Hermione Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Watched it last night, it's wonderful! It captures the energy and happiness of a Green Day show better than I've ever seen before. All those great shots of smirks on faces and stuff like that......I dunno something about it just gets across that lovely energetic and happy feeling of a Green Day show. Have to say though, as expected it was lacking a bit in silliness. Okay there were some silly moments and I do appreciate that, but my absolute favourite songs to see live are the silliest/quirkiest ones so they basically cut out my favourite songs. I loved all the rarer songs but of the "usual" songs they did I wish they'd kept some silly ones instead of un-silly ones. If they'd done: - St. Jimmy instead of Holiday - Longview instead of She - Metal medley/Brain Stew/Jaded instead of When I Come Around - King For A Day/Shout instead of Jesus Of Suburbia I'd be much happier . Or even just King For a Day, I really did miss that. BUT all that being said, even though my favourite songs aren't there I LOVE the rest of the songs they do anyway so I loved watching this. Amazing to see them do My Generation, love the way Good Riddance finishes, love the saxophone bit in Static Age, and oh my god American Eulogy , just so much great stuff. And it brought back great memories. Oh and also, the intro at the beginning as so brilliant my sister and I had to rewind it and watch it 4 times before we could watch the rest
Zelda Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I'm getting it after school...this is going to be a long day.
GuitarPunk94 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 how can you actually hear the difference between "the original billie voice" and the "auto-tuned" one??
Hermione Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Another thing I have to mention that I didn't like is how they butchered the "saving" bit of EJN. It's cut in a really odd way, any over-the-top religious preacher stuff is cut out and I disliked the way they slowed down the video so it was out if sync. Blah, ruined what's usually a very amusing part of the show. I did like the bloke's costume and the look Billie gave him as he was being saved though Overall I think it could've done with a bit less of the effects.........but they were mostly tolerable. And I was expecting the way it cuts around quite a lot to annoy me but it really didn't in this case. They did it in a way that added to the energetic feeling of the show and captured loads of cool/funny/sweet little moments because of it. Perfect shots of facial expressions and jumps and stuff.
Kaddi. Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I think it gets really clear that you like Green Day, so I don't think people will get upset about that. Just sayin'. I haven't completely watched the DVD yet, but I agree with what you said about BIAB because, as much as I love it, the editing was sometimes a bit annoying. I also watched a view clips from AAF and yeah... I don't know why they think those colorful filters look good. I mean yeah, they kinda do, but the point of a concert DVD is to watch a concert. I think a Green Day show as such is exciting enough and doesn't have to be made even more spectacular by using tons of filters, angles, etc. I get what you wanna say with your review and I also agree with most points... but I'm too much of a Green Day freak to be able to not like it. I already know I will love it even if the editing will annoy the hell outta me.
Sarabeth Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 lol. The bonus tracks on iTunes are the most popular by far because everybody is buying the physical version, and the bonus tracks. I'm getting it after school...this is going to be a long day. Oh my god I know! me too
Hermione Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 how can you actually hear the difference between "the original billie voice" and the "auto-tuned" one?? I couldn't hear any autotune . Only bits where the video and audio were out of sync. But that was mostly done on purpose as an effect type of thing.
Bastard of 1967 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey. OK, kiddos, this review may sound a bit negative so don't get your panties in a bunch and let me finish because overall, I really enjoyed the DVD but there are a lot of niggles that are really bugging me about this DVD and I feel the need to air them and get everyone else's opinion. +1rep for balanced, well-written, well-expressed honesty, m'friend. My copy of the DVD should be arriving today...very much looking forward to watching it tonight, and then comparing opinions here. I'll post mine once I can make an informed one!
IscoredWaddlesgoals Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Is anyone else hearing ''Bernard touched my hair'' in Going To Pasalacqua ? Dunno if I'll bother with the DVD.
