Are Green Day and the AI cast getting annoying

I disagree with the statement that the musical is "not Green Day." The musical is very much Green Day. Green Day is not just simply a 3-piece rock group. It's a whole lot bigger than that. I think Billie Joe said it well in the intro to BIAB: "people say to me, 'What would you do if you didn't have Green Day?' - Or you know, people say, 'What do you think of people that only talk to you or like you because you're in Green Day?' And I say, 'Well, I AM Green Day. That is me... that is, my life.' "

I think that transcending from just making albums and playing live shows to having a broadway musical is something few and far between have done and the guys just want to capitalize on this period in time when they have got it.

Who knows the fate of the musical... it could very well fizzle out, so I think Billie Joe and company want to enjoy the time they have with their baby.

Oh and to the person comparing the musical to high school musical? Are you kidding me? There is nothing child-like about the show at all. I thought it struck very well with the mood and imagery from the album. But I could be insane.

I consider myself a Green Day fan because I appreciate their music and I love seeing them perform as a band. I understand that Green Day are proud of the musical and enjoy performing with the caste, but that doesn't mean that all fans have to sit back and respect every single project and thing they create. You can still be a fan of the band and be critical of certain things they do. It doesn't always have to be either loving everything and anything the band do just because they created it and enjoy it too, or hating on the band completely. There is middle ground for criticism IMO.

Also, I personally don't see the AI musical and Green Day as a one entire entity that you have to either appreciate or hate completely and be a 'bad' fan. Sure Green Day were very hands on with the musical and were completely behind it, but fans can still be critical of the musical while simultaneously loving Green Day and wanting to see them perform.

Oh my God, well said.

If Glee covered Green Day I'd give myself a colonoscopy with one of my ribs.

Like someone else said, the musical will eventually run it's course and end. I guess you have to think of it from their perspective: they helped to create a highly popular Broadway musical based off of their work. Although, I do feel like the promotion of it kind of pulled away promotion (or lack thereof) from 21stCB. In the end, Green Day is still Green Day, no ifs ands or buts.

The first sentence is fantastic, if a horrifying idea.

The cast doesn't have to perform with Green Day on whatever show they are. I liked what they did with the Grammys, but that was enough for me. I'd rather see seperate cast performances, and Green Day shows. But annoying? No, I love the cast album, and some of the songs, for exemple, LOTAG/SAR, Holiday and Last Night on Earth are amazing.

I like the way they play alongside GD. It's different.

Imo, I like the Cast Album.

And I haven't tired of it yet because to me, it's still a bit novel and I guess I've seen Green Day play so many times this year by themselves that it doesn't bother me when they perform with the cast. I actually think it's kinda cool. But I realize that a lot of people haven't seen them a lot over the past year, so I can see where it would get annoying. And they haven't really done "everything" with them lately. They did the Tonys (which Green Day would never have been on if the musical hadn't existed), and the Grammies, but I don't remember anything else that they've performed at together, unless you count when Green Day got onstage with the cast the day after opening night.

After reading all of these posts I feel I need to add something. First, Green Day tours almost constantly all across the world and millions upon millions of people have the opportunity to see them and multiple times at that. The musical is only in NYC and many many people can not get there to see it, and knowing how excited Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre are about it, they probably only agreed to do the show if the cast could come along. Secondly, good bands change slightly over time but great bands evolve within themselves and this is exactly what Green Day has done time and time again. I have been listening to Green Day since my dad bought me Kerplunk on cassette (18 years ago) and if they had just kept doing the same thing over and over again, there is no way I would still consider them to be my favorite band.

I quite like the cast being there, I think they're good and it's not like they're going on tour with Green Day is it?

I like the idea of the musical as such and I'd really like to watch it, but I haven't... so maybe that's why the whole musical thing annoys me a bit. Not only the cast performing with Green Day, but also all the "news" about it on GDA all the time. But whatever. I think they shouldn't mix up Green Day and the musical this much. I know, both belongs together in a way, but I agree that the musical cast shouldn't perform with the band anymore.

I'm on the fence about this.

The musical excites me (drama kid, right here!), so I never minded the fact that they were making it.

And I can see why they invite them to perform with them.

The cast work their asses off and put on great shows to bring the band's music to life, and televised appearences are like Green Day's way of thanking them, and letting them show off their hard work.

In my opinion, anyway.

But yes, sometimes I too roll my eyes when I hear the choir behind the band.

Because sometimes damnit, I just want to hear Green Day...

^Pretty much my thoughts.

The cast is really talented, there's no denying that. Although it would be great to see another Green Day show, just by themselves. I guess I'm just a bit afraid that everybody will think that the musical is the only thing that Green Day have right now, when they have a kick-ass album with songs that need to be released, but haven't yet.

The musical cast has preformed with Green Day twice, the football game will make it three times. That's hardly a lot. They both preformed on the Tony's because, well it's the Tony's. They both preformed on the Grammy's because 21 Guns was nominated and it was an opportunity to promote the single and the musical. The half-time show is the exact same, they're promoting the single and the musical. It's Green Days decision not the cast members, they love the musical and they want to promote it, there is nothing wrong with that. You don't have to like the musical and it's definitely not hard to ignore it if you don't.

