I love that interview. That is one of the few interviewers that dealt with the band well back in the day. It is a pretty amazing coincidence!

But I have a feeling they just said that jokingly to reference/parody to "Tommy" -The Who's rock opera-

But I would not be surprised if Billie had watched this interview later on and was inspired to name his character based on it. But I had no doubt they always wanted to make some sort of rock opera.

That interview is so hilarious. I'm pretty sure I heard an interview with Billie from after AI where he refers to it too. I remember him saying "We joked about doing a rock opera in an interview before Dookie came out and I was sitting there eating a burger the whole interview." (Or something along those lines.) Don't really remember where that was from. But I sware I've heard him mention it in recent ones.

Yeah, I know what interview you're referring to. If I recall it right, he said that together with that he didn't remember that, but that he recently found that interview/someone showed it to them.

And can I just say that it's adorable how Mike says "it's got good stuff on it for everyone, except parents".
