AfterShock Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 When youre listening to music, you don't see the band. So no, it doesnt matter.
Harinezumi Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 The fact that they all look good is a nice bonus This. But I have to admit that I didn't like the way they looked when I first started listening to GD. So to me it doesn't really matter what they look like, but I guess like you said, it's a nice bonus... I find all three of them quite attractive now.
Dry_Ice Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Their image matters to pre-teens. That's all I know. All over my dashboard on Tumblr all I ever see if teenagers complaining about for i.e. Billie's teeth, how Tre never has any other clothes than the same stripped black button-up or as for Mike I don't see much pertaining to him lol. Or I hear, o0o0o guyliner is so hawt. I mean seriously? They dress that way for some god damn reason. I don't know why, it's a get-up I suppose. Their gear to rock this world. I really don't mind it. It's pretty cool, since it's very uniformed. But if they looked like what they did back in the 90s I still would loved them. As for their actual physical appearance, yes they are all good looking. But if they weren't, I'd still love them to fucking death.
theeulogy Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Well, Id' heard their song (BOBD) before I actually saw them.So I loved the music first. I found them more unusual that attractive I think. But than i was looking for their old stuff and saw some old pictures and my first impression was "OMG, what a dirty punks???" They're still rebels and I love it. Shmexy rebels
Silverlight Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Green Day are just epic, i loved most of their songs even before i saw them on videos, and when i did, i did think billie joe was pretty dam good lookin' and then when i watched some of their earlier stuff, the looked so young and different, kinda cute coz they were so young. I dont think their appearance matters that much to most real fans, but i think if when they first started out and had no money, so they couldnt buy new clothes and all that, they didnt care about their looks coz they couldnt really change it, now they have truck loads of cash, so why not use it to get what they never had in the begining? -sorry if my writing didnt make any scense, i get carried away with these kinda things
dawn71 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 IF is the biggest word in the dictionary. Green Day is Green Day and always will be. They have wore dresses on stage before and that didn't stop their fans from loving them. True Green Day fans will love them no matter what they wear. Green Day's MUSIC has helped me through some very dark times in my life, not the clothes they wear. I think that idea of them not being as popular if the looked or dresses different is absurd!! Green Day is Green Day you can if this and if that all you want but the fact remains that Green Day is all about the music and who gives a fuck what they wear?
Hanamay Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I think that idea of them not being as popular if the looked or dresses different is absurd!! I understand what you are saying but I think in terms of record sales popularity their image has made a definite impact, as I mentioned in my previous post.
Silverlight Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 i also think its a, sorta, good thing that they change their image when AI came around. i think this because in the 00", people would expect such an awesome band, to kinda neaten-up a-bit, get their own style and kinda care. And with that thing on green day not being the green day that the were at the beginning, just coz they changed their look and approach to their songs, doesnt make them any less awesome, it means the are great coz they are trying new things and breaking new grounds. *it takes a great band to have great albums/songs, yet to be an AWESOME band, it mean to be able stretch the limits and try new things* Who really cares about what they look like anyway? the fact the Billie became so good lookin was just a great addition to the awesomeness of Green Day. Adelaide? Wow, my best friend lives there. I've never met anyone else from their before. He says it's all suburban. Totally random, sorry. your right, that was pretty random and what does ur friend mean by suburban? im not taking offence to it or anything, its just ive never heard anyone use the word "suburban" before.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I hate that at the Wembley stage they said "We're not from fucking California, we're from England". If they did in fact say this, even though I know Green Day goes through every effort to make each show seem like it's their favorite and best, this was a little far and I am not even a person that believes in borders and to that end, I think he really alienated a bunch of his core fans that are spread out through the States. No, you are from California, and when you come to the States show and say how you're so happy to finally be home, and California is the most beautiful place on the tour, blah, blah, blah, it takes a little out of it. Yes, we are more spread out but the tix # show that we support Green Day more than any other single country by far and that one kind of stung. I see what you mean, but well....he doesn't mean it and I'm fairly sure the biggest part of the people know that too. He is probably really happy to be home, though. And even if, maybe that's just me, but does it really matter that much? And about the number of tickets/shows, that's just a bullshit argument EDIT: after reading the post below me: that because of that they should love you more or something, because they do more shows there they show they love you more. [end of edit] Your country is simply thirty plus times as big as other countries, fifteen times as big population etc. Yes, then you are going to get that you 'support' them more. If you look at the separate states or something, which would be a more fair comparison I guess, there isn't much if any difference. Plus, they could probably easily do more shows in Europe and still sell the tickets very well, they just don't do that for some reason. Don't mean to lash out at you but I have no idea how I could put it more friendly, haha. Green Day's MUSIC has helped me through some very dark times in my life, not the clothes they wear. Yeah, mental image of a black t-shirt with red tie without a person in it patting someone on the back!
