Do you think that Green Day's image matters?

Image matters to an extent, because it is one of the first things you notice, but it doesn't get in the way of the music with Green Day.

I think it does matter. Sadly, if they were ugly, they wouldn't have so many fans. And I think that really sucks. It's like people become fans now because of the image and not the talent.

I must admit, I searched up green day because I saw a poster of billie and I thought he was good looking. But then I saw the video for "minority" and dear god the first thing that poped into my head was "Oh, wait he's ugly." But I didn't care anymore. I really loved the song so much that I started watching more videos. It's because their music caught my attention. If I would have cared about there looks I would have gone "Oh nevermind he's ugly, let me go look for a better looking band to get obsessed with" and for many months I saw their older videos and I thought he was ugly.

Then A.I came out and well it's no one's fault he got better looking....

I think Hermione was talking about in the earlier days when they dyed their hair

Yeah I just meant they've always dyed/styled their hair, it's nothing new. Their hair's always been cool and appealing to fans, whether it's blue and scraggy or black and straightened :D

Honestly, I don't care about the image that much. I'll still buy their records and still buy tickets to their show. They make awesome music, that's all I care about.

I'm not suggesting that what they look like doesn't make it easier to love them. But if they were as ass ugly as the Ramones, they would still be my favorite band, hands down.

Good point. The Ramones had a certain charisma though. Joey always reminds me of Howard Stern. They are real punk boy. They knew how to play like 5 power chords and basic drumming and just rocked out.

Haha Joey reminds me of Howard Stern too! Fuck yes! But we weren't talking about their playing style or hard they rocked out. We are just talking about their image.

I go for mainly music coz I remember when the boys were just shorts/jeans and a t-shirt...I think they look awesome now and yes I do copy their style but thats coz it makes me feel smart, I play gigs dressed in their stye coz lets face it it's damn epic...I do miss the old look though...

And Mr Billie Joe Armstrong is a very attractive man, but it drives me up the wall when people do the whole: "OMG Billy is so h0t, I wish he wazn't married coz he is fukin hawt!!!" those people can FOD

I wish I could say it doesn't matter, but it does. I mean to all of us massive fans it matters a lot less and regardless of what they look like they are always going to be my number one band. But if they were all f'ugly they probably wouldn't be popular now and I bet I wouldn't like them because I was twelve when I got into Green Day and knowing nothing about them, other than having heard one song, my little twelve year old brain would most probably have rejected three ugly old men. Seeing the absolute gorgeousness of BILLY JOELLLLLZZZ!!1 however, will have definitely influenced me becoming a fan.

Plus my bedroom would look nowhere near as nice if it was plastered with pictures of ugly men.

yes, image does matter these days. just watch music tv for a while. everyones dressed up in crazy outfits with huge hairdos surrounded by backup dancers and ladies in skimpy outfits. it makes you wonder what these people are trying to hid under all this glam, maybe their lack of any musical talent? i think so. in NO way am saying that green day does this though. they do have their little gimmicks but they all enhance the shows instead of drowning it out. i personally think they are all very handsome but i fell in love with their music before i even knew what they looked like. so many artists only seem to get reconized because of their music videos now a days. its like a lot of people (not saying all) are slowly losing their attention spans and need flashing lights, pretty colors, and sexy people to hold their attention. i however, cant diss any fangirls because i happen to be one. more power to us :)

I think their image matters. Billie is just so damn cute (yes, total man crush). Tre is so damn nuts. And Mike is so damn funny and nice. If they were all dicks, it wouldn't be as fun to love them.

you can be ugly and still be nice you know... haha! but yeah them being nice is way more of an important factor to me then how they look. i believe that billie had a dickish phase around warning (you can argue with me about that if you like, its pretty interesting) so that was a major turn off for me at that time. though those were also his chubby days... hmm i might have just contradicted myself... oh well! lets all just be happy that they are all now silly, jolly, pretty dudes.

Yeah, of course they do. But do the boys actually have the time to sit down and have other people fix them up when needs be? No. At least, not right now. When the 21st CB tour finishes in South America, THEN they'll have time to actually take the time to to dye their hair or whatever the fuck they want to do with it.

what do you mean by fix them up? they have people do their hair and take care on their wardrobe, what else is there? true all this is in their style of course but other people handle it. i think they all take their image pretty seriously. besides, well all know our little billie has a smidge of diva within him :P love you bill!

