I'm a HUGE Green Day fan, but...pre-American Idiot Green Day > post-American Idiot Green Day

I've been a fan since 2001, which is sort of post Warning-IS era but I don't really categorise fans because they have started liking the band during a particular era. It's all the same to me.

When I was queueing up to see LTJ in Birmingham the other week, this guy saw my Green Day hoodie and said "What's your favourite album?" I said 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and he was like "Oh my God, that's amazing!" and he was so shocked that he high fived me. I was like "You thought I was going to say American Idiot, didn't you?" and he just said "Yeah, I actually did." I got the feeling that he would have been disappointed if I had mentioned any album after Dookie because his favourite was Kerplunk.

It's obvious that some albums resonate more with some people, and it's also because of what album you identify more with, given the set of songs from the particular album. But at the end of the day, no matter what album we're talking about, the point is that the essence of what Green Day is, musically and lyrically, it's there in every single song. It's not like they turned into Katy Perry or something....the topics may change, which inevitable (it would be waaaaay too creepy for them to keep on writing about masturbation and whatnot) as you get older and your priorities change from having fun and doing nothing all day long to taking care of your family and kids.

They still mantain their tight way of playing, the energy, the emotion, the honesty, and the fact that Billie somehow gets to reflect in a set of lyrics what many of us are feeling...

And personally....can't choose one album. It usually depends on how I'm feeling.
