koolkev Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Definitly the Kerplunk version. A little better on the drums, and more rough-sounding.(I like that)
Sarabeth Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 WTP was the third Green Day song I ever heard, and it was the Dookie version. That was a little over a year ago. I just heard the Kerplunk version for the first time a few minutes ago, and I like it way better. I love the raw sound.
Marki. Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Kerplunk version. I can't really explain why, I just love the whole album very, very much and that stops me from saying Dookie
JuliaX_Ray2020 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 kerplunk version.. 'cause.. hm I think just because the feelings about this time which the song is about
*american idiot* Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I love both, but I must say Kerplunk's better. It's just... y'know, cooler
OverjoyedAndroid Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I like the Kerplunk version better. I like how Billie Joe doesn't hit a higher note when he sings "some call it slums, some call it nice" The high note in the Dookie version messes it up for me >.<
green day is Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 The Dookie Demos version. Because I not only love the raw sound, but also the fact that I fucking love listening to demos. If it was probable, I would get a job at Reprise and sneak all their demos ever onto a flash drive and just keep them forever. Also I love how you can hear Mike's "Aaaaahhhh"s during the chorus really, really well which I love. By the way, has anyone noticed that this thread is full of people saying the same things over and over? It's either "Dookie, it sounds more clean and polished" or "Kerplunk, I like the raw sound" with little variation.
Prosthetic Brain Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 First off, I want to say that Welcome to Paradise is my favorite song (along with Hitchin' a Ride) ...and overall, I like the Kerplunk! version better. I like the raw sound, and I like how prominent the sound of the base is. It really sticks out. Also, I like how they sing the chorus in this one. It's a slight difference, but I like it. However, I like the instrumental bridge in Dookie, better. It sounds a bit more organized and "epic" so to say.
yourmumgoestocollege Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 I love the shitty sound of pure music therefore kerplunk.
haushinka reject Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Dookie. It was the first version I heard. So, I was used to that plus I just think it sounds better. Exactly my thoughts as well. Dookie was the first Green Day album I bought so for me it's obvious.
Clockwise Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I prefer the Dookie version because I actually think Billie seems more passionate in it.
Viva_La_Revolution! Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Dookie. Maybe its bcuz i heard it 1st tho?
LauraG Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 The Dookie version for sure! Mainly because of the quality, but also 'cause they sound much more tight.
Annie, get your gun Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I like more the version of Dookie, is more refined to me.
Danger! Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 I like the Dookie version better, its not as rusty as Kerplunk!
Monica. Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I do love both of them, but I'd prefer the Dookie version, just sounds better
WestboundSign! Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I prefer Kerplunk version.. and I don't really know why.
BrickOfSelfControl1995 Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I'm on the fence. I love the raw, gritty sound of the Kerplunk version but I also love the cleaner and tighter sound on the Dookie version. Also when Billie and Mike do the harmony on "some call it slums some call it nice" both of them are singing slightly higher notes in the Dookie version so that's another difference. Idk, I love both so I don't really care
oscar is a nimrod Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Bloody hell what is wrong with you people? Kerplunk version >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Dookie version That rough sound, the little mistakes........it's just absolutely perfect for a song about moving into a squat as a teenager. It captures the feeling of the lyrics. "Cleaness" and "clearness" shouldn't have anything to do with this song, the essence of it is lost with the Dookie version. AND the Kerplunk version has those cool spooky noises in the middle. It's quirky and rough and ready and I love it This!!!!! I love both versions but the kerplunk version makes me feel more connection with the band. Me and my band went to an absolutely shitty place for our first gig,It was a village fete in cheddar (the birth place of the famous cheddar cheese, come over and view our beautiful gorge and pure British countryside!) the crowd consisted of about 15 elderly people, the rest of my bands family, my girlfriend and my girlfriends friend. ALL OF WHICH GASPED IN HORROR WHEN WE PLAYED "KNOWLEDGE" (we have not practiced our songs enough yet to play live) as i belted out at the top of my voice, "IT'S LOOKING FUCKING NARROW!" Somehow the sound of kerplunk and 39 smooth both make me feel like they were the same as us once and maybe we could be as good as them one day.....

Sounds like the perfect choice of song for a first gig, I bet that was loads of fun! That's really what make those first two albums so special, you can't improve on the songs by polishing them because the unpolished way they were made at the time is what makes them great, they capture that time. All their albums are special for different reasons but that's what does it for those two.
