New or old school GD?

I love almost all Green Day music, but there's one album that was the biggest disappointment for me, 21st Century Breakdown. We've waited for this album 5 years, and then here comes some shitty thing. I honestly like only 2-3 songs. At first I thought that album was pretty good, interesting..when I listened to it the second/third time I realised that it's just not that, it's not what it was really meant to be. My favorite Green Day album would be either the first 1,039/SOSH or the second, Kerplunk!

Why is this still open and why is it still in General?

Yes, I'm being a backseat mod but come on.

We've had threads like this before, and really it's not needed anyways.

And this has been here for 12+ hours and it hasn't been touched? Shame.

/prepared for castration

I think it's a lot easier just to report it :P

I don't think of it as old and new. Just one long line of gradual change, fabulous from start to finish

Okay, let's take everything I've said in this thread so far, and condense it into this because it makes a lot more sense than my rant

Both old and new Green Day i love all there music because i can always find the perfect song to listen to depending on the mood im in :)

I'm not sure if someone already said this

So i'm gonna be lame and say 'I can't choose' but I seriously can't! Theres nothing better than blasting out 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours on full volume, but then there's nothing more comforting than listening to songs like 21 Guns, Jesus of Suburbia or Restless Heart Syndrome when you feel kinda down or just not in the mood for really fast songs. The thing with Green Day for me is not even about the material as such, it's their energy and their passion for what they do, and I think that's remained the same throughout their career.

from the very beginning to the moment we are now i like seeing how all of them have changed from boys to men, now they want to share other thing in their songs, they want to achieve another goals in music, they want to improve themselves as songwriters. And that's great. We all miss old school Green Day, but it won't come back, cos so many things have changed. Some people don't like time around warning era, but it was a necessity to help them to get where they're now. Some people don't like the way they represent now, but I'm sure that deep inside we all admire everything what have ever been created by them.

I love all of there stuff really, it's like flicking through a diary or something you can hear the band evolving and maturing through every album. I love how each album changes, has new themes, and different sounds, it's like your growing up with them and different albums relate to different parts of your own life. So because every album is just as important to me as the last i couldn't ever have a preference of their old or new sound.

I prefer old Green Day, but even though I listen more to their older songs, dosen't mean I don't like their new stuff.

They've always been an amazing band. They still are to this day.

The line between "old" and "new" is supposed to be between Warning and American Idiot?

hm...both. Cause the thing with Green Day is, contrary to popular belief, there's really no clear cut difference. Each album they make is a projection of both what they're feeling inside as well as a sign of the times. First we have Dookie, which is sort of the frustration of growing up, because the guys were around 20 at the time, which is like the bridge between adolescence and adulthood, right? And then we have Insomniac which has darker themes which represents sort of their need to prove themselves as something they really aren't, their inner turmoils and stuff, cause that was sort of a bad time for them, I think...and then we have Nimrod, which starts their creative branching-out with songs like Good Riddance - but they still have their punk CORE, stuff like Nice Guys and Platypus. Then we have the creative stepping-stone that is Warning - the bridge between so-called 'old' and 'new.' They started experimenting with different, more acoustic songs, and also more serious lyrical themes, starting to go to the world around them and society. Then with the beginning of the Bush era we have AI, which is a projection of the fucked-upness of society and a struggle to find something to believe in and after that we have 21stCB, which is basically looking for hope in the aftermath of the Bush administration.

So in short, I don't believe that there is OLD and NEW, there's just Green Day and their creative progression. And I love it all.

I think that's what most people are getting at, yeah. At least that's what I thought  AI and 21CB happened after a pretty long gap and have a fairly similar sound, so I just kind of grouped them together :3

Old school Green Day, didn't like American Idiot and 21st CB that mutch. But rather AI than 21st. But I do prefer old school Green Day.

See that's where the "old" and "new" thing doesn't make sense to me. Warning is a bridge between.....it sounds really different to Nimrod and the lyrics are much more outward looking. Those outward looking, vaguely political lyrics are a step towards the very much outward looking political lyrics of American Idiot and 21st CB. Warning could be grouped equally easily with the newer albums or the older albums, so there's no clear line between new and old.

They grew gradually with each of their albums so I can't see it as old and new, it isn't nearly as black and white as that.

I just don't differentiate at all in my mind . My 4 favourite albums are Nimrod, 21st CB, Dookie, and American Idiot.

I dont buy in to this New Green Day Old Green Day thing. To me there is no such thing. Its all just Green Day and I love it all

I love everything.

:)

I prefer everything from AI and prior, and I don't really prefer 21CB :)

I love them both equally for their own reasons.

Though I like their older songs a bit more (I love the new ones too) I don't like to make a seperation like that.

Eh, this question kind of gets to me. I think I listen to more of their older stuff than I do their newer stuff, but it's really really difficult to choose.

Yeah I guess it just depends how you look at it. I see AI and 21CB as "new" and everything prior as old, but I guess it doesn't really matter, haha. My favorite albums are Warning, AI, and Dookie, so I don't really care that much
