Just thought it was weird. I don't know exactly what they look like, unfortunately. I think some of those people were the "VIP" winners, which basically meant you could stand there, I guess. I walked up about five minutes before they performed.

I wonder if Billie originally wrote 21 Guns with a backing ensemble specifically in mind? When I hear the cast perform this -- whether live at the show or for their various media and awards show appearances, the harmonies and the ensemble add another layer of depth to the song that just rips my heart out. There's like this "extra level" of emotional depth that's not there in the 21CB album cut that I think elevates the "exhausted after a long, drawn-out, worthless battle" theme in the song to a completely new level....and it just nails me every damn time I listen to it.

Well, when Michael first approached Billie Joe about the musical, it was back in 2007 and Billie later introduced samples of the songs from 21CB so the fact that the musical was already in the works might have led to Billie having the ensemble backing in mind later. Just a thought.
