Katarina. Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Very appropriate song of the week! Interesting choice. I really like this song. You can definitely hear some kind of mixture between Nimrod/Warning and American idiot. Pretty cool. It's also interesting some of the lyrics are similar to the ones in American Eulogy..
Lu_S Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I think this music wouldn't be so "" if it was released ... It's just being realy kind of valued, like "Wow fuck that's so awesome!" because it wasn't released and it had that whole story of the stolen record and all ... It's my opinion. It's not the best music in the world but it's good.
bollard_11 Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I really love this song. Addicted to it to stay the least. To me it is the perfect blend of "old" and "new" Green Day if you get me. I am dying to hear a studio version!! As regards the whole Cigarettes and Valentines album debate, I believe that they did some demos, were not "feeling it" as the band knew they could do better at that time. So they hid the demos away waiting for the right time to release them. Now after 21st Century Breakdown, they have dug out these demos and refined them for the next album.
Marlee Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Awesome choice for this week!!!! This song has become my new obsession
in_your_face Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Perfect choice! it's an awesome song! btw thanks for posting the lyrics here, J'net!
Prisca Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 This song was great to hear twice at the Irvine show! Right as I got to the venue I heard them during their sound check play this song but I couldn't really hear it that good. I'm happy they played it during their set list. It was a real treat to hear! Luckily my mom was able to record the whole song on my camera so I can always go back and enjoy it.
JadedHaushinka Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Very good choice for the song of the week! I was very carried away when I saw a video of them playing it. I totally have been liking the song very much ever since. It sounds like an old school-ish Green Day for me which is great.
Bastard of 1967 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 This week’s Song of the Week is Cigarettes and Valentines. Needs to be "song of the month" if not "song of the whole fucking tour." I'm beyond envious as well as ecstatic for everyone who got to see The Song That Wasn't Supposed To Exist Anymore performed live! As for the song itself -- LOVE the Ramones-y feel of the guitar. The whole song is right out of Kerplunk-era Green Day but with post-Kerplunk polish. The lyrics? "B++/A--" in my opinion. Powerful, punchy, potent, eminently listenable with a kick-ass rhythm backing it all up from start to finish. Can't wait to hear it on the live album, and would love to finally hear it tracked in the studio. I'm still working on what "cigarettes and valentines" is serving as the metaphor for...but overall the song has an uncharacteristically (for Green Day, anyway) optimistic feel to it. A blend of "Sally" from FBHT and "Born To Run" from Bruce Springsteen's earlier days -- it seems to have this carefree "come run away with me, I don't care where it takes us and we're going to have a blast getting there" vibe to it. So, so happy they finally decided to let it out of the bag for us. This one and "When It's Time."
theeulogy Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Billie's a great songwriter The lyrics is amazing!
Bastard of 1967 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 I thought they realized the material wasn't up to the standard they wanted so they scrapped it and went bigger and better instead My thoughts on that are pretty similar, but rather than "not up to the standard they wanted", my theory is that they really wanted to take their music in a different direction than their work on C&V had been going up to that point. In the end, it's just the same -- tear it down, start again, and we get American Idiot instead. The first verse "I don’t wanna go back home. I don’t wanna kiss goodnight. Let us paralyze this moment till it dies." I'm glad you mentioned that -- I LOVE that first verse. It conjures up an image of something like a black widow spider or perhaps a tarantula sinking its fangs into its prey -- but applies it metaphorically, relating this incredible urge to fix something in its place for eternity back to the WHOMP!!! magic of a first kiss. Tre punk for anyone who doubts that this band still has the shit.
Hermione Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 My thoughts on that are pretty similar, but rather than "not up to the standard they wanted", my theory is that they really wanted to take their music in a different direction than their work on C&V had been going up to that point. In the end, it's just the same -- tear it down, start again, and we get American Idiot instead. Yeah that probably wasn't the most accurate phrase to use, I was thinking of their "not maximum Green Day" comment but this song is definitely up to standard lol. I should've said not the direction they wanted - and they wanted a bigger, more ambitious direction.
whatshername0303 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 I love this song! Thanks for the lyrics, I didn't see them before. I want an album version of C&V... or a live version on the live album!
J'net Posted September 10, 2010 Author Posted September 10, 2010 I love this song! Thanks for the lyrics, I didn't see them before. I want an album version of C&V... or a live version on the live album! Billie made it very clear that it's going to be on the live album, so it looks like you'll get your wish .
21st century idiot Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 So is it going to be recorded live or in the studio?
J'net Posted September 11, 2010 Author Posted September 11, 2010 So is it going to be recorded live or in the studio? All the shows on the final leg of the tour (at least starting with Dallas, if not before, were recorded for the live album. This song was played at all the shows starting with Denver, and he definitely said it will be on the live album. Bill Schneider also told me that when I talked to him at Shoreline. So it'll be the "recorded live" version from one of the shows.
tommy_huggs Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 I really like it! Its just a great upbeat song. Can't wait for the new live album!
spark in the night Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 first time I heard this song nice!
Of Rage and Love Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 This is another great choice for Song of the Week, it's a song that could have been released at any point of their career, and it is simplistic, yet amazing. A perfect choice
theclassof13 Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Amazingly awesome song. What Green Days all about for me.
Maura99 Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 Great choice! The more I listen to this song, the more I seem to love it. Old school Green Day... Hell yeah!
iloveyouisntenough Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 I think this is deffinitely an appropriate song, due to the recent uproar about it I happen to really like it! I'm so happy they've started playing it a bit!!