I like them doing performances with the cast because it's as close to seeing the musical as I'm going to get.

21st Century Breakdown has been out for over a year now, it's not a new album so there will not be much promotion for it, that's how it goes. The musical has been out a few months, there will be promotion.

I personally love it when the band invite the cast to perform with them. The band are obviously proud of the musical and if they want to promote it then it's their choice. It's not like they've invited the cast to go on tour with them! Sure they've performed at the Grammy's together, that was the musical's debut of sorts. It made sense for them to perform at the Tony's together because it's an award show for Broadway musicals and plays. If you think about it, the cast and the band have barely performed together.

As for keeping news on the musical and the band separate, at the end of the day, "American Idiot" is a musical adaption of a Green Day album. It's another creative outlet for the band and I personally treat it like I would for a new Green Day album. Love it or hate it, it's still something Green Day related.

Oh and the whole "selling out" thing? Green Day technically "sold out" over 16 years ago when they signed onto Warner Bros. If people are still going to hold that against them, well I just find that quite ridiculous.

when i 1st heard the album I could really relate to it, i was going through some bad times in life and the songs made me feel so much better and helped me get through 2 years of school, I'd hate it if something came along and ruined that for me

American Idiot, the album, will always be American Idiot. It stands strong on its own two feet, whether it's a musical or a movie or am album. I can see your point, American Idiot got me through the latter part of the 2000's and I will always have it. It would be hard for anything to ruin it for me and I wasn't that thrilled with the musical when I first saw and wrote that I wasn't. But everytime I see it, I fall more in love with it. I don't know, the strength of the album itself for me can't be ruined.

I agree. I was never a massive fan of the musical in the first place.

I much rather just see Green Day perform.

What she said.

I really like it when the cast plays with them in performances etc.. but I feel as if it's just a little too much. Regarding performances, Green Day's almost never on their own again, and as much as I love the musical and love it when they do something together, I would also like to see Green Day do more tv performances on their own.

Although on the other side, they haven't done that much together. Only two or three things, I think? Plus that halftime Jets thing. I think I feel this way because the cast is doing a lot of performances everywhere, while Green Day isn't (well, they're doing a tour, which obviously is a lot of shows. But that's different ). I guess I would just like it if Green Day did more tv performance thingies on their own. That said, I still really like it when they do stuff together.

It's hard to decide what I actually think xD

ha ha yeah that would annoy me

I haven't seen the musical and I really haven't watched much of the promotion for it on tv, but I would imagine that Green Day is doing all these performances with the intention to promote the musical. They know more people will tune in to watch if it is green day with the cast of AI, rather than just the cast on thier own. Sure they'd probably do some performances to promote 21st century breakdown, but not as much. So would you rather watch green day with the cast of AI or no green day at all?

Posted

I think I like it both ways. Sure I'm a huge fan of the band and want to see them play A LOT but I love when they invite the cast to join them. I think the boys are just so excited and proud of the musical - something they might have thought about but certainly never expected to happen. I'm sure they love the cast and the new arrangements and want to share that beauty with everyone!

Besides, it's a wonderful way to show that punk and Broadway can go hand and hand and both be successful yet true to their roots and dreams.

I think the musical cast and green day are great at what they do. There performance at the grammys and the tony awards were brilliant. However I think the time has come for the musical to promote itself and for Green Day to just do what they do best and that is rock what ever venue they are at. Having the cast perform with them at a football match makes little to no sense to me. Also the choice of song for that performance is terrible, LOTAG is a weak song and they should choose something more lively.

I freely admit that seeing 'with the cast of American Idiot' is a turn-off for me.

I don't find the AI cast annoying, at all. I really want to see the musical and I love the album and I like the balance they've got going on. But that said, Green Day playing half time at a football game is is odd enough. How the hell does musical theatre come into that equation?! I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just think a lot of people there are going to be a bit confused is all. And there will also be the cynics who assume it's just for money. Honestly, I like the cast and the band and when they perform together but it does seem like they try and squeeze it in whenever is possible. Like if Green Day has a chance to promote, best get the musical in there, too. And that is a little bit off putting.

Posted

I agree with you too. The cast is getting more publicity than the band anyway this era, do they have to come along to events that Green Day could use as some self promotion?

You make it sound like the cast is "tagging" along. I'm positive Green Day is inviting the cast to come along with them. They like what they do, and enjoy being with them.

hum... I have an inkling some higher power may be pulling the strings here..

exactly how I feel cuz I just want to watch a fucking Green Day show without the cast performing over them.

Posted

I understand, too.

I'm not a huge fan of the musical and didn't buy the cd... I just downloaded when it's time on amazon as a single song...

but if i get the chance to get to america I'm sure going to see it. but I think the cast should stay on broadway. i think it's better when green day go to the show and perform with the cast on stage (because then it sure is an honour to the cast) than the cast coming along with them to all big events. that's a bit too much... they are not the superstars but green day.

Posted

I'd rather see Green Day perform alone not along with the cast. I've been getting pretty sick/annoyed of the cast actually. I mean they are being spoken everywhere. I think Green Day should perform alone in events like this and also same with awards shows. Though, I respect what's Green Day's choice. I'd just rather see the cast performing separately as in the musical.
