StateOfGrace Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 I need that hoodie in my life right now. How much would it cost? I LOVE it.
redbloodedmannequin Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 I am in lovelovelove with the first one!
Izzard Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 I really want to do something like this. How long did it take you to become good at it? I've never used a sewing machine in my life, but I really want to make cool shirts and jeans.
dawn71 Posted July 31, 2010 Author Posted July 31, 2010 I really want to do something like this. How long did it take you to become good at it? I've never used a sewing machine in my life, but I really want to make cool shirts and jeans. Before I started doing this I hadn't used a sewing machine either but once a friend showed me it was easy. it took about a month of many errors before I made something that was wearable. I am starting to do purses and next I was thinking about taking jeans and making them look distressed and adding GD patches and other embellishments on them. As soon as I get a good amount of inventory I am going to start my shop and an online shop. But if you want to do this its easy once you get the hang of it. I have always been creative. Before I started doing this I made jewelry. I made necklaces and earrings. I still make jewelry now but not as much.
whatsername..x Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 your designs are awesome!! If you do decide to sell internationally, please make sure the UK is on your list, I reckon your products would fly out!! please keep us updated with pics of your new Green Day designs and accessories, can't wait to see them! x
netty Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 why not pass your designs to the band and get their backing?
eastbayweirdo Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Sure no problem. I am bringing some with me to the concert. I am going to bring several styles and sizes. I will be easy to spot at the concert I'll be the one in the wheelchair and my wheelchair has lots of GD stickers on the back of it. I plan on getting there very early. Awesome! I'll try to find you. I think I'm getting there early too because I have to fly there. How much would one cost?
Lauren Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Yes it is legal because i bought the t-shirts and then custom designed them. Now if I had printed the shirts myself then that would not be legal. Since I purchased the shirts Green Day still receives their money for the t-shirt. What I do with it after I buy it is up to me because I own the shirt. As long as you're saying you LEGALLY bought Green Day t-shirts and did other things with them. However, just because someone else prints them (like cafe press, for example) if you use their images/logos and/or name, it's illegal without permission. Even if you alter the design, it's still them and it's still illegal.

Lauren Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 That's exactly what the post you quoted says she said she bought the shirts and someone else printed them. you could go on cafepress.com and put in your design and they print them and you buy them.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 she said she bought the shirts and someone else printed them. you could go on cafepress.com and put in your design and they print them and you buy them. However' date= just because someone else prints them (like cafe press, for example) if you use their images/logos and/or name, it's illegal without permission. underlined: no, she didn't say that. bold: she said that exact thing, just in different words. "Yes it is legal because i bought the t-shirts and then custom designed them. Now if I had printed the shirts myself then that would not be legal. Since I purchased the shirts Green Day still receives their money for the t-shirt. What I do with it after I buy it is up to me because I own the shirt." it's not really worth arguing about, though.
Lauren Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Where did she not say she bought the shirts and where did she not say she didn't print them? Technically using Cafepress IS buying shirts, IS custom making shirts, and is NOT printing them yourself. just wanted to make it clear. because i haven't seen some of those designs on shirts before, it looks like they were edited with a computer.

I doubt she'd print the shirts herself and then state that that is illegal. Okay, it might not literally say that, but I would count using Cafepress as pressing the shirt yourself. And the money definitely wouldn't go to Green Day if she used Cafepress. It is true I haven't seen some of the designs on shirts either, but then again, there are a LOT of shirts out there.
netty Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I think maybe you are over simplifying the legal side of things here. the bands name and any image associated with it is owned by them/warners. its one thing to sell on an old t-shirt or whatever on ebay to get a few extra pounds but to actually set up shop and make a profit is a whole other ball game. simply buying the t-shirt, where ever you got it from does not give you rights to use anything copyright protected as far as I am aware. one question I do have for you. you say you are buying green day t-shirts and whatever and then redesigning them and are thinking of selling them on again at $20 to $30? green day t-shirts aren`t exactly cheap and add to that the work involved, extra materials and whatever.... how can you still make a profit? especially selling at those prices?