Hermione Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 You know in American Eulogy it stops in the middle of Mike's second verse and cuts to a long instrumental bit? I've never seen a video of that song live before so when that happened I seriously thought they'd cut out the second part of that verse with "I don't give a shit about the modern age!" (the best bit of the song), and I was so pissed off . But then they did it after the instumental bit and I was very pleased Is anyone else hearing ''Bernard touched my hair'' in Going To Pasalacqua ? Dunno if I'll bother with the DVD. Whaaaaat?! You should bother! Even if it's just to watch the intro because that is not to be missed
elephantstone Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 both "hidden" "unlisted" songs on the dvd are amazing! Am I missing something??
EvanAsFuck Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Ultimate Guitar has this big full screen add for AAF up now: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ 45 minutes until Best Buy opens so that I can get my hands on a copy!!!

I don't want to buy something I'll only watch once because it looks like the cameraman filmed it after too many fizzy sweets.
JaseminTheIdiot Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Today everyone can buy 'Awesome As Fuck' I got mine firday
David41275 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 how can you actually hear the difference between "the original billie voice" and the "auto-tuned" one?? Because Billie voice live and Billie's voice on albums is different..... When you watch the DVD, there are places where it sounds like an album. Listen to your bootlegs, do they sound the same? Nope.
basKT_case90 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 The reason the bootlegs sound different to a professionally produced live album is because of the difference in recording equipment. Think about it. The pros have direct line access to the sound board, which means clean high quality audio. Whereas people who record bootlegs have crappy phone cameras or amature audio recording gear, and on top of that, the audio being recording is not even the primary source, as it is just a recording of an amplified audio source. Which means things are bound to sound different depending on all sorts of variables such as position and direction of recording equipment etc. This is why I find your comment about 'un-auto tuned' bootlegs sounding different to the 'clearly-autotuned' professional recordings pretty silly

I don't want to buy something I'll only watch once because it looks like the cameraman filmed it after too many fizzy sweets. Well too much editing does usually really annoy me but it didn't in this, there's funny colours used and stuff but I genuinely don't think it interferes with watching the band. Even though I'm not an effects fan I still really really enjoyed it, it captures the feeling of a Green Day show. Maybe look up a few songs from it on youtube and see what you think?
gloria123 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 101.9rxp is playing some of the tracks from AAF so far WMUWSE and J.A.R.
Velocity Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I just heard JAR and Wake Me Up When September Ends on the radio. I didn't mean to hear them before I bought the cd, but me = tears And the DJ called it "Awesome as Fudge Banana Swirl" ^bwahaha I'm listening to 101.9 too!
dria021772 Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey. OK, kiddos, this review may sound a bit negative so don't get your panties in a bunch and let me finish because overall, I really enjoyed the DVD but there are a lot of niggles that are really bugging me about this DVD and I feel the need to air them and get everyone else's opinion. DEEP BREATH.... Here we go. I was really worried about the DVD prior to it's release after the first few clips were released on the internet because I felt that the manner in which the clips were filmed and edited was bordering on OCD. After the first couple of clips I actually stopped watching them because it was becoming a serious buzzkill. For a band so concerned about 'performance', they've done a real good job of making their 2 live DVD releases look a lot like something that's been directed by an 18 year old film student. Samuel Bayer did a phenomenal job with the videos for AI, BOBD, Holiday, WMUWSE, JOS but when he was let loose on the Milton Keynes gig (BIAB) he was like a kid in a candy store. Too many cameras, too many effects, cutting that was way too fast, too many different film stocks... On it went. The videos had a narrative, the concert didn't, so he showed no discipline in the way he directed it. I may be in the minority but when I buy a Green Day Live DVD I want to see my favourite band... play a gig.... live.... Is that too much to ask? What I don't want is a director trying to impress me by how many cuts and angles and colours of film stock he can throw into a three minute song. I don't want motion sickness. The more you fuck with the shots, the less time you have to connect with the band. Music