Too bad the song isn't called Shitty Sex.

I just imagined myself requesting this song and holding up a sign that says "I want 'Shitty Sex'". Now that'd be something!

Just for give an information, Gilman was founded in the year 1986.

I always think that "theres no return to 86" means "theres no return to the begining" or "theres no return to the roots"

I never thought of this. Interesting point, even though I don't think it has to do with this.

and before anyone says 'OMG IT SAYS BILLIE OMG' note that this is from 1991.

I like that Mike gets into all shows for free. :D (Well, if it's our Mike D., but let's pretend it is. )

Oh and now I wonder who that other Billie is.

Yeah, that is a coincidence, since Green Day did some Kerplunk shows there, too. I would've liked to see the updated list after the Green Day incident...

Anyways, it's fact that it was made solely about being kicked out of Gilman (however, now I know that he literally meant the 86 list). I was just throwing out the possibility of a double meaning. And wasn't Dave E.C. one of Green Day's drummers, by the way?

I can't stop laughing.

I remember I always thought it said "no return from 80s sex" but noo...

Yeah I don't think it was about one night stands, I remember in this interview billie said it was about getting kicked out of gilman.

"so stand aside and let the next one pass" might refer as them kicking them out and letting other bands take their place. :)

 off you go!

I always thought the words were "There's no return from many things" but then again, I bought Warning before Insomniac and that particular version of Warning had 86 live from Prague at the very end...I couldn't hear what he was singing and my 14 year old self was too dumb to look it up. I thought it sounded like "many things" so I was singing that for ages before I copped on.

I have heard a rumor about that before that 86 refers to Billie having one night stands with

random girls and that once he had sex with them he didn't want anything else to do with them.

That once he had a one night stand with a girl that had no respect for herself(a groupie) he

would consider them 86'ed. Kind of like being 86'ed out of his bed & his life.

But I take this for what it is, a RUMOR and nothing more.

Actually the first time I heard it I thought he said something like "There's no return from having sex" (Not only for the first time I heard it, for a quite while) lol

I know I should never trust a site that anyone can post on, like SongFacts.com, but there's an interesting theory about the song's writing. We all know the real meaning, about Green Day and the underground scene at the time, but someone suggested that it also referred to one-night stands that Billie Joe had (he states an interview, but I'm not too sure about that). Lyrically, it still relatively makes sense, but the one thing that really stands out to me is that when listened to a certain way, "86" turns into "any sex." I don't know, this is really out-there.

If anything, I'd say "There's no return from 80's sex."

:whistle

Don't forget that quote from him. I think he said something to the extent of "I have never been with a groupie in my entire life."

I've never heard about this story...but I prefer the old one about the song cause^^

I saw it somewhere online about the bands song's meanings. but they give like 1 to 3

different possible meanings for each song. I saw it a while back and I wouldn't

put much stock into it though. I still believe it was about the whole Gillman St

fiasco.

Gee, Im so naive, I always thought it was about being exiled from Gilman Street. For his sake I hope hes never fucked fans. Were an ugly bunch.

You read some dodgy stuff on those song facts sites, never anything to back it up though. Same with this, never seen anything to back up this rumour, but I have heard him say numerous times it's about Gil man. Might have started online back in the really early days and just stuck around.

... Yeah I had to space Gil man because iPod kept trying to change it.

Posted

To clarify again, the OFFICIAL meaning of the song is refering to Billie being kicked out of Gilman, so please try not to bring it up again, as it's common knowledge by now.

yes, I think is the correct version...

Posted

ahahaha no...

to be 86'd is to be kicked out or banned for life. Gilman St had an '86 list' of people that were banned from the club for life, just like Green Day are banned because they are signed to a major label.

So 'there's no return from 86' is basically saying 'there's no returning to Gilman st'

If you have a look at the Gilman St book that was released about 5 or 6 years back you can see photos of an old 86 list.

"The rules is the rules."

Who the hell comes up with these theories on song fact websites?

Posted

I read that somewhere once on some fansite (I'm fairly sure it wasn't GDA)but I've heard everywhere else that it's about Gilman which makes more sense and I've never seen/heard the interview where the quote is from so it's say it's probably just a rumour.

So why does it only include Billie and not Mike and Tre? Just curious as to why he stands alone

Posted

86'd list is pretty curious, cause says that certain people can't play in the place, not about bands

so, how the hell Billie Joe can play on Gilman with Pinhead Gunpowder?

Posted

I think that Billie can still play with Pinhead Gunpowder there because they are not on a major label.

Yeah, no chance to be taken off of the 86 list, no return to Gilman Street.

Lol at that scan, "Tall Tim" And "Mike D" get to go to the shows for free. Interesting..

correct :)

Billie Mike and Tre go to Gilman every now and then I hear to go watch Emily's Army.

Green Day are banned from playing there, but the members of Green Day are not banned from entering the venue or playing in different non-major-label bands

there's actually a photo of Billie from the most recent Pinhead gig on the wall in the foyer area of Gilman, and one of the roof rafters inside the venure has 'sweet children' written on it.

Posted

Well 'Sweet Children' technically never made it to the major label, so I don't see why they would feel the need to paint it over since that name remained unsigned.

Posted

We all know Billie Joe was a womanizing one-night-stand kind of guy in his early years.

/sarcasm

I've noticed that I don't really pay attention to the lyrics that much in the early stuff.

Do their early stuff mean nothing to you!?!

lol.

uhm i dont think 86 is about some one night stand, Billie isn't that much of a whore.

I think they left it as a nice photo op for passing Green Day fans.

bloody tourists
