Marsupial Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I dont find it annoying at all, the guys are really proud of the musical. which has been doing great and Im dying to see Same. I don't think that the AI cast is trying to over-shadow Green Day or just "tag-along." Green Day probably want the cast to join them for these events; the band wants the musical to be just as successful as any of their albums. It's great promotion and personally, I like the sound of Green Day and the cast together. It's different (especially with theatrics and female vocals) and it sets Green Day aside from most other rock bands today.
BJWolf Posted August 17, 2010 Author Posted August 17, 2010 Well, that of course is a matter of taste and opinion. If I told you I disagreed, would you believe it? I think you're just in a different place from a group of guys pushing forty. I'm guessing you're still in your teens and your taste in music is probably closer to what they were making when they were in their teens and early twenties too. But, they're not completely in that place anymore and the music is reflecting that. I personally think they still have an edge, but they have definitely evolved and are constantly branching out and trying new things. It's not a crime if you can't identify with what they're doing, but I think respect for how and why they're doing it is deserved. that's true and your right about my age. I guess I just Feel like the band that wrote songs like American Idiot, Holiday, Letterbomb, Jesus of Suburbia, Favorite Son... and that would say fuck America in their songs doesn't exist anymore. I have absolutely adored Green Day since I was 11 back in 2005 and i can feel this isn't the same band that gave the world the middle finger and wrote the fastest most catchy punk songs and was just pure fun. I want that band band. I don't want music that is inspired by 70s shit, or that sounds like Coldplay or a musical. I want Green Day back. I feel like my band is dying.
Guest Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Green Day has always been inspired by "70's shit".

This is Green Day. This is who they've become and if you don't like it, that's your problem. Don't blame it on the cast, or Michael Mayer, or anyone else for that matter. They're not in their twenties anymore, they can't write songs about smoking pot and masturbation for their rest of the career and the time for writing songs similar to that of American Idiot is over. The world has change a lot since 2004 so it makes sense for the subject matter of the band's songs to change also.
insomniaticnimrod Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I was never really all excited about the musical in the first place to be honest. Seeing them everywhere is kind of annoying to me. But i am not saying i dislike the whole musical thing.

That band is definitely still there, but how many times can you write about the same thing before becoming a parody of yourself, you know? I know you know what album came before American Idiot. I adore Warning but it's not exactly a collection of hard and fast punk songs. Yet, they went from that to American Idiot. These guys are always going to surprise us, so...don't write the obituary for your band yet.
pisquano Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Yes, this story is getting annoying. I don't see why they invited the cast, but let's see what the performance will be like.
Rosie May Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 The cast have only performed with Green Day a few times, and once was on the Tony's, which was all about the musical. I don't really think it's a big deal really. It's not like they're bringing them into Green Day concerts. or anything.
Schlappy Posted August 19, 2010 Posted August 19, 2010 huh... when i read the title i though this would be a respectful classy place for us too discuss the pros and cons of the American Idiot cast accompanying Green Day in their performances, but then i read the opening paragraph and i guess not
keefe Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I agree, the cast gets kind of annoying, but I think the main reason they are doing it is to promote the Broadway showing (in New York!) of American Idiot, if it's still there. The cast does get annoying, and the Grammy's performance just made me have enough. The Tony's was good so let's hope LOTAG can make me somewhat happy the musical is there.

Fuck off with your insulting Coldplay. And if you don't like it, WHO IS FORCING YOU TO GO TO THIS MUSICAL THEN?
watsername182 Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Fuck off with your insulting Coldplay. This.
nicicky Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Hearing about the musical all the time was really starting to get on my nerves as well, but then I got the chance to actually go and see it (last minute, wasn't planning to, but I won the lottery) and it definitely made me realize why people love it so much. I'd go see it again, and again... I suggest those of you who haven't seen it do the same. Go see it, I bet you'll really enjoy it. You'll find out exactly why the band loves it so much. The actors do such an amazing job at portraying the story. It's not just them dancing around and singing the songs like you see in the televised performances, a lot more goes on. So it's really justifying as to why the band invited the cast to those events, they wanted to promote this as often as they could, because the band loves the cast and knows they deserve the recognition.
in_your_face Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 well, not really. these newcomers are quite talented and they sing well. they've a better future yet to come. i like 'em singing along with Green Day and hanging out with the boys, spending a little time with the band.
TheSaltOfTheEarth Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I want to go see the musical really badly because I've heard two completely different sides to it. Some people said it sucked, but others said it was amazing, so I don't know what to believe xD But I think that the musical should get promotion. 21st Century Breakdown is too old to be promoted now. And anyway, the new single (LOTAG) IS being promoted through this, so I don't see a problem. If you want to listen to JUST Green Day, go to a concert. This is only the 3rd time they've performed with the cast. And anyway, Green Day is still performing, it's just with other talented people like them. And anyway, the band loves the musical, they're proud of it, so I think we should respect that as well, whether we like the idea or not. It's not like the musical cast ruins the performance somehow, because even Billie said that they're more talented that he is (which I personally don't think is true, but they are extremely talented people). Sometimes I want to see just Green Day too, and I'm sure we'll have lots of opportunities in the future to do so. Right now they're promoting their musical, so the cast is performing with them. Green Day performed on T.V. alone back when 21st Century Breakdown had just been released. Sure, it didn't get much promotion, but we can't change that, so why take our anger out on the musical, right?
Coffee409 Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 We as Green Day fans need to realize the possibility that Green Day has sold out You lost me with this...... Welcome to 1995.

One: yes, the musical is still on Broadway. Two: If it wasn't for the musical, Green Day would not have performed on the Tonys. Just think about that when you're complaining about the cast performing with the band.

Don't let others sway you.

Boston Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Fail thread. Its really Green Day tagging along on AI promotion because that's the only reason Green Day are getting these TV gigs lately.
Pinheadstern Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 YEAH, I KINDA DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PLAY OR ANYTHING OR THAT SORT.
Boston Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Honestly? You should go see the musical if you can and form your opinions with that. Don't let others sway you. Also, I'm guessing the people who say it sucks are either hardcore theater people who don't like the concept of a Green Day musical or hate theater and aare going the "sellout" route.
