Ingrid Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 I really really hate the thought of Gilman closing - I need to go there sometime!! So I donated, and so should everybody that is able to!
Holly Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 This is awful Surely Green Day could/would want to donate money? But an $31,000 increase in rent per year!! How can the landlord do that? Its extortionate!
Abbey. Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 This is awful Surely Green Day could/would want to donate money? But an $31,000 increase in rent per year!! How can the landlord do that? Its extortionate! From what I understand the landlord has gotten himself into a bit of an unfortunate situation on his mortgage of this property and the club becomes a bit of a victim of the bursting of the housing bubble. It seems to me that the landlord is using the club to help get himself out of his loan mess which I think is wrong. If the club cant meet rent then it would seem to me that the property would have to potentially get foreclosed on which is no good for anyone. I dont understand why the club didnt buy this building years ago. Perhaps we get some good fundraising shows out of this whole debacle?! Imagine the bands they could dig up and put back together to raise some $? How amazing would that be!
musse Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 This is awful Surely Green Day could/would want to donate money? That's what I thought too! At least they should donate. And yeah I'll try to donate some too, even tho I don't have so much money atm. Their site says that if I donate 25$, which is not much, I'll get a t-shirt! That'd be pretty cool too... I've never been there but visiting Gilman is one of the things I just have to do before I die. So if they close I'll be quite unhappy.
Vaso.Of.Suburbia Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 this may sound stupid, but I think the bands which came from gilman's should do something for this place, i mean, come on, their career started there! they cant leave this place! and i dont say it just for green day... there are also many important bands which started there, for example AFI, the offspring, rancid, bad religion and many many many more and they can help... i would help if i was in the USA, if i had a credit card and enough money...
Vrock09 Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Im donating, but I suggest GDC buy it or AFI and Green Day should buy it and make something, I don't know what, but it'll be amazing!

I was about to post this... I was actually thinking how could they not donate or at least mention it to their fans or something! Savannah and I wanted to go to Gilman too...

Abbey. Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 anyone interested in supporting Gilman Street AND reading a great book about the east bay punk scene can now do both. Several bookstores in the bay area are donating a percentage of profits for this book to Gilman. Gimme Something Better supoprts 924 Gilman Street
NickD Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 This is awful Surely Green Day could/would want to donate money? they're not allowed to, as gilman is a non-profit-volunteer-run club. the reason billie joe bought the sound system was because he insisted on giving to the club. green day's tried giving money many many times, but have been denied. after each attempt by the band, gilman's received "anonymous donations" of huge amounts of money, from what i've read/heard
iLozza! Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 I haven't any money to donate. But if I did, then I definitely would. it's a cause worth helping. Places like that don't deserve to shut down.
SOMERTEN Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 I can't forget the way people at Gilman treated Green Day years ago. They continuously try to play down their link with Green Day, at the same time using the band they once called sellouts for every scrap of publicity. I feel it's time the people that were involved in the early alienation of the band came out and apologized, said how wrong they were and that they are happy to use the band constantly to raise money before GD fans give them a penny. I can't believe they get more publicity from Green Day websites. I wonder if 'Billie Joe must die' is still written on the wall?
theclassof13 Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 gilman closing would be a huge loss!!!!!!! I hope green day helps out.
RebelofSuburbia Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 aw, that's sad. I still need to visit this place =( Benefit shows sound like an awesome idea, I'm sure PHGP or the Foxies would be up for that!
Kitten Posted May 2, 2010 Posted May 2, 2010 aw, that's sad. I still need to visit this place =( Benefit shows sound like an awesome idea, I'm sure PHGP or the Foxies would be up for that! Considering that they have been there since 1986, and the increase is 31,000 in addition to what they are already paying, wouldn't it be possible for them as a non-profit to get a loan and buy the club from the owner? I seriously doubt that the mortgage would be 7000 a month, and that means that they are not at the mercy of someone else to continue having the club where it should be, 924 Gilman Street. Plus I really want to see it in action when I visit California next year. Plus, the owner is shooting himself in the foot. If he increases the rent so much that the club shuts down, the property value is going to plummet.
Abbey. Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 i really hope this doesn't get moved because this is IMPORTANT, i am pretty sure all of you if not most of you are aware of what 924 gilman st is, it was the diy punk space that green day started playing at and that many other band i love played at, like filth, neurosis, crimpshrine, jawbreaker etc anyway i have been trying to be "active" and positive in this "scene" and i am organizing a 924 gilman st benefit show day, it will be on the same day sometime in june and will happen in philly, baltimore, new brunswick nj, and nyc, i have emailed MANY artists about this and i have been talking to some really awesome diy spaces. IF ANYONE OF YOU WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS in a serious way then message me, all the money made at these shows will be sent to gilman st, maybe the artists will get some. i have put together shows before but i have a feeling that this just might be the biggest event i have ever set up. its going to take time and effort but in the end it will be fun! i would really like if this topic can be pinned because it would be a damn shame to see gilman st shut down because of a rent problem, its just as important as ABC NO RIO and rip cbgbs, when venues like this close down it sucks, we need to have spaces like this, all ages spaces that have a positive attitude towards shows and the scene! i will post again soon with the full line up, venues and dates mike - i put this in the thread that was already running on 924 gilman street. keep us all posted on your benefit show. abbey
iwannabetheminority:) Posted May 12, 2010 Posted May 12, 2010 I donated £4 (about 5 dollars), it's all I have at the moment, I hope it makes a difference.
MikeCm Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 abc no rio needs help too everyone! they are both connected!
Sarahnade. Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 I really hope this place stays alive, I want to go there someday and it just has so much history. Not just of Green Day, but countless of other punk bands and kids that go there to see shows. It would just suck for it to get shut down. Donations are good and benefit shows would be awesome.
Hermione Posted May 13, 2010 Posted May 13, 2010 they're not allowed to, as gilman is a non-profit-volunteer-run club. the reason billie joe bought the sound system was because he insisted on giving to the club. green day's tried giving money many many times, but have been denied. after each attempt by the band, gilman's received "anonymous donations" of huge amounts of money, from what i've read/heard So they refuse money from a band who's grown up with, played at and been hugely influenced by the club? But they'll accept and even ask for money from that band's fans, who have never even been to the club? Won't take money from a loyal local band, but will from non-local fans of the band? If that's true then I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. I hope they find a way to raise enough money to keep it open, I really do. But there's about a million worthy causes in the world I'd donate my money to (if I had any) before I'd donate to a club on another continent that I've never been to.