I guess image matters to some people, and not all teenage girls think Billie is hot, eg. i said i would rather watch Billie on rockband than these random people, and she asked if i like, and i said yes, and she started laughing! but i bet if they got spray tans and buff, she would like 'em

The look definitely matters. All great bands have a look, from The Beatles to The Clash. And in the case of The Beatles, reinvention defined them.

Green Day reinvent themselves look wise, but they have always had the same great personalities and the music just keeps getting better!

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH HAIRY BIKERS!

I have to say it matters. I'm not even gonna lie, I started liking Green Day because I thought they were hot (Billie especially, so wish this wasn't true  ). When I was a little 12 year old I totally thought they'd just be a quick little obsession I had, but I listened to their music and loved it, heard the messages they were giving, and started loving them for that. I really don't want people to judge me because of how I got into Green Day, because a lot of people who like how they look or got into them that way seem to be looked down upon as fans, sadly. I love them now for their music and the messages they put in their songs and even their own personalities, I'm a completely different person than who I would have been if I hadn't discovered them and if it wasn't for their "image" during the AI era, I (most likely, can't say for sure) wouldn't have been as interested in them.

Glad to say I know for sure that 20 or 30 years from now, when they're all old and wrinkly, I'll still love them, and I no longer care about what clothes they wear or what colour or style their hair is. :)

THIS! I agree with that. For me Billie is cute in one way. I like him, but for me he isnt THAT hot, is like mm idk I like athletic guys  .

But image really matter, of course. Ask Green Day I bet they know. Eyeliner rocks!!! hahaha

Well it depends

the physical image of each of the bandmates, no it doesn't matter(but it helps)

the image the band creates with their music

the most important thing ever

The image makes a lot. It's sad to see that girls who say shit like "Aah, I love Green Day. Well, I heard only 21Guns, but I love them. Their singer is soo hot. And I love Justin Bieber, too." I know kids like that and that really sucks. But there's still a lot of fans who loves Green Day just because the music they make, I'm proud to be one of them.

not to us because we already know who they are...

but from the business end of it I think they need to try to convey themselves as just fun, outgoing yet responsible guys...

This is a tricky one, for me overall it really shouldn't matter. But in many ways the society we live in almost demands a high standard of image and style for all people not just musicans.

I do believe in the case of Green Day the guys have adapted their style to suit their own tastes over the years, I doubt any of us dress exactly like we did in the 90s, styles change and people's tastes in style change. I could be wrong but I also think that if GD still dressed and looked like they did in the era of Dookie and Insomniac then the amount of teenage girl fans they have would be half what they have just now. I'm not saying that all young girls only like them because of how they look, but alot do!

Their style now has definately helped their popualrity grow for sure, the awesome thing about them is their is substance behind the pretty faces so if thats what got you into them in the first place, im sure after listeing to the music their image is then only part of why people love them so much

When I first saw Green Day I was all like 'they all look fucking weird'. But then I started to get into their music.

I guess image matters to a certain extent.

There are still some bands I listen to and I have no idea what they look like.

to me, their image doesn't matter.

i love their music, and how they look wouldn't change that one bit.

i wouldn't like them any less if they had man boobs and assless chaps.

i'll admit, it wouldn't be as great to look at, but their music would still have it's place in my heart.

i think it would have an effect on their popularity though.

people already judge them for their current image.

i can't imagine it would be any different if they changed it.

you can't please everyone, and someone is always going to have something negative to say.

it would be interesting to hear what remarks people came up with if they didn't have their current image...

No, their image shoudn't matter. Isn't their music whats most important? Who gives a flying fuck about what other people think of them, or what they look like.

Image shouldn't matter, but the sad truth is it does. I think a part of why Green Day was so big during American Idiot is because they all lost weight and were suddenly appearing in the teenie bopper magazines. That's the first time I had seen them, the Kid's Choice Awards  And then my first thought was, "Woa, that Billie Joe guy is hot"

:pinch: So ashamed!!!

^ Nothing wrong with thinking that . He is!

That's true, but it was the same in Dookie times. Just as people are attracted to their image/style now, thousands of people were attracted to Green Day in 1994 because of their crazy hair colours and cool punky clothes. And many girls thought Billie was cute. They've always looked cool and that's always been part of their appeal.

For sure the music's always been the main thing though, and it still is. Their image is just a part of the package along with everything else that makes a band what it is.

I agree it was the same back in the Dookie days coz in the 90s the crazy hair colours and Dickies trousers were the style of the time. I loved 90s fashion! lol
