would give

their right arm to be able to go to see Green Day live but just can't afford it. That's why I gave away

quiet a few tickets to Green Day's concert in Dallas because a lot of people wanted to go but couldn't

afford it & I didn't want them to miss the opportunity to see Green Day just because they had no money.

Earlier this year Green Day won the 2010 Grammy Award for best rock album for 21st Century

Breakdown so I don't know where in the hell you get the idea that Green Day has lost their popularity.

Green Day is bigger than ever it's just unfortunate that it has to be during a time that the world is in a

financial crisis. Besides Green Day isn't out there playing their music to see how popular they can get.

They working their asses off to get their music out there for the whole world to hear. It's not about

popularity or money with Green Day. It is now, always has been and will always be about the music to

Green Day!
