Lol! The "Ooooh" right before "apathy" is hilarious, autotune at its best. Well, I personally prefer to say worst.

I have :)

If you're planning on sharing it at all, would you mind sending me a PM with a link to them?

I finally watched the AAF DVD again. This time on our tv with surround sound. PERFECT.

What you guys are hearing isnt autotune, It is the sound of billie jumping around and slightly out of breath.

p.s. Autotune doesnt really work for live recordings because of the audience and instrument bleed through the vocal mic. i.e. it would not work to tune the vocal without tuning the audience pitch as well... So it would sound super strange. it only really works in the studio, and still not without being obvious in my opinion. it makes everyone sound like the same singer.

So do the guys not use auto-tune in the studio, or is just such a small amount that it doesn't make it sound all fucked?

I love the CD and the DVD as well!!! My personal favorites on the CD would probably be "Cigarettes and Valentines", "Burnout", "Who Wrote Holden Caufield?", "She", and "Good Riddance." I thought the entire DVD was amazing. The crowd was awesome and the performance was even better. Probably my two favorite songs from the DVD would be "Holiday" and "The Static Age." Jason's saxophone solo was incredible!

Auto-Tune, really? Maybe I'm used to 100 percent Auto-Tuned artists like Britney, so I can't detect a small bit of it, but I just can't hear it, even on Christie Road. I think it's just an amazing performance.

Posted

Well the beginning of Christie Road definitely has auto-tune, but it's somewhere where the auto-tune is actually needed! (compare it to youtube videos if you want, he's pretty flat on a few notes! :P)

But they definitely don't use it much at all elsewhere, and if they do use it other places, it's done really well and in very small doses...

Either way, just got finished watching it for the 6th time (and 7 listens through the CD so far)... I'm really blown away by the whole thing... It's extremely incredible!

I never knew listening to a live album could be so addicting. In a good way.

Oh, I know! It's all I've been listening to since I got it Monday night.

Christie Road sounds incredible. Of course I love it because I was at that show, but I love the first verse. Billie's voice is so beautiful.

I think that what people generally think of as "auto-tune" is dubbing/double-recording/retaken vocals. T-Pain's iPhone app is a somewhat auto-tune really is, and Green Day has clearly never used that.

I think everyone should just shut up with the whole autotune bull shit

Amen to that!!!

^ I agree so much with you. I'm really disappointed how it wasn't on the actual CD. xD

The one part in 21 Guns where Billie drags out "stone" around the guitar solo..

Lemme just say, "OH MY GOD." I cannot stop listening to that part. I love it. So much.

That part and the part after that where it's just him and the piano. Those parts are just beautiful.

I second that. I love it so much. I wish that's how the studio recording would have been.

Let me just say that Awesome as Fuck is AWESOME AS FUCK!!!

Love the old songs! Specially Going to Pasalaqcua! Great album!

I just watched the DVD again and when they played She, the bass suddenly muffled and Billies voice sounded wierd. O_O Is it like that for you guys ?

Posted

It's not just you though. A lot of people are pointing to that line at the whole of WWHC as evidence of Auto-tune usage on the CD, and I just don't hear it. Vocal tracks can have minor corrections done (including some pitch correction) without Auto-tune, sometimes even by having the artist come in and re-sing a few lines here and there.

I think we should stop analyzing the fuck outta it and just enjoy. :)

Well I understand what auto-tune is used for, and I know a lot of bands use it very slightly to correct things, and it's not really obvious like some songs or artists overuse it.

I just was never really sure if Green Day actually used it or not in the studio.

Here is Burnout with AutoTune for you guys

That's the vocal track from Rock Band if I'm hearing that correctly....Dookie era, back when Billie's voice was still developing and he *needed* AutoTune effects to keep a consistent pitch. Fast-forward to the present -- his vocal quality grew by a few orders of magnitude as Butch pushed him during the FBHT and 21CB productions.....and then came AIOB. Anyone who's been to the show when Billie's been performing St. Jimmy this year knows what he's capable of doing with his voice now. AutoTune? Hah. He don't need no stinkin' AutoTune. :ninja:

I love your posts..... as always I So Fucking agree!!!!! Wish you could be at AI with us in April :(

I love the way they reworked certain songs; a lot of times they stripped it down to Billie's voice and a guitar/piano, which was really beautiful. Christie Road is just one example; I remember it being done on Murder City and a few others that he did acoustically, like Coming Clean.

Well I understand what auto-tune is used for, and I know a lot of bands use it very slightly to correct things, and it's not really obvious like some songs or artists overuse it.

I know, it wasn't directed specifically at you. Everyone is throwing auto-tune around like its the same as re-recording and its not.

Posted

Well, on the autotune thing I'll just say that Christie Road sounds suspiciously perfect at some points.

I heard Christie Road acoustic, live, Verizon Center in DC on the summer 2009 US tour leg. It WAS perfect and blew us all the fuck away.

So let me get this straight....hard-core Green Day fans here are listening to some live Green Day recordings and are actually asking themselves why Billie Joe sounds so fucking good. You know the answers, all. Chill.

Seriously what the hell people, just be glad we have new shit to listen to!!! Ok so did I miss your review?? Again I will tell you I think you have a pathway to my thoughts :eyebrows:
