Pedestrian9394 Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I think it's less annoying to me because I've seen the musical and loved it. =D But yes. I'm getting sick of the fact that Green Day can't play without them for some reason, at least on TV. Wow, some of the hate in this thread is kinda ridiculous. I understand if people dislike the musical, whether they have seen it or not. I admit when I heard the cast version of 21 Guns for the first time, I wasn't too fond of it and basically ignored the musical until the cast recording was released. But some of the claims that the cast are using the band to get "famous" is just stupid. It's not like the cast can invite themselves to a Green Day performance. The band obviously asked them to join them. They're proud of the cast and what they've been able to create together, and if they want to promote it, well that's their choice. As for promoting 21st Century Breakdown, isn't that what the tour is for? As others have said, some of the cast were famous, if you will, before American Idiot. The role of Jesus Of Suburbia in the musical was practically written for John Gallagher Jr. Hence the reason why the character's name is Johnny to begin with. Michael Mayer presented the idea of the musical when he invited the band to see Spring Awakening when Gallagher was in it. I mean, everyone has the right to like or dislike the musical as they would like or dislike any other Green Day album. Saying the cast recording "ruined" American Idiot is silly. If you don't like it, don't listen to it. /rant Word. =D The musical gave me a better appreciation for the album.
JT of Suburbia Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Well, to be honest what I meant by that was that I'll SUPPORT it, not necessarily like it. I don't love every song, in fact there are some that I don't like, in which I WILL state "I'm not a fan of that song, for this reason", not "omg i love this" even if I don't. It's more along the lines of the fact that I know they've tried really hard on the song so if I don't like it I'm not going to hate on it. Theres a difference between supporting a band and kissing ass, does that make sense? Lol. yeah it does and i agree with you ill admit the cast worked hard on the adaption even though i dont like it
Chad is Rad Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I wasn't a big fan of the guy who did Know Your Enemy. I thought his voice was pretty annoying to be completely honest...there were a few others I didn't like too much also. One thing I did like, was the musical cast version of Letterbomb. I thought she did a great job.
Hermione Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Well, to be honest what I meant by that was that I'll SUPPORT it, not necessarily like it. Pretty much my position on it. I support them doing what they want and if they're happy doing something I'm happy for them. It might not be to my taste (it isn't ) but Green Day aren't there to cater to my taste.
BJWolf Posted August 15, 2010 Author Posted August 15, 2010 Honestly, to the haters in this thread, do you really call yourselves Green Day fans? Let me put it this way, if Green Day were to be able to read this thread and see all of the hate that you're posting, do you really think they'd like to see people hating on something that they've worked so hard on? I think not. I'm not just referring to the people who have their opinions which are just like "I dislike it, blah blah" I'm referring to those of you who have been extremely rude & uncalled for within this thread. Seriously dudes, not cool Alot of people here haven't SEEN the musical at all and yet they're judging it so harshly... I find that wrong. If you have seen it and are able to actually pass judgement on it, then thats one thing but not seeing it and going "lyke omg they're so annoying they're on tv with them all the time I can't see billie joe's face" grow up. It makes sense that a ROCK OPERA gets turned into a MUSICAL. Its not a random, out of nowhere, just to sell out and make some money kind of thing, so if you have an issue with Green Day having fun making something unique such as a musical, which isn't something that you see every day in the music industry with rock bands, then you have no reason to call yourselves fans. Seriously, get over yourselves and support the band you signed up onto a forum for, damnit. ^ We're allowed to state our personal opinions, right? I started this whole thing and I am the biggest Green Day fan there is. I love Green Day. I love American Idiot(I'm 15 so I've been addoring this album since I was like 11). I like that they turned the album into a musical. I am thrilled with it's success. However I am very damn pissed off thatthe cast and musical has taken priority over real Green Day and that I can't watch Green Day perform at a fucking award show or at a great event that will get them a shit load of publicity without the cast ruining the music and ruinin their opertunities to promote themselves. And that is what I hate. Oh everyone who thinks the musical music and the cast is Green Day. get your Fucking facts right. Green Day is Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre. Not Billie, Mike, Tre, Michael Mayer, and the Damn cast. The musical was inspired by Green Day and created by Michael Mayor. It's the broadway interpretation of their music not the actual thing. And I'm sick and tired of seeing the cast perform over Green Day's playing. Keep them seperate. The AI musical IS NOT GREEN DAY and I WANT GREEN DAY!