Punk-tastic32 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 right, kind of like you can sell your old copy of Dookie on Ebay (but why would you?!), but you can't just burn people CDs and sell it to them, even if you bought the music. I agree with this one and I think that it makes sense. But then again, you have to be very careful. We all know how Warner and big companies like them love to screw people over such small things that they have trademark/rights to, even in the slightest way. (Sorry---Run on sentence much?)
Hayley1979 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I am trying my best to find a new line of work because last year I was medically retired from the Army because of an IED explosion that caused me to be wheelchair bound, I am hoping that I'll be able to open my own shop doing these custom shirts and other things like it. You are very impressive, trying to find something else (hope that doesnt sound patronising). I would definitely buy from you. I always get a bit disappointed by the merchandise at concerts cos the t shirts are so square and i wouldnt always wear styles like that. But you have taken them and made some of them very feminine, especially the first halter, which i love
dawn71 Posted August 2, 2010 Author Posted August 2, 2010 The shirts I use are licensed shirts, I don't get them printed and I don't buy bootlegged ones either. A lot of the time I use old shirts (from second hand store like goodwill etc.)and recycle them into something new and custom made. I can take an old shirt with a hole in it cut it up add materials and sew it into something all together different. Most people would just throw the shirt in the trash. Not only am I making something nice to wear I am recycling which is good for the environment. It is not illegal. I bought the shirt it is mine to do what I want with it. Do you think the stores that buy licensed Green Day shirts (like Hot Topic)sell them for exactly what they paid for them? No they don't, they make a profit otherwise how could they stay in business? Also I am not just selling the shirt I am selling the materials and work I put into it. I haven't even opened the shop yet. Thats why I came here for advice.
dawn71 Posted August 2, 2010 Author Posted August 2, 2010 why not pass your designs to the band and get their backing? How would I go about doing that? Awesome! I'll try to find you. I think I'm getting there early too because I have to fly there. How much would one cost? Are you going to be sitting in the pit section? I am trying to make as many as I can before the concert gets here. I plan to give them to fellow GDCers for FREE. I think it would be cool if a big group of us were all together in the pit wearing my custom made Greed Day shirts. I think we would really stand out in the crowd and hopefully the band would notice us.
netty Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 How would I go about doing that? you would probably need to contact warner reprise, probably their licensing department if you can find an email addy for them. or use a general addy for them and ask if they have one.
†...HAUSHINKA...† Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO OPEN YOUR LITTLE SHOP!!!! this stuff is pretty awesome! where we can find them now??
Fuzz Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I'm also a little unclear on the legality of this. If you were printing the shirts yourself, then yeah, wouldn't be legal. Since you're buying already made Green Day shirts and just re-designing them, then re-selling them - I don't know how that could be illegal, but then again, I don't work for Warner or whoever is in charge of merch.
netty Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 personnaly I think this is illegal. simply buying second hand clothing doesnt make it legal because reprise and the band have already had their slice of the profits. this is still going to be a business that will gain sales because of the use of a copywrite protected image of the band. I`m not a lawyer but I think it would be much better approaching the band and their management or the record company, getting a licence and taking the designs she has come up with by doing this and doing official merchandising. its one thing to do things like this for yourself....but making a profit out of it..even if it is a great idea and designs... its one of those dodgy ones. but we all know how warner reprise are about even videos on youtube where people arent making money from them.... so who knows how they would react to something like this.
Marlon_GD Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 It's a hard nut to crack... Imagine: I buy several copies of Dookie. I change the (now turned green) plastic box, so that it can hold two discs. The original CD is going back in, included with a DVD of several clips I downloaded from youtube (which is a lot of work and effort), cutting other people's camera work up into bits, add a nice menu and sound, and a Dookie DVD is done! I open up a store and put this Double-Disc Special Feature version of Dookie up for sale. Of course I really worked hard and I need to make some profit, so I'm asking a little bit more. Get the picture? (by the way, you were comparing the "selling it at a higher price" with shops like HotTopic... Well, they have a legal agreement with Warner. Besides, every organisation that sells items to make a living, has to pay taxes to the country's government every year for the material they sell... Because that's how the ball rolls in the world: you earn some (in a legal way), your country needs some too....) I'm a real and honest fan of your work, which is amazing;.. but this is (in my opinion) more illegal than legal
