Brian Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 for the longest time i thought the first line of the song was Chicken.
colormestoopid Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 AH YES MY FAVORITE SONG FROM DOOKIE for the longest time i thought the first line of the song was Chicken. lmfao.
mandajane Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 love this song. this song helped me a lot through high school.
Hermione Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 The lyrics of this song are just incredible. Especially this part Do you ever think back to another time? Did it bring you so down that you thought you lost your mind? Do you ever want to lead a long trail of destruction And mow down any BULLSHIT that confronts you? Do you ever build up all the small things in your head To make one problem that adds up to NOTHING. It's everything I love about Green Day's lyrics. They express the point SO perfectly, I hear them and it's like "Yes! That's exactly it!". They get right at the root of it in such an unflinching way. That they can do that with such a dark, difficult subject is amazing to me. The music too, it has this menacing quality that intensifies that feeling of everything building up around you. Love the song.
Supermodel*Robot Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I adore this song. It's pure teenager. I like to get rowdy to it when I'm pissed off, thrashing about alone in my bedroom. Okay, it's not as scary as it sounds.
darenmay Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 this is definitely one of my dookie favorites. the lyrics are amazing. "this time i've really lost my mind and i don't care." ___ ps. i just noticed the sound does not match the video on the first post. maybe it isn;t really the video.
ANJI Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Yay love this song!! One of my favourites from Dookie!

Love the song. Ohh I love that part the most too. I think it has the main point of this song, like the sense of helplessness and desperation is just built up in other parts and in this one he just throws it all away (?). Also, I think they couldn't have chosen better title for it. I don't know why but it always makes me smile when I listen to this song. First, you can take it more literally, refering to an explosion mentioned in the lyrics, but also more ironically. He's obviously not having fun, so it's very sarcastic.
Christina. Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 "Do you ever build up all the small things in your head To make one problem that adds up to nothing" This line is basically what got me through the first half of this year. Having a Blast holds a special place. There's something about it that makes me feel completely alone but at the same time makes me feel okay about it. Such a great song.
Homicidal_llama Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Love this song. Funny story; when I listened to Dookie again recently by downloading it off iTunes I accidently forgot to put Burnout on for some reason. From that point on I was under the impression that Having a Blast was the opening track and I can see it working that way too. Great track though. The lyrics are spot on.
The Breakdown Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Love this song. Especially the bridge. Love playing along with it.

I think this is probs my favourite song off Dookie
DecanoLP Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Really great song. The crowd in the video is insane
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 If I'm honest, this song just doesn't spark my interest when I'm listening to music, so I never really paid attention to it or the lyrics. I just properly read through the lyrics for the first time, with the intention of really reading and seeing them, and they're just great. Hermoine already explained that wonderfully, so I'm just gonna agree with that. But despite lyrics, I don't think this song will ever be up in my favourite songs. I just don't really like the sound of it (although it fits the lyrics quite perfectly. I guess that's why I'm not too fond of it, it's a feeling I don't like at all). But that video ... I don't know what's up with it, but it isn't in synch at all, like, not just a second off, it doesn't make sense at all. And where the hell does that endless stream of stagedivers come from for the longest time i thought the first line of the song was Chicken. that's great
Ila Reto Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 oh my gosh, this is my favorite song from the album <3 story time! it was my final year at my dance studio. the people there were rude, inconsiderate, and i dreaded going to dance practise every week (i still remember listening to 39/smooth in the car to calm me down before i'd have to go in). ANYWAY long story short, i remember the final performance of the year, and Having a Blast sums up my feelings completely: after hearing that song, i had this grand scheme of when all the dancers were on stage for the finalie, i'd collapse the stage right from underneath them. they were the closest thing to friend i had, but they treated me like shit. my final year there was hell and im so happy to be out of there. "no one here is getting out alive, this time i've really lost my mind and i dont care. so close your eyes and kiss yourself goodbye and think about the times we've spent and what they've meant ...to me its nothing." Then again when i was 86ed from band, these people were the best friends i'd ever had. we were this one huge familyt but then all of a sudden they ditched me and i left for good. i was depressed for months, these people at the time meant the world to me, and i was completely lost without them. and now i look back and think, screw you all, im better off without you. still, i play with the idea of revenge even now 2 years later. "im losing all my happyness, the happyness you pinned on me, the loneyness still comforts me my anger dwells inside of me, im taking it all out on you, and all the shit you put me through."
klytaemnestra Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 this is the first song off dookie that i loved. it's not my favourite off that album anymore, but it's still an amazing song. "i'm taking it all out on you, for all the shit you put me through."
J'net Posted April 29, 2010 Author Posted April 29, 2010 But that video ... I don't know what's up with it, but it isn't in synch at all, like, not just a second off, it doesn't make sense at all. And where the hell does that endless stream of stagedivers come from Keep in mind that video is pretty old. The quality issues, especially with the synching of the sound, aren't surprising when you remember that it was probably recorded on one of those little mini-cassette tapes or something that they used back then and then later converted to digital format.
Maura99 Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Great song...! Loved it from the first time I ever listened to it. Also: brilliant choice of title.

Oh yeah, I know that, but I just noticed it. And that at points it just jumps or something.
Ally Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Love Having A Blast. By far my fave from dookie, possibly my fave GD song overall...if not its second fave. "Do you ever think back, to another time? Does it bring you so down that you thought you lost your mind" just means so much to me
Kayfabe Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 When I first got dookie this was one of my faves. Do you ever think back to another time? Does it bring you so down that you thought you lost your mind? luvluv this is the first song off dookie that i loved. it's not my favourite off that album anymore, but it's still an amazing song. Yeah, this