To the bolded part that you wrote: Green Day & the cast of "American Idiot" have performed together in two award shows. One was the Grammys which was clearly Green Day's arena and one was the Tonys which was clearly the musical's arena. One invades the other's arena and vice versa. That's it. The way that you put it makes it sound like the cast is with Green Day everywhere when the fact is... they're not! If you're going to argue that the cast is tagging along with Green Day to every televised event, "get your fucking facts right."
Moffie Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Dude, your obvious immaturity and narrow-mindness renders every point you make invalid to me. Stop bringing up your age, your oblivious look on the world and other unimportant facts into it. Some of us have been fans longer than you've been alive. I've been a fan for 14 years but you don't see me bringing it up every other sentence. So make an educated point or shut the hell up.
GreenDay41 Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 Now, now, guys... To each their own right? Lets not cause any big wars over this or anything. I do see your frustration a bit, however I agree a bit more with plaid ducky, who stated that they're NOT with them ALL the time. It's true, I'm going to see them on Wednesday and they will not be attending. Green Day is still Green Day, touring around and making hit singles & music videos to support those singles, and the AI cast is helping them promote that as well so I think we do need to thank them a bit for that. I'm glad to hear that you're not bashing the musical, however I can't fully agree with what you have said, thats all.

I'm glad to hear that you're not bashing the musical, however I can't fully agree with what you have said, thats all. obviously they don't go on tour with Green Day, but most of the recent live performances on tv have been with the cast. I don't have the ability to follow Green Day around on their whole tour to get my live Green Day fix and I don't like watching live performances on YouTube or something after they've been perfomed as much as I do catching them while they are playing so I really like it when they perform on tv. It just makes me mad when I can't watch them and I need to watch other people sing for them. Part of the reason I'm so upset is that it's football and when it comes to football I'm a fanatic and so I was absolutely elated to find out that 2 of my favorite things in the world would be put together. An then I was crushed to find out I wouldn't be watching a true Green Day performance, and instead I would get a broadway performance with Green Day participating.
Guest Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I also wish that Green Day didn't pull the cast into every performance they do of late. I'm a GD fan, not a fan of these random people I've never heard of before.

There are some things I've said in this that I probably could have said with more intelligence and with less all out hate and I have been a little harsh on the cast and their fans but when Green Day is being shoved asside so those broadway kids can show off their pretty little voices I'm going to respond appropriately. I'm not ashamed to express it and let other people know how I feel. Honestly how can you call yourself a real fan when you see Green Day's music being disgraced. The musical belongs on broadway where it is good stuff not on Monday Night Football where it is an embarrassment to real fans and to Green Day's image. Green Day should be Green Day and broadway should be broadway. There is no reason broadway needs to fuck with Green Day's career.

You have the right to say who is a 'real' fan and who isn't? Who the fuck deemed you that person? I like musicals. I like Green Day; some people don't like the former. Some do. Some like both. Learn proper grammar, learn how to respect other people and please don't insult the rest of us.
plaid ducky Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 BJWolf, pay attention to the logic that I'm about to tell you... Besides their Fallon appearances, Green Day has performed twice live in the past eight months on TV. Once at the Grammys and once at the Tonys. And yes, those were with the cast. However, if they didn't perform with the cast, then they would have never played at the Tonys and you, watcher of live Green Day performances, would be left with one televised performance. Now, the musical's cast has performed solo on their own terms more times, televised than Green Day. If your complaint was "Shit! I keep on seeing the cast perform on TV than Green Day!" then you have a solid argument and I would certainly leave you alone with your valid opinion. However, your argument is that the cast is overtaking Green Day's performances, which isn't true. In fact, I would say that Green Day took over the cast's performance at the Tonys; actually, many people said that they did... And honestly, Green Day has been busy with their live tour to appear on TV shows. In the end, the Jets opener performance is their 3rd time with the musical cast and who's to say what the cast will actually end up singing. They quite honestly could be in the backing vocals and you wouldn't know the difference. So, take a chill pill for a moment. There are lots of inside sources around here and we can certainly find out beforehand on what Green Day & the cast are planning for the football game, whether it's backing vocals or full-out duets. Okay? It might not be as terrible as you're wanting it to be. And it's certainly won't be "a broadway performance with Green Day participating."
blitzkriegdeb Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 This thread is rediculous. I haven't seen the musical. I don't plan to see it. I'm not really a fan of the cast recordings. However, the amount of flattery to have a piece of your work turned into a hit Broadway is unimaginable. That musical was made totally under the band's inspection. It's their work being interpreted into something that's a bit unorthodox, and obviously they loved that. Like I said before, the musical will end eventually and this whole thing will die down. Also, they've only played together, what, 2 or 3 times, at award shows? And don't start the shit with "how can you call yourself a Green Day fan when blah blah blah". There are people on here, younger and older then you, who find the musical beautiful and out of this world, that doesn't make them any less or greater a Green Day fan. Being a fan is respecting the band for what they are: a fucking amazing band who makes great music. Nothing is going to change that.

