or maybe Memphis was actually better?

chill out people. Green Day had a great success with their first Broadway show, but all these other guys are pros of the business. I have not seen either shows so I cannot deduce what performance is actually better, but it is what it is. They're lucky enough to even be at the Tony Awards.

Yeah. They're still seen as interlopers in the business. And as nearly every review said, it lacks a story and dialogue. No matter how powerful and emotional the performances are, it needed a complete package, which, and I don't know anything about Memphis, but Memphis probably had.

I still want to see American Idiot, Tony or not. This helped its exposure, even though it didn't win.

I thought they would win also ... still I'm proud of them... they were nominated and this is the first time in history that a punk band's ever been nominated for an award at the tony's ... I think they'll get it eventually... but it's still too controversial maybe for traditional theater goers to fully grasp.... their like Oh! my god... punk's invaded broadway :runaround: JFC ( Jesus F-ing Christ)

Regarding the performance, it was so-so. The lights and the fact that Alysha randomly came down on the harness were the only parts that bugged me. And, maybe it's just me being a moody ass, but the whole thing seemed messy to me.

I really did not like "idiet"

As much as I love Green Day, I also love and respect theater. American Idiot is a great musical, but it is by far not the best musical. It wouldn't have been fair for it to win a Tony, because if it did, it would have been because Green Day is behind it.

That being said, I personally loved American Idiot. I think the staging, scoring, and talent is phenomenal. It also acts as the culmination of my youth and it brings together two of my favorite worlds (theater and rock). If I were holding an awards ceremony, I would give it best musical. However, for the Broadway League to do so is not in good taste.

You have to think of seeing it on a stage. The cameras focusing on certain things does make it look very different than it was intended to be. The choreography is more informal than most musicals though.

just adding to what you said, American Idiot is not your typical broadway experience. Although i have not seen Memphis, it had the typical happy upbeat showtunes that most theater goers and probably the Tony critics love.

Yeah, that's a good point. The camera angles kept switching back and forth very quickly.

It's just the beginning for us west-coasterners. I really wasn't expecting AI to win the big award though, I know it also got slammed a lot... infact a dj on the local radio station over here slammed it big time the other day.

Yeah going from stage to screen is always so weird. It's so hard to do it well.

Thats why musical movies always freak me out.

Haha, just watched the opening performance by the cast and band.

John Gallagher Jr is too adorable, especially when he introduced the band.

Unless it closes and is then revived, it can't be nominated again :( but I do hope it gets more respect with age.

Thank you.

I don't like movie musicals, but I don't mind seeing a musical on stage, so I agree with you. There's a certain amount of magic missing when you watch something on TV, and I think that was the case.