Ellenkc Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I will say that they went through a decade of bad shows when they lost their mojo and got it back when AI hit. That said, you've kind of sparked a chord with this thought because right now I am fighting the desire to be a little frustrated towards them and something they did that affects their image to me anyway. I hate that at the Wembley stage they said "We're not from fucking California, we're from England". If they did in fact say this, even though I know Green Day goes through every effort to make each show seem like it's their favorite and best, this was a little far and I am not even a person that believes in borders and to that end, I think he really alienated a bunch of his core fans that are spread out through the States. Yes, we are more spread out but the tix # show that we support Green Day more than any other single country by far and that one kind of stung. Yeah he said that at Wembley but I wouldn't take it personally it's just the rockstar bravado act shining through, in Ireland he was saying he was from Ballyfermot and Wexford and made numerous comments about how superior Ireland is to England He's only messing around and obviously California is his home and he doesn't seem to want to change that, he could have moved to England at any point in the past 15 years but he's still holed up in Oakland and yeah I'm agreeing with the post above me on the ticket #'s, the States is massive and you get full tours of a singular country, no other country gets that treatment for any band really. U2's Irish and they do a shitload more US shows than Irish ones and I'm betting that their favorite concert probably wouldn't be Ireland either. Bottom line it's just a comment to rally up the crowd a bit, don't take it too seriously
Hermione Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 ^Yeah exactly. He was mentioning England at every opportunity, to a ridiculous extent - in Give Me Novacaine "England's always better than here" . It's just a bit of fun to get the crowd going, a tongue-in-cheek take off of how bands always shout out whatever place they're playing. He's goes way over-the-top with it deliberately because it's funny.

Y'know how interviewers always ask bands 'do you have a special love/connection/whatever for country blah where you are right now?', and you see that moment where the band is trying to come up with something to please the puppy-dog eyes looking at them, lol? I'd be vastly amused to hear someone go 'no, it's a shithole, but what are you gonna do?'
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 Yeah - in Paris it was like that too. He kept shouting "Pareeeeee" (with this immense accent, too ) every chance he could possible get, as well as "merceee, merceee beaucoooooh".
Bastard of 1967 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 I hate that at the Wembley stage they said "We're not from fucking California, we're from England". He did the same thing at Milton Keyes back on the AI tour and it's immortalized now in BIAB... "England is the home of Green Day from now on", yada yada. Sure, it plays to the crowd and gets a rise out of them (while hopefully not pissing off their non-UK fans who are all equally-hopefully taking it with a grain of salt or less), but yeah I do wish he'd give that line a rest. He has so many other ways in his arsenal to energize a crowd, he doesn't need to trash-talk his hometown (especially not when he otherwise seems to love it as much as he does -- see 21CB Fox Theater show in April '09) anymore to accomplish that.
cabot_girl Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 I just miss the boys when they wore t-shirts, old pants and did n care about their hair. And NO eyeliner. Billie looks so good with short hair, and no make-up. And regular clothes. But I've been a fan half my life, followed them since 95...
Coffee409 Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 As an old school fan, I couldn't give less of a shit what they are wearing or if Billie is sporting his guy-liner, or what patches he has on his shirt etc... I have, and will ALWAYS love their music for what it is above all else.
