Bastard of 1967 Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 So tell me why "Olivia" vaguely reminds me of this one:
Marlon_GD Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Olivia reminds several people of several songs because: It's a (Irish) folk song... written in 3/4, like a waltz, but with a specific strumming pattern and vocal progression... Everyone knows a folk song... but if you're not into it... you only know one or two... A lot of folk songs sound very much alike, believe me. Olivia is (in my opinion) a really folk-y song, and that rings a bell with certain people, who once heard a folk song as well... Even if the vocals sound alike, that's purely a coincidence.

That seems right. Still facepalming over the contrast between punk rock and folk -- and the fact that Green Day is clearly pulling it off well. I dare say there really isn't any musical style they can't play now.
Marlon_GD Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I dare say there really isn't any musical style they can't play now. Agreed! Although I surely hope that they will not build out a career in RnB... but they could always give a shot for one song...
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Woo, thanks for all the videos and all posted! Olivia Olivia it's raining outside the city is drenched there's a moon out tonight there's a break in the clouds just under the stars we wanna go on and watch from afar I think the last line of that verse is "Do you want to go out and watch from afar" ... Here's another mp3 of Olivia, made by a GDCer. I think he did a great job merging the two parts of the songs. It sounds awesome! Don't wanna sound like a dick, but which one is better, Andres' version or that one? also, today I've fallen in love with Olivia once more. And it has the honor of being the first song this year of which the lyrics are scribbled all over my school stuff.
Katarina. Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Don't wanna sound like a dick, but which one is better, Andres' version or that one? I haven't heard Andres' version, but since he said you can hear the split quite well, I assume the other one's better cause I didn't notice the split there.

I had already downloaded the other version yesterday night, but I was just wondering if it might've been better or something. (in the other you can notice the split btw, but only really slightly, and I don't notice it unless I try to hear it)
Fuzz Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Yeah, his is better. He made the split a little less noticeable.
Juliette Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 The link doesn't work for me Comes up with a board message error thingy.
Fuzz Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I've uploaded the mp3s (one of C&V, and Felipe's version of Olivia) with the same artwork/tags in this thread http://www.greendaycommunity.org/Forum/index.php?showtopic=80968
Francois Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 I've downloaded the songs, but I'm not going to listen to it more than a few times. I don't want to have over listened to to the song by the time that the real, good quality recordings will come out. Hopefully that won't be too long.

I'd hate to get the pro recordings and feel like I've already tired of the songs.

LetItBeHappy Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Full lyrics, thanks to the new video! Olivia Olivia it's raining outside the city is drenched there's a moon out tonight there's a break in the clouds just under the stars we wanna go on and watch from afar we couldn't care when and stepped in the mud It makes no sense but you misunderstood The city is in ruins, but there's a flower in the crack of the streets Olivia, Olivia, I'll give you my best safe in my arms, I'll lay you to rest you can borrow my coat, you wear the dress Olivia, Olivia, come follow me home This is basically Andres' audio, together with the two video's (which I kinda poorly slapped together) I dont know if these were posted, 2 full versions of C&V using blue There was a full video of Olivia posted in the Denver thread..... Thanks guys! You all made my day and Andres with the download thread for the songs too, but I forgot to quote that *goes download* Olivia reminds several people of several songs because: It's a (Irish) folk song... written in 3/4, like a waltz, but with a specific strumming pattern and vocal progression... My mom was with me when I listened to it for the first time. I said "hey, it sounds like Dylan!" and she was like "thank god, I thought it was just me". I like GD's folkish sund That seems right. Still facepalming over the contrast between punk rock and folk -- and the fact that Green Day is clearly pulling it off well. I dare say there really isn't any musical style they can't play now. i totally agree and they manage to change from one style to another really easily!
