This isnt one of my favorite songs, although I like singing along with it. I guess theres something about it thats too close to the reality we live in these days and makes me uncomfortable. Im not saying all good music should make me feel comfortable just that I have a hard time enjoying this one when I think too much about it.

I also have difficulty with this one, J'net. Even Billie Joe's darker writings are usually put to more up-beat or "poppy" music that sucks you in whether or not you want it to...but not this one. Especially after the events in Times Square a few days ago, the lyrics (as you noted) hit much, much too close to reality -- even when we know that a literal interpretation isn't necessarily what Billie intended here. By way of comparison/contrast, I think "Horseshoes & Handgrenades" says a lot of the same things but less "graphically" if I'm making any sense at all.

To end on a positive note: the harmonies at "No one is getting out alive" and "So close your eyes" are some of the best you'll hear the boys hit.

It's definitely one of my favorite songs off Dookie. I could never get sick of listening to it.

I like these lines the best:

"Do you ever think back to another time?

Did it bring you so down that you thought you lost your mind?"

I had this weird thought this morning...the first verse and part of the chorus really fits with taking a hostage or a terroristic attack. "I'm taking all you down with me / explosives duct taped to my spine, nothing's gonna change my mind / I won't listen to anyone's last words / there's nothing left for you to say, soon you'll be dead anyway / well no one here is getting out alive (/ this time I really lost my mind and I don't care / so close your eyes and kiss yourself goodbye)"

It was just a thought, about this song, no harm in posting it, I guess...

and then I had this fucking weird thought about Green Day doing that at/after a concert and I have no idea what triggered that (well of course I do, but I have no idea why my mind would even think of that)
