Vespertine Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Hm, of course people are going to listen to their older stuff more than their newer. I mean, they released six studio albums before American Idiot and only one after it. So most of their songs are the old ones. I love all their stuff, so I don't know what to say really. Sometimes I think I prefer their new songs. But then again, the old ones are so amazing... so it's hard to choose. Oh and I love 21CB. I think people should stop comparing it to American Idiot and just analyze the album for what it is. Yeah, AI and 21CB are similar, but they're not the same.
Satan Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 I get that, definitely, but maybe I dislike it all so much because I don't really like the idea of characters in general. I can get around it in AI because they're following a nice, cohesive storyline, but in 21CB it's like Christian and Gloria were just kind of thrown in there. I would prefer the album so much more without the introduction of more characters that don't seem to serve much of a purpose. Like in Viva La Gloria or Christian's Inferno, for example. I feel like these are just random people who don't really have a function. I mean, I get the same vibe from AI at times, but I mean the "Jesus of Suburbia" serves as a much better symbol than some chick name Gloria. Jesus of Suburbia seems to represent a large group of people; the children of broken homes, the druggies, the outcasts, those just merely living in today's society. Gloria represents chicks. I know that's not completely true, but that's how I feel when I'm listening to it. She's the last of the American girls, she has a boyfriend, she's crazy, whatever. I just don't get nearly as much meaning out of it. I feel the same way about Christian, too. He doesn't seem nearly as representational as Jesus of Suburbia or St. Jimmy or Whatsername. I can't pinpoint an exact reason for that off the top of my head, but I just don't see Christian and Gloria as symbols for anything pertaining to my life. That's probably why I don't like it nearly as much. In addition to not enjoying the general, overproduced sound of the album, I also don't listen to the lyrics and think "wow, I totally get what he's saying." Again, this is all strictly my opinion. I'm not going to sit here and blindly say "Oh everything is great, Green Day can do no wrong, blah blah blah" because I'm just not that much of a fan. They're one of my favorite bands, but that doesn't mean I'm going to like everything they do. Know Your Enemy was the start of a downward spiral into not loving everything Green Day does. interesting A lot of lyrics in 21stCB were weak "This diabolic state is gracing my existence Like a catasrophic baby Maybe you're the chemical reaction I am the atom bomb I am the chosen one" for example. but i feel that some of their best lyrics were part of 21stCB "My beating heart belongs to you I walked for miles til I found you I'm here to honor you If I lose everything in the fire I'm sending all my love to you." AI did have amazing lyrics, but i feel that i can't compare them to 12stCB. They are very different styles. Neither is better. i feel that 21st CB is an album that deals with matters that are bigger than us. Things that you can't relate to in your own life, but world issues (like in 21 guns they talk about war) and that's what I love about Christian and Gloria. They keep it ... well relate able for me. For example, in 21 guns, it talks about war, but at the same time it's about a fight between Christian and Gloria (and how they make up "lay down your arms give up the fight") i feel that you actually get a pretty good idea of the characters to be honest, especially in songs like - viva la Gloria, viva la Gloria (little girl), last of the american girls, Christian's inferno, last night on earth, horseshoes and handgrenades ect. overproduced: it is overproduced, but there is something special in this album for me, i'm not entirely sure what it is. I find AI overproduced too, but not nearly as much. I think warning and Nimrod were exactly as produced as they should have been. But sometimes the overproducing is good, it works well with some songs, and gives the album a different feeling to it. As for the characters in american idiot, i love them so much and i love the storyline too. 21stCB, is, for me, very different. I find it hard to compare the 2. I think it should be looked at as it's own album, not compared to american idiot. Finally, am i the only one who likes Know your enemy ??
Alan86 Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Finally, am i the only one who likes Know your enemy ?? lots of people here love that song, including me
Erica. Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Understandable I mean, none of that made me hate the album any less, I still think it's terrible, but I get where you're coming from.

