Ila Reto Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 i've been in a big Paper Lanterns mood lately, "i do not mind if all i am is just a friend to you, but all i want to know right now is if you think about me too" such simple yet powerful lyrics in that one line. i havent listened to the album in quite a while, and the one song i seem to miss the most is The One i Want i just LOVEEEE the vocals in the first few lines! same with Road to Acceptance. when i was younger i didnt quite get it, but now that im older it suddenly clicks. and hearing it live, from this short, scruffy, snot-nosed punk, the power just knocks me right over! its like "woah! vocals!!" and also i think thats cool that even though its not stuff like Minority or Before the Lobotomy, it definately is the roots of those type of songs. <3 <3

Malleus Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 Listening to it now. Love it. My favorite song is 409 In Your Coffeemaker.
green day is Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I love it. However, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was not their first album. 39/Smooth was. Not many people know this. You see, this is a compilation of 39/Smooth, the 1,000 Hours EP, and the Slappy EP (with "I Wanna be Alone" on some punk compilation thing). Should the title of this thread not be changed to "39/Smooth" ??

For Lack of a Better Word Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I love the fact that it was released when they were barely adults, I think it's so good in that respect. Like, I can't even begin to imagine writing lyrics like that when I was 16 or 17. Jeez, and that guitar riff from I Want To Be Alone is a lot more complex than stuff from Dookie and Insomniac. Exactly what I'm always thinking when I listen to the album or watch them play live at Pinole or another one of those early gigs. Like, sometimes some local bands would play at my old high school, but I can't imagine any of them bringing an entire set of kickass songs they'd actually written themselves. Some of my favourites have to be 16, At the Library, 409, I Was There and Only Of You. The energy in most of these songs is just so freaking contagious!
Comedy & Tragedy Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I think I can safely say, that out of all the Green Day albums out there, it's the songs off this one that get stuck in my head the most They're just so catchy, and brilliant! i've been in a big Paper Lanterns mood lately, "i do not mind if all i am is just a friend to you, but all i want to know right now is if you think about me too" such simple yet powerful lyrics in that one line. That line is one of the best stand-out lines for me
Isabel Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 my favourite album atm i was there! you and me are going to be great friends
minorty13 Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 I love how angst-y this album is! It's really amazing to listen to music that was written when Billie was about my age and be able to relate to everything he's saying even though most of the songs were written well before I was born Just another example: Green Day is timeless whether you're Gen. X or a Baby Boomer (in my opinion that is)
germackpaccone Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Love this album, not my favorite but comes close, i remember hearing it for the first time and i'm like wow it doesn't suck like most of some other band's first albums.
tommy_huggs Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Love this album! Found it so easy to relate to when I was 14-17. Great songs. Paper lanterns, the one that I want are probs my favourites
dookiak Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 It's this album's fault, I do believe, that I am a fanatic. When I got this, Dookie had been out for awhile, which was amazing, and then I started listening to this and Kerplunk. 2000 Light Years Away was the first GD song I had ever heard (a friend's band had played it live), and it got me started with them. From Christie Road to Dominated Love Slave, I was loving what Kerplunk had to offer, but 1039 was just amazing. Nearly every track. I'd start with one and think it was the best, before I fell in love with another. I was 10-11 years old and just started growing up and evolving with the band. It took me a lot longer to get into Insomniac when it came out, I just wasn't jaded (yet ha!) with the world at 11-12 years old and couldn't relate lyrically, but 1039 had me. I was starting to daydream about love and being a romantic, and this album was there with me. By the time Nimrod was released, I was a full on Idiot (the fan club back then was the Idiot Club too.. but it was mail only "Send us $20 and BAM! You're an idiot!" for a shirt, stickers, and occasional letter from the band). As you can see from my above post, I could go on similarly for nearly ever album. (aside from 1039 and Kerplunk) I was a fan from the launch of every album and anticipated it, and can think back to my life, where I was at (personally, emotionally, etc) and can relate their albums to my life and what it meant to me. I love all of the albums.
Sharmellow Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I've heard that many people don't care about this album very much, and I don't understand why. Their sound in this album is fresh and energetic, even with the terrible quality of the sounds. Dry Ice has one of their best "guitar solos", and At The Library and Disappearing Boy are fucking amazing songs. This is one of the most underrated Green Day albums, if not "THE" most.
Maddy. Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I don't care too much for this album. I can't stand his whiny, nasal voice. D: But some days I do get the urge to stick the CD in the stereo and listen to it all the way through.
Kayfabe Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 This is a great album to listen to when you're 'in love' and it's unrequited! I love the album though, it's great to go back to after all that they have gone on to since. Totally. The 'here we go again' of pasalaqua is so true. as in here we go again, i've started liking someone again. and then when you add it on to the rest of the line it's still true. just when you think you've finally stopped thinking about them, infatuation touches you and you keep on thinking about them.
marta_gs Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 my favourites: Paper Lanterns, Going To Pasalacqua, Dry Ice, I Want To Be Alone, Only Of You.... oh well, LOVE this album
LetItBeHappy Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 all I want to know right now is if you think about me too. So when are all my troubles gonna end? I'm understanding now that we're only friends, to this day I'm asking why I still think about you Couldn't relate more... I HAVE TO DO THIS EFFING PHONE CALL, I DON'T HAVE THE GUTS AND I CAN'T FIND ANY SONG THAT HELPS EDIT: Finally got to call... AND HIS PHONE IS OFF. I think I'm gonna pop
Ally Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 all I want to know right now is if you think about me too. So when are all my troubles gonna end? I'm understanding now that we're only friends, to this day I'm asking why I still think about you that bit always reminds me of my ex, cos always wonder if he thinks about me cos i am always thinking about him
Heather! Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 For the last week or so I've had 1,039 on constant repeat. Right now I can really relate to all of the love songs Billie wrote as a teen, heh.
Prisca Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Man I was just watching some Youtube videos when they played on Foreign Foods Day in their high school and I watched LOTAG and holy shit. Major change! obvious, i know but who at their school would've thought they would become huge? Ya know? it's still something i can't wrap my head around so easily. I love this album though. My class is starting to read The Catcher in The Rye and I sorta want to recommend 'Who Wrote Holden Caufield?' to my teacher. I dunno though.

You could discuss the lyrics.
Ila Reto Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I don't care too much for this album. I can't stand his whiny, nasal voice. D: lol thats why i love it so much! muy adorable! that voice kills me every time and knowing that it comes from a guy only a year older than me is, for a lack of a better word, hot as hell. lol (The One I Want = ) and the funniest part is, his voice back then was deeper than it is now xD
