I know some people prefer the "raw" sound of the earlier stuff. Just never been my preference.

I don't generally prefer the sound of their earlier stuff. But for this particular song I do. It's not only an old song but a song specifically about being a teenager living in rough and ready surroundings - so that old raw sound is SO much more appropriate for the song.

Nothing to do with preferring the rawer old sound or the clearer new sound, it's just what fits for the individual song. Which in this case is the fabulous original and authentic version :D

I much prefer the sound of the Dookie version, but only because I had been listening to it for 3 years before I heard the Kerplunk version so it was hard to equally appreciate something of a less polished sound.

I like the dookie version because Its after Longview so it goes with the whole "Take me away to paradise" thing.

AND

it's right before pulling teeth. :eyebrow:

Arg! Hard one! I can never decide which one I like better...at the moment, as usually, I like the Kerplunk better :)

Dookie :)

The guitar riff just comes out so much more pronounced on the Dookie version.

Not to mention, Tre changes up his fills in the Dookie version, and they are even better than the kerplunk ones!

kerplunk !

Kerplunk version...i like to hear it raw like at a show...always better for me.

I just think that the Dookie version is better because it sounds a bit better because the sounds come out cleaner other than the Kerplunk! version

But i still think the Kerplunk! version is great too!!

I prefer the Kerplunk! version.

Yes, I am indeed one of those people who like the 'raw' sound. But, that's not the main reason I prefer the Kerplunk! version. Some of my main reasons are; It seems so much more upbeat. It's like, when they re-recorded it for dookie, they slowed it down a bit. I don't know. Also, you hear the drums more. I don't think you hear the drums enough in the dookie version. Also, Billie Joe's voice in the dookie one sounds sad and bored, but in the Kerplunk! one, it just sounds so much more adventurous and, as stated before, upbeat.

Don't get me wrong, I love the dookie version as much as the next guy, but when compared to the Kerplunk! version, it just seems a little lacking, in my opinion.

Am I crazy, or was there a Kerplunk version that had the track starting out with Mike's bass interlude? I seem to remember hearing it a lot way back when and I can't find it now. Maybe I'm crazy

Sounds a tad bit better on Dookie, for reasons most of you have already said; it has more attitude, it's more aggressive, which I prefer with this song. Always best live though. :pinch:

agree with this exactly

Dookie version. I've always preferred this version over the Kerplunk one.

I like the Kerplunk version better. I do like that it sounds more raw, and I like the vocals better.

Ha! All the more reason to skip it :eyebrow:

I do enjoy the double paradise thing though . That's the only plus of the Dookie version.

Dookie.

For some reason, I always found the distortion to be more muffled on the Kerplunk! version.

Like some one's put a bag over the amps.

Plus, that's the first version I heard.

I love both, but I prefer the Dookie version. The vocal harmonies are just better, imo.

The Dookie version but I still like the Keplunk

i like the version at kerplunk better because its rougher and mike's bass sounds a bit better than the "cleaner" version at dookie
