I have absolutely fallen in love with the lyrics of this song.

Yet another song that shows off what a brilliant lyricist Billie Joe is.

Awesome song! I haven't listened to it much, because I'm waiting for the HQ recording.

But from the few times that I have listened to it, I really like it. It does sound like a bridge between Warning and American Idiot.

Aspects that I like about this song:

> Insane sounding bass riffs in the verses

> The lyrics. To me it's a love song, but it also says to live in the moment. It feels similar to Christian's Inferno in some way, because it's a story of one night. It doesn't sound like something just stated in general... if anyone knows what I mean?

> The guitar sound is not usual Green Day. It's very distorted. The guitar parts are also different from Green Day's usual style. A lot of one string playing.

> The solo is decent and catchy.

> Overall catchy melodies in vocals. The chorus is cool, but the verse is awesome!

I really can't wait for the live album!

I'm glad I made it here in time before this song expired since I really wanted to share my thoughts on it. I was introduced to this song a coule of weeks ago (the same time as everybody who wasn't fortunate enough to hear it at San Antonio last year). The first time I heard it was in the distance, while I was waiting in line for the Phoenix show on August 30th. I remember standing up as soon as it started echoing in the parking lot and got to the fence so I could hear better. Since that very moment, even though I could not discern a single word, I knew it was a special song. My heart wished with all it's might that Billie decided to play it one more time during the remainder of the tour, feeling that became more and more intense after hearing all the amazing stories from the Denver night when the song was first played after the announcement of the new live album.

I was lucky and got to hear the song every night for the remainder of the tour.

After I got home from that dream-like week and started analyzing the lyrics, I was dumbstruck, and suddenly knew why that song felt so special in my heart. It was so simple. Cigarettes and Valentines is a song about that special moment we've all had that when we've wish we were able to freeze time, and live forever in it. And that was the exact same feeling I had the last night of my trip before I headed home from the Green Day U.S. Tour 2010. I was dreading falling asleep in my hotel room because closing my eyes meant the dream was over. If I would've been asked my feelings that night, I could easily have said "I don't want to go back you, I don't want a kiss goodnight".

Personal feelings aside, I really like the stye of the song. I concur with J'net in saying that it kind of goes back to those early Green Days of 1039/Kerplunk, plus the 20 years of musical experience the band has gone through, which results in a more polished, neatly produced experienced. Gone is the raw, right-out-of-the-amp sound of the Lookout era, but the style is certainly there, and of course. the beautifully crafted lyrics of Mr. Armstrong.

If I didn't knew for a fact that Cigarettes and Valentines precedes American Idiot, I would assume that along with "Lights Out" and "Hearts Collide", Cigarettes gives us a good hint of where the band is aiming to be musically in the future. This may, or may not be true, but I can certainly tell that a bright green era lies ahead of us, and I couldn't be happier from it.

The lyrics of this song are very similar to Stay the night, IMO. And I love both of them

I think this music wouldn't be so ":runaround:" if it was released ... It's just being realy kind of valued, like "Wow fuck that's so awesome!" because it wasn't released and it had that whole story of the stolen record and all ... It's my opinion.

It's not the best music in the world but it's good.

I don't agree with that. It's the lyrics of this song that really caught me, and the way they flow together so beautifully...

It's lyrics like these that really get me riled up. They show what a fucking brilliant lyricist Billie Joe is, and despite the fact that Green Day is is a world renowned rock bands, and the fans get it- alot of people really don't seem to. I consider him to be one of the most UNDERrated lyricists out there.

Then to combine them with the music- even if this song weren't a buried treasure, hell, even if this song weren't GREEN DAY, I would still love it just as much as I do.

Good point -- We're seeing a softer side of Mr. Armstrong now that he's (gulp!) pushing 40! :)

Does anyone happen to have the audio ripped from this performance?

What is "the great divide" (or the Great Divide... idk?). It's mentioned in American Eulogy, it's the title of a PHGP song, (and it's probably mentioned in a whole bunch of other things I never bothered to look up as well), and now in here too and I still don't know what it is or means.

It doesn't really have that much to do with the song, but this seemed like a somewhat appropriate place to ask.

((that reminded me of an interview where he said he sucked at maths, but he had the days counted for his birthdays xD!))

today at school we had to do an act for P.E., and I had the music on my pendrive. The music we had to use finished and Stay the night, Cigarettes and Valentines and Olivia came out! xD

The start bit reminds me of Burnout!? I love this song, cannot wait for the live album!!

I love this song!

and I can't wait for the professionally recorded live version

At first I didn't like C&V but now I love it, I think it has a similar sound and style to Stay The Night which makes me believe they both could be from the same "lost" album :sherlock:

Anyway, I can't wait to hear it on the live album

My jaw dropped when they played this in Denver for the first time.

I was right on centre stage barrier for Denver. The lyrics to C&V were taped to the stage floor (after a roadie had ripped off the lyrics to Peacemaker and Gloria, much to my horror), and I rmemeber reading 'red alert is the colour of your paper valentines' and thinking 'that sounds like American Eulogy' and 'Valentines? maybe this has something to do with Cigarettes and Valentines'.

Never in my wildest imagination did I expect to hear this song, let alone 6 times on the whole tour.

I agree that C&V has similarities to Stay the Night too. There's a certain vibe about both songs. I cannot wait for the live album now, just so I can get a decent quality version of this

I, for some absolutely ridiculous reason that I cannot justify, only got around to watching the video for this now.

...oh...my...god. It was so good that I actually cried.

I am fucking speechless right now. :o

Really want a studio version of this! But bring on the live album!

ok...it was fucking awesome hearing this song live and I think its really good

But I think if it had been released instead of the American Idiot album, that Green Day wouldn't be as big as they are. This song is amazing, but to me its just not up to par with the songs on AI

I love the song. <3

To me, its sound is something between American Idiot, Warning and Kerplunk. And yeah, those lines from American Eulogy...

I also wonder how would the studio version sound. Can't wait for the live album, though.

And, as Andres said, I wonder if that's actually a song from the stolen album or they just created a song with such title after all that talk. But the older sound could prove something, couldn't it? :sherlock:

This has been my favorite song since I heard it. I'm in love with the lyrics!

I love this song and I so can't wait for the next album! It sounds a lot like it's either from Kerplunk! or Insomniac. Either way, it's terrific. I know they lost the original recording and all, but I'm wondering whether they're considering releasing all the lost material for the upcoming album?

I'd like to hear all the lost songs but I don't think it'd be a smart move to put all the lost songs as an album material. maybe few of them as an album tracks, the others as the bsides..

yes I think so too cause it wouldn't be a great album cause they made American Idiot cause Cigarettes and Valentines wasn't so good