Erica. Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 ahaha, good to know i think we can put this debate to rest now ^^ Right on
Satan Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 See that's where the "old" and "new" thing doesn't make sense to me. Warning is a bridge between.....it sounds really different to Nimrod and the lyrics are much more outward looking. Those outward looking, vaguely political lyrics are a step towards the very much outward looking political lyrics of American Idiot and 21st CB. Warning could be grouped equally easily with the newer albums or the older albums, so there's no clear line between new and old. They grew gradually with each of their albums so I can't see it as old and new, it isn't nearly as black and white as that. I just don't differentiate at all in my mind . My 4 favourite albums are Nimrod, 21st CB, Dookie, and American Idiot. that's pretty awesome *high five*
Zero. Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 I have my favourite songs and some songs not so much, but in both eras, I don't try and judge a band by the different years they made music, I just say that I love that song or album, but I could never pick which I would prefer
solongfromthestars Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 There isn't a Green Day album I dislike. For lyrics my favourite would have to be 21CB, but that's just because I can relate to them and I think the story is epic. Christian and Gloria are both strong characters who you actually care about if you look at the lyrics as a story. But then there's some pretty awesome lyrics going on with every album. So to me it's all just Green Day and I don't really see it as different phases.
Chloe Evans Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 In my opinion, it's Green Day. I can't like or dislike any era better than the others, because they are all good in different ways.
Sheehan Rysa Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 In my opinion, it's Green Day. I can't like or dislike any era better than the others, because they are all good in different ways. This
Punk-tastic32 Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Well, as for the music, I like both. For music videos, I'm gonna have to go with old Green Day. (I'll take Nice Guys Finish Last over 21 Guns any day)
KatherineKerplunk Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 Like most people on here, Old school Green Day!
ThiagoMN Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I think the best way to walk is forward. Old or New??? I don't see it like that...I see a band...Green Day...and I like their music...been a fan for 19 years. Right now...at this exact moment...I'm listening to my favourite songs of the trilogy. But every now and again I go back to past records. It's like choosing if I like myself as a child, a teenager or an adult. I mean...I'm much more centered and happy now...but I had a lot of fun on all the years that passed. I like my life now but I also like to remember the good stuff from the past. Same with GD...I like them a lot now...and I like to hear their past stuff too. Green Day was great then and they just keep on getting better...in my opinion!!!
Platypus2000 Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 Please, sue me for saying this, but I prefer new, it's the era where I've had the most emotional connection to thier music (which is weird 'cause Nimrod is by favourite album).
J&TheNight Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 There's threads like this... And both, all Green Day is just pure amazing!! Although if I had to choose old school is always the best, Kerplunk is my all time favorite album... By god start listening to it more! When you actually listen to it and give it a good chance you'll find it's an AMAZING album! Agreed. This whole "the mix was bad" thing is getting a bit annoying. Has no one listened to this album through anything besides $5 earbuds? The mix is superb if you actually give it a chance. Or , idunno, DON'T listen to a shitty downloaded copy. I did for a long time because I ripped the disc bad. I finally just got it again in much better quality and DAMN, is there a lot you miss in the mix. I also have new, much higher quality, headphones. Seriously, this album wasn't given a fair chance by many. I listen to it often, every track. I even tacked on the 4 bonus track and the B-Sides on mine, because I love this album so much. Edit: I'm a fan of new and old Green Day. Entirely. I don't listen to most of 1039/Kerplunk, but I don't hate them either. If I was forced to pick a side, I'd go with new I guess? If new is Post Dookie. But I suppose there's 3 categories: 1039-Dookie Post Dookie-Warning Ai-Tre So I guess I'm the third, but that's just stupid. I love all 3 eras of Green Day. Equally. they're so damn talented.
The Grohl Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 I like both sounds. They both have their ups and downs I think.
Kerplunk!!! Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Considering 1039 is my favourite i will definetly go with old, but tbh i like everything after except for 21stcb. The trilogy is a great blend of new/old school Green Day in my opinion.
StuckWithInsomnia Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I like the American Idiot sound the most, but I like old school Green Day of Nimrod, Insomniac and Dookie. Kerplunk and 39 Smooth can be known as "vintage Green Day"
MaraGreenDay Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 FOR ME THERE´S NO OLD OR NEW GREEN DAY, FOR ME IT´S JUST GREEN DAY AND I LIKE EVERYTHING NO MATTER WHAT, THE CHANGES, THE MUSIC, THE LOOK, EVERYTHING, VIVA LA GREEN DAY!!!!!
Cath Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 FOR ME THERE´S NO OLD OR NEW GREEN DAY, FOR ME IT´S JUST GREEN DAY AND I LIKE EVERYTHING NO MATTER WHAT, THE CHANGES, THE MUSIC, THE LOOK, EVERYTHING, VIVA LA GREEN DAY!!!!! Oh my god. Considering my favorites album are Dookie, Nimrod, Warning and AI and these are placed in the middle of all albums Green Day has done I have to say I dont really have a preference between old and new GD. But if we split from 1989 to 2013 in three then the second part is really my favorite. The middle of their career in fact.