Okay, thus far I have respected the fact that you dislike the cast performing with the band, even if it were only two times and one of those performances wouldn't have even occurred if the musical didn't exist. Hell, I barely even touched on the fact you called out on the band "selling out". But insinuating that the fans who appreciate the musical are lesser fans is just going too far. Green Day performing on Monday Night Football is not an embarrassment to "real fans" and who gives a shit about the bands image? If you like their music, then that's all that should matter. I hardly think the musical has fucked with Green Day's career.
Mar Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I really like it when the cast plays with them in performances etc.. but I feel as if it's just a little too much. Regarding performances, Green Day's almost never on their own again, and as much as I love the musical and love it when they do something together, I would also like to see Green Day do more tv performances on their own. Although on the other side, they haven't done that much together. Only two or three things, I think? Plus that halftime Jets thing. I think I feel this way because the cast is doing a lot of performances everywhere, while Green Day isn't (well, they're doing a tour, which obviously is a lot of shows. But that's different ). I guess I would just like it if Green Day did more tv performance thingies on their own. That said, I still really like it when they do stuff together. It's hard to decide what I actually think xD In regards to your first statement, yeah, if you look at the numbers, they haven't done a whole lot with them. Yet, for some reason, it FEELS like they have. And maybe because, unlike a lot of the general public, we big fans who post on the message boards and stuff hear about the musical much more than everyone else. Therefore, more of us may get tired of it easier. Maybe it's just an illusion that the cast is everywhere because we do see it everywhere.
Hermione Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 This topic should have a pole. In regards to your first statement, yeah, if you look at the numbers, they haven't done a whole lot with them. I don't think it's entirely an illusion though. Even though they haven't done that many tv performance etc with the cast, they haven't done that many on their own either. No Storytellers etc, not nearly as many cool performances and tv appearances as we got with American Idiot. Or at least not nearly as many major, really worth watching ones. The promotion of and choice of singles has been so half-hearted and low key. It's not how much musical stuff they've done, it's how little 21st CB stuff it seems like they've done in comparison.

sammers93 Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I'm on the fence about this. The musical excites me (drama kid, right here!), so I never minded the fact that they were making it. And I can see why they invite them to perform with them. The cast work their asses off and put on great shows to bring the band's music to life, and televised appearences are like Green Day's way of thanking them, and letting them show off their hard work. In my opinion, anyway. But yes, sometimes I too roll my eyes when I hear the choir behind the band. Because sometimes damnit, I just want to hear Green Day... ^This. Couldn't have said it better myself.
netty Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 the cast and musical arent fucking up the bands career or their image. they are part of it. the show and everything that goes with it is part of the whole green day package. learn to ignore it because how you feel about it and whatever you post about it wont change a thing! the guys chose to do all this. every part of it. they arent forced to do things. arent told to either. you are directing your anger over this towards the cast when really the decisions have been made by the band.
Eirik Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 I'm embarrased that Green Day are playing during a football game.
McNavdo Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 The musical isn't annoying but the promotion of it is. They should not be playing with the band in an attempt to get more people interested cos if you were going to see the musical then your not gonna see them performing with Green Day. It's kind of a cheap way of trying to build interest and it shows a lack of confidence if they feel that nearly all of the promotion has to be focused on the band and not the cast. What also doesn't make sense is having them perform at an american football game which will be mostly watched by men that don't give a shit about the musical. I personally feel that this can only make Green Day look bad amongst the viewers. These people will want to see a rock band and not a group of dancers and broadway actors/actresses

Yes, more poles! Also a very good point. I feel like they were EVERYWHERE in the AI era. There were many opportunities for people to discover the band. With this album, I don't sense that as much.
colormestoopid Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 the broadway adaption of american idiot is wayy to much like HSM they made it all happy and childish IMO glee should have just done a green day episode and gotten it over with insted of all this touring and interviews about it Cause you know simulated sex, heroine use, constant swearing, and losing limbs is SO HIGH SCHOOL.
