When I Come Around

My favorite lines - "I'm just roaming for the moment - sleazin' my back yard..." It's simple but clever - like he's saying, I'm just looking at what's out there, so just stop yer cryin' or figure out what the hell you want. I heard you were dumping my ass anyway. I don't need someone to tell me I'm a loser; I know it already.

J'net, I am not sure what your favorite line is, but I'm gonna assume it's "Make sure you do it wise" because of the italics. Very cool lyric, btw.

Cheryl - that's MY favorite line, too - not because I think it's the most meaningful line in the song - I just LOVE the slimy, sleaziness of it! So many people behave in this way, but how many of them just honestly say it? I also really love singing this line with the band - getting the rhythm of it just right and letting all my worst character traits have a moment of ascendancy !

Oh, that's so funny!! I just assumed the other. The rhythm of those lines takes some getting used to, and it took me a few times in the beginning to get the words right. I love how they flow into each other tho - and I know exactly what you mean. Way back in the beginning of my GD love affair, I wrote those lines somewhere (I jot down GD lyrics in whatever place when I feel the urge to, lol.) and Bren happened to see them - he asked me accusingly, 'What's that supposed to mean?!" So, I guess it does imply just what it says, but I just liked the lyric - I don't go sleezin' my backyard or anywhere really, lol.

I do like this song for its simple honesty. It doesn't really have the double meaning thing going on too much - which maybe is why it's not a thought-provoking fave of mine - but I like it for different reasons.

I think this is such a classic song. I remember it being played a lot back in....95' I think they released it as a single, and here, 15 years later it means more to me and I appreciate it in a way I didn't then. It has such a great sound to it, I think it will be just as beloved (at least by fans like me) in another 15 years. Classic and in my opinion, maybe the best song on Dookie.

When i Come Around is a wonderful song, I love the way Billie especially given the audience during this number and so I love the energy of the song!. Dookie is an album you just can not avoid when you hear Green Day just as this song (: love it.

ohh i love this song <3

One of my absolute favorites. The last show I went to when Billie sang: "Dry your whining eyes..." he held his hand out to me and it killed me.

Oh God, my ringtone

I remember hearing this in Dublin in October, and it was at that moment I realized "Holy shit... I love this song!!" And hearing it last Wednesday was unreal.

Not to mention

So go do what you like

I'm having sex with Mike

My favourite line....

I'm a loser and a user so I don't need no accuser

To try and slag me down because I know you're right.

I love this song <3 It's one of my favourite GD songs.

It's a great song to hear live.

It was my alarm tone the day I went to see Green Day last year

You may find out that your selfdoubt means nothing

Was ever there

Make sure you do it wise is a good line. I''m having sex with Mike at Wembley, even better :D

hahaha Hermione speaks the truth.

And I forgot to respond to your comment about the line, "Make sure you do it wise." I italicized that line because the lyric was changed during all the shows I saw this tour .

Finally got to read this thread (I was sort of discouraged it already had three pages when I got back home ).

This song isn't a specific favourite of mine, but I like it. And it's got some really nice lines.

"You may find out that your self-doubt means nothing was ever there

You can't go forcing something if it's just not right"

I really like that, especially the last line.

and like I posted in above mentioned other thread, I think this song is very open to interpretation. I like that in songs

Totally agree with you. Actually, I don't agree with this interpretation of the song necessarily. I actually still think it's about a groupie, or one in general. I think the title lyrics of "You'll know where I'll be found, when I come around", means coupled with all the other lyrics, "hey, fuck off and quit bugging me with all your shit. You know where I'll be when I get there".

That said, I dig that person's interpretation of the song, and I would never dare call an interpretation of poetry (which pretty much all of Billie's lyrics are), truth.

Damn, you're a pretty smart 16yo. Jeez. ;)

EDIT: BTW, there is a discussion about this song pinned by J'net right now. We should probably move this dissection of the song over there. See how good I am getting at proper board edict. :holds gun to head: :D

(I'm just going to reply to this in this thread. I'm a bit behind on everything )

Yeah, that fits too. I still see it more friendly. In a way like 'right now I don't like you so please go away, [but because of our history/relationship (platonic of otherwise)], when I have come around, you know where to find me'. Which basically the chorus with the rest of the lyrics taken in (what'sthewordagain?). The whole song just has a general feeling to me like right now Billie doesn't like the person, but that's just a temporary thing and he'll get over it, and when that happens, the person knows where he can find him.

haha, I'll take that as a compliment? xD

You're becoming a favorite poster of mine quickly (Although, it's the first line that intrigues me more). You definitely nailed it as far as I'm concerned with the best line in the song. I love that line.