Mato Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 As an old school fan, I couldn't give less of a shit what they are wearing or if Billie is sporting his guy-liner, or what patches he has on his shirt etc... I have, and will ALWAYS love their music for what it is above all else. exactly
Dylan. Posted July 7, 2010 Posted July 7, 2010 Green Day is always going to have people wanting them to be who they aren't. I like defending their honor way more than everybody in the whole damn world fucking loving them for the wrong reasons. In the words of Kurt Cobain, "I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not."
Hermione Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I just miss the boys when they wore t-shirts, old pants and did n care about their hair. And NO eyeliner. Billie looks so good with short hair, and no make-up. And regular clothes. But I've been a fan half my life, followed them since 95... They've always liked a bit of eyeliner now and again And they used to dye their hair all kinds of colours - that takes time and effort . They've always looked cool and that's always been part of their appeal. As they've grown older and fashion trends have changed, their style's changed just like most people's style changes throughout their life. But that doesn't matter. What matter's is that they're wearing what they want to wear - I'd hate for them to change the way they dress just to please fans. If they're happy dressing the way they do, what does it matter?
Mar Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I certainly do think that their image matters, both in their mainstream success and in the type of fans they attract. (I don't mean to sound condescending in saying this) I think younger girls become interested in Billie. Guys become interested in Billie's lyrics, especially with their older songs. The media is interested in Tre's craziness, their "politics" (I use that term loosely, because I think the political tone of their music is often overstated in the media, I think), their personal lives, especially Billie's, since it's kind of uncommon for a musician marriage to last so long (fans are pretty interested in this stuff too) as well as how they can stay "normal" in Oakland or whatnot. I think their music certainly speaks for itself, and that's why I love them in the first place, but I don't think these factors of their image are irrelevant, nor do they hurt their popularity. (Note, I took the question to mean their overall persona, not just physical appearance.)
Hanamay Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 And they used to dye their hair all kinds of colours - that takes time and effort . Exactly how I feel Also, it makes me laugh mind when you see these "punk" guys with their painted leather jackets and studs and patches and awesome, crazy hair and they're all like 'I don't give a fuck'..except they must take a long, long time on their personal appearance. But this isn't really relevant, sorry! I certainly do think that their image matters, both in their mainstream success and in the type of fans they attract. (I don't mean to sound condescending in saying this) I think younger girls become interested in Billie. Guys become interested in Billie's lyrics, especially with their older songs. Well said! Yeah I think it's undeniable that their general persona, image and the way they portray themselves has had an effect on their popularity with regard to sales and media coverage. And I'm not going to lie and I'll admit that their image had an effect on me. Although I first heard Green Day before I saw them and that's what made me want to hear more (Desensitised came free with a Kerrang Cd). Naturally, I then checked out videos of them and I thought they were pretty hot, attractive guys and this made me more interested. It's shameful but it's the truth! Now their image doesn't make a difference because I love and know their music but at the beginning it did make a difference as it lead to me wanting to listen to them more and things. Sorry if that makes me sound like a teeny girl but whatever.
mandajane Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 They look classier now... punk chic ! lol seriously i still wonder how billie doesnt die of heat stroke when hes wearing long sleeve shirts and tight pants. i get hot as hell in the pit in a t shirt and shorts!!! i noticed tre wearing shorts at some show lately... which makes a lot more sense...and about dyeing their hair different colors taking time and effort....pretty sure they can have people do it for them at the drop of a hat if they wish.
Hanamay Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 land about dyeing their hair different colors taking time and effort....pretty sure they can have people do it for them at the drop of a hat if they wish. I think Hermione was talking about in the earlier days when they dyed their hair
Jaymee!! Yeah, of course they do. But do the boys actually have the time to sit down and have other people fix them up when needs be? No. At least, not right now. When the 21st CB tour finishes in South America, THEN they'll have time to actually take the time to to dye their hair or whatever the fuck they want to do with it.