is about connection. Get 5 camera's, Put one at the soundboard, one on a crane or wirecam, and three at the front of the stage... That's fucking it. That will record a show for you. And guess what? Keep them all in COLOUR as well in post-production. My favourite filmed gig is Jaded In Chicago from 94. Why? Because, even though it's MTV, it really doesn't throw cameras about. Nice static shots, steady pans, zooms. Nothing to detract from THE BAND and the music they're playing. Granted, a cameraman does manage to switch Billie's amp off during 2000 Light Years Away, causing BJ to scream obscenities and spit at the cameraman, but hey, he was in the zone. I always hoped that Awesome As Fuck (Or AAF as I will now refer to it) would move away from the OCD - Samuel Bayer school of directing and capture Green Day properly. After he ruined Green Day's DVD, he also ruined the Nightmare On Elm Street Franchise as well.... Good work Sam! This is fucking Green Day, they're an amazing live band, probably the most entertaining rock and roll show on earth right now (Don't call it punk... Don't get me started). This is a band that does not need bells and whistles to look good. Alas, this was not to be and, incredibly, the editing in AAF is even MORE frenetic that BIAB. It looks like Michael Bay directed it. I was waiting for that fruity burnt tobacco filter he uses on everything to crop up. Quite frankly, after 10 minutes, I was waiting for Optimus Prime to show up. Too many camera angles, the video has been transferred into so many different colours and textures that it takes you out of the moment. Case and point: 21 Guns. That blue filter that's used for 75% of the song looks like shit but as soon as the solo starts and the pyro fires up, we're back to full hi-def and it looks phenomenal. So why bother making Billie look like a member of The Blue Man Group for the vast majority of it? Also, as we all know, the DVD is a few nights cut together. The problem being, there's some horrible edits in it. They even make the cardinal sin of using audio from one night over the video of the other night so it isn't quite synced with Billie's mouth. NO, NO, NO. Don't do that. Pick the best version of the song from both nights and use it, don't use footage from both nights in the same song. POSITIVES 1. It's Green Day Live and they're awesome (as fu...) Yeah, I'm not going there. 2. The track list is good but could have been better because it's not long enough. Green Day also earn extra points for not putting King For A Day/Shout for this DVD. 3. The audio, although severely tweaked in places (helloooo auto-tune!) and obvious over-dub replacement in places, is amazing through a 5.1 system. 4. The video, when it's steady enough to view it and hasn't been messed with, is crisp and clean. 5. 'Cigarettes & Valentines' is a great song and reminds me of a more innocent time when Billie was fat and unattractive, Green Day were unpopular and their audience was made of people old enough to have pubes. 6. Billie Joe doesn't age.... It's weird. 7. Tre's getting fatter. Should you buy it? Shit, yeah, you should buy it. Don't download it from somewhere, that's illegal and makes you worse than Hitler. It is better than Bullet In A BIble? No, it's not. Do I love Green Day? Yes, yes I do. I know you probably don't think I do right now after reading that diatribe but trust me, I wanted to love and enjoy this DVD more than I can express, it just disappointed me. The same way Kerrang gave it 3 K's.... Don't knock the guy for an opinion. He likes, maybe even loves Green Day too, but this release could have been SOOOOO much better. Ok I can respect your oppinion on everything except Billie being unattractive ??? As a fan who LOVED the way he looked with a little extra meat on his bones... I must say Billie was just as hot then as ever! IMO The reason the bootlegs sound different to a professionally produced live album is because of the difference in recording equipment. Think about it. The pros have direct line access to the sound board, which means clean high quality audio. The Dog Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1lyF60PBqg Why the autotuning though? its so false!
Stormy Haze Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Bought it yesterday and listened to the album during a car ride. Now, I'm gonna watch the DVD
Boston Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 God, you all sound so pretentious whining about every feature of the DVD/CD. Just fucking enjoy it.
AnnA™ Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 Ordered it last night, and with any luck I'll have it on Friday. Maybe even Thursday. For those of you who've already seen it by now, I was wondering if there's any behind the scenes material and stuff like in Bullet in a Bible? Just curious, sorry if it's been asked before.
Mato Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I was wondering if there's any behind the scenes material and stuff like in Bullet in a Bible? Just curious, sorry if it's been asked before. not really. First minute or two and couple of seconds in between songs