"You cant go forcing something if it's just not right" is just a truism any way you slice it. However, how it fits in the song, is a question to be toyed with.

The "You may find that your self-doubt means nothing was ever there" is a classic Billie Joe lyric. Just phenomenal. One of his best lines. It's the "Rage and Love" line of Dookie if you ask me. No, that would be "When masturbation lost its fun youre...." but still a great line.

BTW. I only just picked up on the fact that I referenced R&L to you daughter. But I digress. That line I've never, after all these years, quite settled on. The self doubt? Is it in insecurity about him not being around? Does he mean that that self doubt is misplaced because you're just gonna find out that "nothing was ever there". Is "nothing ever there" because of the "self doubt"?

I DONT FUCKING KNOW. Help.

Yeah, the first line is more intriguing...but I like the second so much because it's just so damn true and can be applied to so many situations. Whether it fits in the song is of less importance

Yeah.....it's a great line. Kind of put me down to earth when I first really read/heard it. Although with that line I also can't quite figure out where or why it's in the song.

I feel as if that pair of lines is like some sort of realization, conclusion at the end of the song. Not 'you' as in talking to someone, but 'you' in the general sense, maybe even about himself. An epiphany even, perhaps.

And then THAT kind of confuses me, because it doesn't fit with what I thought about the song anymore (I'm typing this as while thinking of it, sorry if it doesn't make a lot of sense). Because that part is like, both lines are seriously doubting the relationship between the singer and the person he's singing about.* And that clashes with 'cause you know where I'll be found when I come around'. Hmmmmmmmmmm 502_scratching_chin.gif

* You may find out that your self-doubt means nothing was ever there : He's doubting the relationship, which could be called self-doubt since he is in said relationship. He thinks (fears?) nothing was ever there, because he's doubting the relationship.

You can't go forcing something if it's just not right : He doesn't know anymore if the relationship is right, so he doesn't want to force it. Actually, that does fit with the song. He needs some time off, he needs a break, so he can come around; that was he won't force it.

I have yet to figure this whole thing out, haha.

How now brown cow. Love the song, but like most songs from Dookie, I'm a little worn on it.

Still, a great song for the ages.

Posted this in another thread about something and it is definitely more appropriate here. This I nabbed from someone's interpretation of the song that I really liked. THIS ISN'T MINE.

Have a read.

Wow. Really, really good stuff there. Where'd you find that/do you know who the original poster was?

Its just idk.....such a melodical song and everytime i listen to the guitar at the beginning im blown away by it over and over again.

Here is where I pulled it from. I read it ages ago but just typed in a couple key words I remembered to find the article in it's entirery, of which I did not post all. If you would like to read the author's interpretation from the source, here ya go.

It's a great read that starts with ""When I Come Around" is a love song. It's a love song for people who think that love is bullshit. Don't believe me? Try taking a trip back in time to the early 1990s…"

Much thanks. I meant to read more of these.

Thanks for the link -- this blogger has some really great analyses of (unfortunately just) a few other Green Day songs as well. Hope he/she writes more -- or even joins us here!

When i come around is like.. my favourite song. :) Easy to play on guitar and just a song for when i feel like walking around town ;)

Sometimes the way I take this song is the band talking to their fans. I don't know, it's just comforting song from the band that kind of make you feel like everything will be alright in the long run.

It's a wonderful choice and an amazing song.

I like this song it is very soothing or something and the music video is cool, it does make you want to walk around bart with your hands in your pockets lip synching the words ,,.. or at least i think of that everytime i am in Bart .

So go do what you like, make sure you do it wise....

Just such a line......

One of my favourites :) just love it

WICA is probably one of my favorite songs on Dookie, besides She.

There's just a hidden emotion to it, I feel. I really can't explain it. But it's one of their 'thicker' songs. And I still enjoy this song to this day. Plus the music video is really simple. I watch this music video the most out of their collection.
