Nimrod: is according to the Book of Genesis, a great-grandson of Noah and the king of Shinar. He is depicted in the Bible as both a man of power in the earth and mighty hunter. He also figures in many legends and folktales outside the Bible. Extra-Biblical traditions associating him with the Tower of Babel led to a darkening of his reputation. Several Mesopotamian ruins were given Nimrod's name by 8th century Arabs.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that thats not the same Nimrod as on the Green Day album! It's funny because although Nimrod is a 'might hunter' the other definition is a 'slow-witted person.' Quite contrasting there...

Someone said about the portraits on the cover, they are Dwight Eisenhower and Harry S Truman. Dwight was a general in the army and the 34th president of the USA and Truman was the 33rd.

It does! Nimrod was a person in the Bible who was a "mighty hunter". Then in an old Bugs Bunny cartoon, Bugs called the hunter Elmer Fudd a nimrod in a totally sarcastic way, as an insult. Since that cartoon was shown, in addition to the original meaning the word nimrod has been an insult, meaning a dweeb/nerd/loser etc. That's the meaning Green Day was going for.

Thanks for that! I've always wondered what the connection between the Bible Nimrod and the insult nimrod was.

I'm thinking the one on the left is Eisenhower. Comparing the ears to this picture of Eisenhower.

I only know because of Green Day articles explaining it :D

scratch that.

this one (also of Eisenhower) matches more with the right one. =/

edit: final opinion: the one on the right is Truman (look at this picture of him, it's definitely the one on the right), left is Eisenhower.

oh and doesn't the word Nimrod appear in The Bible, representative of something?

according to the book of genesis, nimrod was a great grandson of noah and a mighty and clever king, who thought that he was able to cheat God. sorry i dont know anyhting more...

Actually, the first known use of "nimrod" as an insult was by Bugs Bunny about Elmer Fudd. Elmer screwed up once again, and Bugs shook his head and said, "Poor little Nimrod".

well..

the songs on the album Nimrod are pretty much describing the fuck ups and mistakes that Billie has made in the past years or so. They are songs of his apathy, bitterness, exhaustion, tension, hatred and love

so..

the album front and back covers are old yearbook photos I'd say from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. images of a time when there was a "perfect family" everyone was clean cut, proper, and 100% American

and because Billie doesn't feel like that kind of person, the artist slapped a big yellow grungy NIMROD over their faces

it's satirical and angsty and a reaction to everything negative that happened in their lives at that time

Wow can you say Green Day expert.
